It’s the rallying cry for opponents of same-sex marriage: “Every child deserves a mom or a dad.” But a major new study finds that kids raised by same-sex couples actually do a bit better “than the general population on measures of general health and family cohesion.”

The study, conducted in Australia by University of Melbourne researchers “surveyed 315 same-sex parents and 500 children.” The children in the study scored about six percent higher than Australian kids in the general population. The advantages held up “when controlling for a number sociodemographic factors such as parent education and household income.” The study was the largest of its kind in the world.

The lead researcher, Dr. Simon Crouch, noted that in same-sex couples parents have to “take on roles that are suited to their skill sets rather than falling into those gender stereotypes.” According to Crouch, this leads to a “more harmonious family unit and therefore feeding on to better health and well being.”

The findings were in line with “existing international research undertaken with smaller sample sizes.”

Family Voice Australia, a group that opposes same-sex marriage, said the study should be discounted because it does not consider “what happens when the child reaches adulthood.”

In the United States, opponents of same-sex marriage routinely claim that children raised by same-sex couple fare worse. The most commonly cited study, conducted by sociologist Mark Regnerus, did not actually study children raised by same-sex couples. Indeed, “most of the subjects in the study grew up in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, long before marriage equality was available or adoption rights were codified in many states”. Instead, Regnerus studied children raised in “failed heterosexual unions” where one parent had a “romantic relationship with someone of the same sex.” It has been condemned by the American Sociological Association. Other frequently cited studies have similar methodological problems.

Welp.

Did they factor in that women can't raise a man and that men can't raise a woman?

And of course household income would play a large role. DINKs often do better than the normal family because they don't have money to spend toward kids, they can't have kids biologically and they are more driven career wise due to the fact that they've been shunned by their families.

the study coded for household income.

and you make a lot of ... let's just call them assumptions and sweeping generalizations in that post there

"women can't raise a man"? "... due to the fact that they've been shunned by their families"?

Cool study, I disagree though.
Nothing like having a mother to nurture you
Nothing like having a father to mold you to a man
When they combine forces it's something special.
Obviously the results aren't going to apply to everyone. Everyone's experience is different.

But you can't disagree that when viewed as a population at large, most kids raised by same sex parents are doing better than kids raised by hetero couples.

Yea, my friend back when we were younger had two male parents, bruh hated his life. They must be asking toddlers or kindergartners or something.

Same-Sex parenting > no parenting at all

I would tread lightly with the results of this study, though. Small sample size and length of the study are limitations,

I was watching some thai rivera. He said "it would suck to have a transexual mom. She would have a mom's temper and a dad's strength. When you act up your ts mom would be like "i don't have to wait for your dad to get home to deal with you. I'll deal with you myself."

Women can't raise a man. How is that a generalization? That's why so many of these men raised by women now have feminine energy because they didn't have proper male influence in their lives to set them straight.

I wonder how they test the happiness of the children. I could imagine it being difficult for two dudes to raise a girl to a woman and the contrary. But two same sex parents Is better than none.

That doesn't make sense. How can you even tell a kid who is being raised by same sex couple by just looking at them? And also what percentage of the population are kids raised by same sex couples?

anecdote: an account that is unreliable. An example of this would be your post.

How was this study conducted?

Are the kids from this study all from adoption agencies?
Or some other method of conception used by gay couples?

Bruh i was watching this comedian on America's got Talent. Bruh said " so your mom dresses like your dad, and your dad dresses like your mom what is that called? TransParents" i was crying in this restaurant and everyone was looking at me sideways

I don't understand your first question?

And I'm not sure what the total number of kids being raised by same sex parents is, but I know in 2010 about 4% (somewhere like 65,000) of all adopted kids in the U.S. were being raised by same sex parents.

That doesn't count kids born through a surrogate and other means though.

What is this based on?

:pimp:

Let them gay folks cook...

I always laugh when people think gay folks will raise gay children...

Like its hereditary or something...

They may be more predisposed to accepting their sexuality...

But it ain't like they're in the house talmbout "the opposite sex us icky!"

I don't know about the study but the whole notion women can't raise men and men can't raise women is stupid.

Psychology & science tells us your environment you grow up in raises you and I doubt these same sex couples are raising their kids in bad areas so that plays a large role in their "health and happiness".
