Does anyone else ever be at work like "Yo, this can't be life"?

I'm an engineer, and I question the purpose of my employer on a daily basis, not to mention I feel quite unappreciated for all that I do. I just treat it as a stepping stone towards my other goals. Short-term, I'd like to get a more meaningful job in my career, but ultimately, it's a stepping stone for becoming financially independent. I save as much cash as possible with every paycheck I receive, and make wise investments. Never be content, always continue growing and looking for better opportunities.

Reading through the posts I can relate to the feeling so many of y'all have mentioned. I was a supervisor for many years at a pizza restaurant. Similar to a Shakeys's if you will...spent about 10 years there. Worked there since my senior year of high school. And after a while I realized how dead end it was. I was making almost $14 an hour but others that previously had my position had received more. End of last year I left and couldn't be happier. Now I have a better job that pays slightly less but I don't have to deal with rude customers or people pulling bs to try to get free stuff. And I'm currently on vacation in Hawaii with the wife. When I get back I have interviews with Starbucks and Amazon lined up. Things will improve if you dedicate the time and make others recognize your true worth. I was a great student in school and graduated junior college with a 3.5 gpa. It took longer than expected but my life has taken me closer to where I expect it. Believe in your capabilities and amazing things can happen. Don't be discouraged, because I received a lot of responses to my applications that were no before I got all these interviews. Just stay positive and keep grinding.

i think this thread also speaks to an overlooked inherent problem with the higher education system. not only do colleges peddle degrees that offer little or no return on investment, aka a job that offers growth and sustainable/comfortable salary, we don't encourage students to study in fields that cater to their interests that also offers a sustainable future.

i think in the end, this social question is ambiguous...there isn't a one reason fits all.
+1 to this man.

It's unfortunate that salaries and opportunities don't follow higher level education these days in MOST fields. Even google has been following the trend of hiring people without degrees. It seems that people without an education which comprises of foreign labor are willing to work longer for less pay and are okay getting treated like dirt. That has been my observation. People with "worthless" degrees are stuck in a occupational purgatory and are forced to work jobs unrelated to their studies unless they go get a masters or P.Hd furthering their student loan debt. The system is broken my dawgs.....

Worked at a plastic factory When I was 18/19... 6pm-6am 4 days a week... Did it for like 6 months... Was doing coke to help stay awake and not go nuts, I mean, I got it for free, but still lol... You worked in isolation and wasn't allowed to have a radio... Miserable and no life...

One morning at 3am,i said **** it... Left, hit up McDonald's for a milkshake... Drove him, and clipped a deer with my Saab 9000...

One time when I was really looking for work I gotta job at a plastic factory, worked for three days and never went back  worst job I ever had. Was taking steaming hot baskets out this machine for like six straight hours at a time with thin *** gloves that did nothing for me. Then had to put handles on them that would give you terrible blisters and then I'd have to go to the boxing station and force their way into these boxes that they barely fit into. Basically in complete isolation as well.

This thread had me so gassed, I quit my job today lol

You guys are my heros!

Im 23 been at my job since 10th grade bout 7 years now i was 16 at the time (worked part time after school). I graduated in 09, after the summer of 09 i became a full time worker working 830-5. I love my job but this work life in general im not about anymore. I just want to wake up and be able to do stuff on my own time (got a long ways to go for that) unless i hit the jackpot on something.

its just horrible how majority of us work more than we get free time. Me working 830-5 is 8.5 hours some times 8 when i take lunch and other breaks. By the time i get home its 6 or 630 depending on the train. I cant even really enjoy summer time besides for when i take vacation time or the weekends.

In the winter i leave for work when its dark and come home when its dark starting to get tired of working honestly.

Yes.

And this dusty *** dude who was clearly blitzed off some white or something tried to cop my shoes today.

I don't know why it made me so mad  like the **** am I gonna wear for the next 3 hours?

Yeah, it's for the fam.  The young one is approaching pre-school age, so mission accomplished with me staying at home with her prior to being school age.  Time to get back to the daily grind.  **** hurts my soul just typing that.

