Report: Russell Westbrook will skip Team USA in 2014 World Cup

By Zach Harper | NBA writer
July 7, 2014 8:49 pm ET
Over the last 15 months, Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook has been through a lot physically. He's had three surgeries on the right knee that was injured during the 2013 playoffs when Patrick Beverley crashed into him while going for a steal. Since then, he's worked hard to get back to the court where he helped the Thunder get to the Western Conference finals. After all of that recovery work, he'll need to make sure he gets back into a proper, regular training routine for this summer.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, Westbrook won't be playing for Team USA when they head to Spain for the FIBA World Cup this September. He's reportedly withdrawn from the two-month commitment and will skip the July training camp, the August exhibitions, and the tournament itself.

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook has withdrawn from USA Basketball's roster for the World Cup in Spain this summer, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

After a season that included his third surgery on his right knee, Westbrook decided to pass on the two-month commitment that includes a July training camp, August exhibition tour and September tournament in Spain.

Westbrook helped USA Basketball win gold medals in the FIBA tournament in 2010 in Turkey and the Beijing Olympics in 2012. His withdrawal from playing for the team this summer gives Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers, and Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers a chance to make their mark on Team USA for future tournaments.

2014-16 USA Men's National Team Roster:
Initial 28 man pool:

LaMarcus Aldridge
Carmelo Anthony
Bradley Beal
Tyson Chandler
DeMarcus Cousins
Steph Curry
Anthony Davis
Andre Drummond
Kevin Durant
Kenneth Faried
Paul George
Blake Griffin
James Harden
Gordon Hayward
Dwight Howard
Andre Iguodala
Kyrie Irving
LeBron James
David Lee
Kahwi Leonard
Dame Lillard
Kevin Love
Chris Paul
Derrick Rose
Klay Thompson
Russel Westbrook
Deron Williams

Managing Director: Jerry Colangelo
Head Coach: Mike Krzyzewski, Duke University
Assistant Coach: Jim Boeheim, Syracuse University
Assistant Coach: Tom Thibodeau , Chicago Bulls
Assistant Coach: Monty Williams , New Orleans Pelicans

We're picking 12 out of the 28, not sure which players are in/out yet so it's purely speculation.

Off top, let's eliminate a few obvious choices:

ELIMINATED DUE TO AGE/INJURIES
Tyson Chandler
Kyle Korver
David Lee
Deron Williams

PULLED OUT, OFFICIALLY:
Carmelo Anthony
LeBron James
Chris Paul
Russel Westbrook

FULLY COMMITTED, LOCKED:
LaMarcus Aldridge
Anthony Davis
Kevin Durant
Kevin Love

STARS THAT HAVE EXPRESSED DESIRE TO PLAY:
Blake Griffin
James Harden
Dwight Howard

YOUNG GUNS, VIRTUAL LOCKS:
Paul George
Steph Curry
Kyrie Irving

Right now the team would look like this:
Wings: Curry/Irving/Harden/George/Durant
Bigs: Love/Griffin/Aldridge/Davis/Howard

That leaves 2 spots for 10 players

Bradley Beal - Would love him on the team
DeMarcus Cousins - I like Boogie but he's probably too unstable to bring out there, might put the team in danger from a technical or something.
Andre Drummond - Unless Dwight pulls out, it's hard to see room for another big man. Free Throw shooting is a big concern as well.
Kenneth Faried - Nope not enough room.
Gordon Hayward - Not enough room, esp. with emergence of Leonard
Andre Iguodala - Nope, might as well go with the youth over exp. You had a good run on the 2012 team but your time is up Iggy.
Kahwi Leonard - I would've said no 6 months ago but it's hard to keep him out after that Finals performance.
Dame Lillard - Could see him on the team, an extra ballhandler is always a necessity
Derrick Rose - Personally, I don't think Rose will play due to injury concerns.
Klay Thompson - Has a chance, comes down to him or Beal... who is the better shooter?

So it comes down to these 15. Pick the best 12, it's hard to go wrong.

Curry/Irving/Lillard
Harden/Beal/Thompson
Durant/George/Leonard
Love/Aldridge/Griffin
Howard/Davis/Drummond

MY EARLY BUT FINAL GUESS:
Curry/Irving
Harden/Beal
Durant/George/Leonard
Love/Aldridge/Griffin
Howard/Davis

* last cut came down to Beal/Lillard/Thompson... Lillard is hard to leave out but Beal is the better shooter.

cant wait for this :pimp: Kinda dont want Curry to play tho, dont want him at risk for injury

Didn't know about this. I will watch just to see all those all stars play together but I doubt we'll see a high level competition overall. It'll be just like the olympics where it gets "dramatic" towards the end. Hopefully this tournament will elevate the game of the smaller countries though.

Should be fun. Would like to see some young guns take over :pimp:

No doubt.

Age of potential roster @ start of tournament:
21: Beal, Davis, Drummond
22: Irving
23: Leonard
24: Lillard, Thompson, George
25: Harden, Durant, Love, Griffin
26: Curry
28: Howard
29: Aldridge

Not a single player over 30, Curry is the 3rd oldest dude on the squad :pimp:

Philippines gonna get ran through :/

Rooted for y'all to qualify last year though

Yea I know That just looking for one win out of all the players to naturalize the last two players they came up with were Javale and Blatche if it wasn't for Javales injury he'd be the guy why couldn't they just try and talk to a guy like Taj Gibson man or even just like a Paul Millsap and if they really waned a C they should've tried DMC or just a Larry sanders

The blue doesn't look too bad but I did like the 92 Olympic jerseys.

At least post the real one:

The back was perfect too - the vertical arch was just right.
