No, seriously. If its an intro class, the instructor will probably tell you not to use libraries and code assignments from the ground up.

To get an understanding of how Java is actually used, I'd highly recommend creating two versions of assignments when time allows: #1 will be the vanilla code your prof asks for. #2 will be the code using libraries, because everyone uses libraries. Java.io, Java.net, Java.math, etc will be like a second language if you become a developer so start getting familiar now.

The statement that you need CCNA coupled with some experience. If you know all of the fundamentals of networking but haven't touched or done any Cisco router coding then you are toast. It isn't hard to get your hands on some virtual software or some cheap 2600 or 1841 routers to play with on ebay or craigslist.
 
CCNA is good because your resume will get picked up in keyword searches. 

So many companies making network hardware at this point though. If you want to make a minimal investment grab the Network+.
 
What are people's thoughts on the career outlook for a web developer or in IT?

I'm a web developer, but wouldn't mind switching to IT

If you don't mind sitting in meetings all day look into being a product manager or business analyst. Basically act as a liaison between the IT and business folks.

That really is what I want to do. How much experience do you need as a developer to move into a business analyst role? Any particular skills (apart from the obvious social, communication skills etc) that are required?

I'm a junior web developer, and would like to move into a business kind of role as soon as possible.
 
Would some of you guys mind putting up like a sample resume with all your identifiable info out of course. Trying to get a good eye on how I should format mine.
 
Just had my first Programming class. Gonna be a tough class especially since i'm in basketball and time isn't on my side.

You need to be detail oriented and be able to write requirements.

equality equality I can't speak for other firms but bulge bracket banks also look for candidates with SQL knowledge.

I've been a IT contractor for the past ~2.5 years. Did L1/L2 trade support for about 9 months and transitioned into a BA role. Finally getting converted to a bank employee. "First day" on Monday. :pimp:

I work as a BA in the Software Dev area and was never a programmer I will say learning a language helps more so that you will understand the logic of what you are developing, so the stuff I learned in college helps me be able to read code (once you learn one language its pretty easy to understand most others) and be able to translate stuff to laymen's terms for clients
 
I'm a Market Research Analyst and would like to transition into a Business Analyst. I pretty much have all the background skills as far as communication skills, analytical, etc except technical skills. Probably looking for entry level opportunities as a Business Analyst
 
YO, IT fam need help with some conversions.

Hexadecimal E9 converted into decimal form.

I need to show my work so putting it into a calculator doesn't help. :frown:
 
Just convert the hexadecimal into binary. Then treat it as eight bits and convert.

Example:

77 Hex = 0111 + 0111

128. 64. 32. 16. 8. 4. 2. 1.
0. 1. 1. 1. 0. 1. 1. 1. = 119

If it looks a little funky, it's because I typed it on my iPad. There's also a funky multiplication way to do it but I can't remember right now.

can anyone recommend some books for me to read? pertaining to IT, computer science, software development, etc?

with my dreams of becoming a physical therapist assistant failed (I didn't get accepted into the program), I'm gonna get my Associates in Computer Information Systems, then transfer to a Univ somewhere in Jersey.
 
Before you buy any books, try to narrow down what you are interested in. There are a lot of blogs and youtube videos who gives you some white board and screen demo on each of the discussed technology. Once you find something interesting, then go to amazon and see what books get good rating and priced reasonably.

School I want to transfer to doesnt have computer information technology as a major. :smh:

Would have to switch to computer science or MIS. Not sure if I can handle all that math.