My last job went like this:

8a-9a:  clock in, grab coffee, eat breakfast at my desk and chat it up with the homie across the hall
9a-11a:  do some real work, but nothing too heavy b/c lunch was at 11a
11a-12p:  lunch = nap in my office or car
12p-1p:  loitering, making music playlists, checking emails from friends, and getting back into the work groove after lunch
1p-4p:  this was my real work time--got a lot done in those 3 hours
4p-4:30p:  wrap up the real work
4:30p-5p:  staring out my office window mixed with trying to look busy, checking my timecard, planning my next call in day

Doesn't sound bad when I look at it now, but god it sucked so much.  It was such a mindless, unfulfilling 4 hours of work every day.

Retail is like an America Rite of passage I guess it humbles you and allows you to appreciate when thing a get better. That being said if you aren't in school you shouldn't be doing retail, at least pick up a trade.

Very real

This thread had me so gassed, I quit my job today lol

I feel you. Retail will break you down. It's easy but that **** is hell. You have a manager always in your face and their boss is always in their face.

I remember on e at Levi they tried to hand me a binder with execs faces to memorize in case they come in. ****** paid me less than $8/hr I think. I'm not memorizing these peoples faces for that.

I liked retail cuz I like being around people and helpin out but all that other **** I wasn't with. Could have adult been a manager but I didn't want the stress other managers seem to always have.

I love working in the airport cuz everyday is pretty much the same but still different at the same time. Plus flight benefits. :pimp:

I don't have dreams of a big house and all that right now. I just want to enjoy myself & my free time. My time is way more important than money. I won't make major money unless I switch to mainline but that fine by me and if I do make the switch I'll be going to even better destinations so it's a win win.

Best part as of right now my boss has no clue who I am and I work my plane alone. Boss walked by me and didn't even look at me but I don't care. Second time I've seen him since I've had this job for a little over a month.

All day everyday man...
On the other hand my sister just got laid off (I don't work for a cooperation, so I don't think it's possible to get anything but fired), so I shouldn't be complaining.

My job isn't that bad, especially this new gig, but some days I wish it was like Workaholics.

I drive the city bus...

I dont like it much, in the hood people look at you as if you made it when you got on your uniform and heading to work.

But dealing with traffic all day, miserable customers, idiots walking in the street, I feel I should be making more for all I tolerate.

But I do it. For now.. Hopefully I can move over to any other position. This is the worst in the city.

time out...u pushing that MTA bus? yo i heard you dudes make dumb bread, word to that union.
yeah man i just took a test for BART
thats our subway system out here in the bay area
waiting to hear my placement
the pay will be better than the job i start next week
and double than what i have right now

I am 27 and have been working for a gov contractor for 6 years now. Ever since I moved into the business area out of manufacturing/hands on work I have hated it. Sit in a cube all day long and feel like I'm wasting my life away. I make good money, good benefits, paid for me to finish school, will pay for grad school, but every day I ask myself.... Is it worth it? If it werent for living on my own and having to put a roof over my head I would have quit a long time ago. I have a degree but I'm not looking for another "rat race" job. Hopefully one day I'll figure something out so I can stop thinking "Yo, this cant be life."

im in the situation you left, i want the raise and the chilling at my desk all day. But man, that life looks boring as hell when i walk around to talk to my homeboys and homegirls at work.

i love working with my hands and being hands on with the product i produce so i can feel like my job means something. i make good money, but of course i want more.

my job is so chill, i say all the time im stealing money. M-F 6am-2:30.

Yea man. I thought it would be great... little did I know. I may try to make a move into Supply Chain so I can be hands on but in a professional position at the same time. All I know is that unless youre content being bored as hell and sitting around a lot, cube life is not for you. Of course, money talks....but dont let that reel you in without a fight, especially if you arent hurting for it.

Working a job with the knowledge that you're about to start a new one is the best feeling ever.

Nothing fazes you when you've straight up run out of ***** to give.

I don't hate my job, nor do I love my job. I appreciate my job for what it is (necessary for the time being). Better things will come so long as I continue to invest in myself.

Still doing probation?

Any fellow food and beverage workers feel the same way? I am actually a former one but I am curious to hear the responses from people in the industry lol

How much of it is the job vs the people you work with? All of the jobs where I had the most fun were the ones with cool people

i enjoy working, but being stuck in a job you are not suited for (but good at) can really wear on you. after working in an isolating environment and project for the last few years, i REALLY miss working with client/constituents directly.

i saw an opening at the company my current division used to be a part of too. like 2/3 of my office worked used to work there but iono if anyone would be willing to put me on if they knew someone
