Is General slowing down?

There's nothing "official" about these "official" threads.  If there's a game you want to discuss, you're not obligated to post in a "ps4 thread."

Is it the same with TAN?

Because I always see people acting like a worthy discussion from TAN isn't allowed to become it's own thread.
It's actually the opposite. One of the rules of TAN is that anything that has the potential to become it's own thread can't be discussed in TAN

Plenty of games have seen their own separate threads in recent months There are two up on the front page right now, including a "FIFA Soccer 14" thread that's 56 pages deep.

Meth, I love you man, I really do, but you can't honestly say that I'm not speaking at least a little bit of truth. We may not be obligated but still. You know what I mean and what I'm getting at.

TAN stops people from creating quality threads, forces people into race arguments, and trolling...

Yall crazy with the "summer is always slow" talk. Summer is when NT was crackin. Cats outside doing stuf and bring it back to NT. In the winter everybody in the crib chilling. Ain't nothing funny about that. The official NT meme is the ock comic about running home to post something funny/crazy/amazing you saw or happened to you. Now a days ppl just post all that stuff on Twitter, IG, FB.

General does suck but the nba thread in sports section is

Best thread on the site

You said the forum was "slowing down."  That can be quantified.  It's "slow" MoM, but not YoY.

Then what we get into is just an overall "feeling" about the content, and often times that's shaded by nostalgia and has more to do with how long someone's been here and how old they are than with any discernible change in content.  We get this literally every year.  Your first year here was someone else's sign of the NikeTalk apocalypse.

If you look at the data, we're growing.  If you ask certain users, we've been falling off for 15 consecutive years.  Who's telling the truth?  Both, but each speaks to a different perspective and we'd be wise not to confuse the two.

SOME users are getting bored.  That's valid from their perspective, but it doesn't mean the site is somehow objectively "slowing down."  Of course, I think you'd find that to be true just about anywhere.  Facebook users get bored of Facebook.  Reddit users get bored of Reddit.  Some people are just plain bored of life.  We want everyone to have the best possible experience, but I think most people would prefer that we maintain a steady hand than overreact to every complaint with abrupt and unnecessary course corrections.

Is it really a good idea to make some heavy handed rule changes on the basis of a limited preference issue?  What gets lost in all of this is that we're dealing with user generated content.  You guys have the power to remake the General forum every single day.

Yes, TAN exists - for now.  We locked it for awhile and nothing significant changed.  Yes, Twitter exists.  We can claim that these things somehow siphon users from the General forum, but the data don't bear this out.  YoY, there's been more activity in 2014 than 2013, and more in 2013 than 2012.  Is the activity focused on things you personally find new, interesting, and exciting X years in to your NikeTalk experience?  Not necessarily, but I know how you can change that.  And it isn't by taking away things that other users enjoy.

Listen, if you want to get people to enjoy doing something, you're better off attracting them to it voluntarily than forcing them.  We can sit here and say, "you should ban all threads I don't like and force everyone to create and post in threads that I DO like," but how will people react to such edicts?  If something works, people will want to replicate that.  Create a positive experience that others enjoy and you'll see more posts along those lines.

Speaking of growth, that made me wonder, was it due to the lack of the wait period? I'm sure you wouldn't want to go back to that as it would take a hit on ad revenue, and I know where all that money goes so it's understandable. I did like the implementation of the one month rule as it helps filter away from trolls. As for the thread content, I'm not saying to lock them up, as that would be silly. I'm just speaking on how NT General has changed from what it once was. Perhaps my choice of words for the title was poor. We have the power as we are what make the forum, I completely understand that. This was no plea from you at all, as there isn't much you could logically do with your power anyhow. And so, does this mean we have no limit of threads made per day? I may have to take a stab at trying to encourage discussion.

the JFK assassination thread that popped up was interesting and the pope/mafia was cool until the religous bashing started. Cats on here need to learn how to agree to disagree. And add some damb pics with your storyline...

My favorite posters. THOSE THAT ADD PHOTOS. Man, it's the best, especially when describing something or speaking of a product. Showing examples, etc. Helps so much.

The chart I posted earlier pertains to the General forum, and posting frequency has continued to grow in this forum even with that 30 day restriction.  (We started that back in October.)

The dynamics of any website are unlikely to be accounted for through unicausal explanations.  Nothing's that simple.  Was the waiting period a factor?  I don't know.  It was confusing as implemented on Yuku - we know that.  However, the change in platform in and of itself wasn't "all good", either.  People are starting to forget their attempts to hijack and rebrand our old forums.  All of the old links pointing to the old system went to their knockoff site, rather than to NikeTalk.  We took a real hit to our traffic as a result of the transition.  Our 2012 stats bear this out.  Slowly but surely, traffic recovered and we're now far healthier than we were on that decrepit and decaying platform.

We took a BIG hit to improve the quality of the site, and I think it was worth it.

At the moment, there is no topic limit.  It's not a deliberate policy change on our part; it's simply not part of the Huddler platform yet.  You're welcome to start a few threads if you like, though we of course want to make sure that, with limited front page space, everyone is mindful that these are resources to be shared and no one user should attempt to dominate the discussion.  While we can't automatically enforce a topic limit, we do still step in if we feel like someone's treating the site like their own personal blog or concierge.  I don't anticipate that being a problem in your case, but, to answer your question, the underlying point of the old topic limit is still manually enforced should we feel that someone's posting frequency is becoming selfish or detrimental.

I love NT. My fav site on the net. I've been a member for a while now. I still get a lot of info from time to time from general. I agree the wait period needs to come back.

This!!

Summer was always lulz

I remember mods would say thank godness summer is over. Kids are going back to school and "this place can go back to normal."

Any dude talking about NT summers are whack must be new or were in summer school.

NT summer got some of the most memorable moments in NT history.

NT truckers, ustream freaks, Henzo vs. T-Dog, etc. That's just stuff from one summer.
