Why isn't there any overtime in soccer World Cup elimination games?

Stop comparing soccer to other sports which have timeouts, different substitution patterns and stoppages in play.  This system has worked and will continue to work even though every 4 years someone can't accept it.

P.S. In LA, the sky is indeed orange sometimes.

I can agree to disagree I guess. I don't mind that format if its not an elimination game.

Besides sudden death overtime, next goal wins would be fun to watch.

I would hate to see the championship game decided by penalty kicks rather then it be won or lost on the field.

Some things are just part of the game I guess

Its hard to compare to other sports, because of the rest periods of those sports have through timeouts and unlimited subs.

Imagine hockey with subs rules like soccer

But its hard to feel bad for Chile anyways, when they strategically were playing for PKs towards the end

I feel you. The substitution rules make it more difficult to happen.

I don't feel bad for chile. They played not to lose late and it cost them.

I guess I'm not that big a fan of two teams in an elimination game giving it their all, trying their best and leaving it all out there and playing to a tie game and have outcome of it being decided that way where only the goalie and each individual shooter have a say in the final outcome.

A response I would expect from you.
I don't know what you mean by that but I don't take troll *** responses seriously sorry.

Posts like these are why people hate America.

I hate Soccer but like ole dude said FOH

Why so sensitive for. If someone "hates" a country off a harmless differing opinion that says more about them.

I've had a few people on here totally dismiss my opinion as if it means nothing but didn't explain anything and that's corny.

A few members on here explained how the game worked and substitution methods and I appreciate that.

Some of you are way too dismissive to anything that's different though.

If you are too ignorant about a topic to know the rules then you are too ignorant to have an opinion on the subject.

I'm not going to give my two cents on cricket rules because I don't know enough about the sport to have an opinion that matters.

So you shouldn't have an opinion on something if you don't know everything about it?

I learned the rules now. I'm still not a fan of an elimination game in any sport ending that way. Plain and simple.

Rules change, look at all the rules that have changed over the years in sports.

Was talking to ice city not you with that post. But which of my posts did you consider a troll post.

I'm not trolling. People can agree to disagree. I don't care.

I feel the way I feel about a game with that magnitude ending that way. I'm not forcing anyone to agree with what I'm saying.

When people totally dismiss another opinion. That's what I consider corny though.

Ced I usually enjoy your posts but it seems kind of insulting to up and say what the sport should fix without knowing anything about it.

Also the game is decided on the field you just don't like it that's all

Never said they should fix it or that they have to.

Its just not my type of way for a win or go home game to be decided.

I guess. Perhaps they should fix the substitution patterns then.

:rolleyes

You still aight tho you're just in your feels right now because of how the game ended

Welp I dun goofed

To be honest with you. I had no rooting interest in either team, I was just shocked how the game ended.

I'm not trying to change other people's opinions but rules do change and different type of rules apply for playoffs as opposed to regular season.

The NFL realized their overtime system was flawed and a coin toss could decide a game so they modified it.

The NHL is ok with games going to a shootout in the regular season but in overtime its no shootout, next team to score a goal wins.

I get the substition patterns but it would be cool to see them be more lenient on them in elimination games. Overtime soccer, next goal wins the World Cup would be great to watch as a fan.

Again to each their own though.

I like PKs, but I think they should move the ball back a bit so the goalie has a slightly better shot to block the kick. I think just a 10% improvement would make it even more exciting.

They would never do this though.

I think penalty kicks to end a soccer game are a joke.  It would be like having a homerun derby at the end of 9 innings if the game is tied.  Or like having a 3 point shootout after regulation in a basketball game.

Ties should be broken in the same manner in which they we created......by playing the actual game of soccer.

And before someone says hockey does the same thing....they dont.  Important hockey games aren't decided by shootouts.  In soccer, the important games are.

Changing the substitution rules to allow for more/longer overtime periods would be more blasphemous than removing PK's.

Because an NFL game has a 5 kick, field goal kicking contest at the end of regulation.

Keep reaching man.

^it's funny but rugby actually does.

Like football you can have a tie - and it doesn't matter. But in their WC it's elimination after the group stages so they have ET then sudden death and then some sort of goal kicking competition. I've never seen it though. With a higher scoring game it's less commonly used.

Are NFL games decided on field goals?

Yup

Are field goals a standard football play?

Nope.
