OFFICIAL FIBA World Cup Spain 2014 Thread

Marc Stein on twitter:

Early indications are USA Basketball will take roughly 20 players to Vegas for what will be 12-man roster to compete in 2014 FIBA World Cup

Despite pullout of Russell Westbrook, USA Basketball does not necessarily have to add a PG because Derrick Rose is vowing to play in Spain

Woj:

Wizards guard John Wall won't be included on USA Basketball roster Monday, but could be added for camp/World Cup later, source tells Yahoo.

Durant/Leonard
Love/BG/LMA
Howard/Davis

... now I'm thinking about Beal/Thompson over George.

Rose need to stay home

We need point guards who can shoot

Hes gonna be hella rusty and look like he did last year early on

a lot of news this morning...

- Parsons is now included in the pool

- Leonard pulled out

- No Dwight Howard/LaMarcus Aldridge?

Curry/Kyrie/Lillard/Rose
Beal/Harden/Klay/DeRozan
Durant/George/Hayward/Korver/Parsons
ADavis/Faried/Griffin/Love
Boogie/Drummond

Biggest snub: John Wall... don't know how there isn't room for him in the pool
I guess he could be added later tho:

On USAB conference call today, they'll also surely announce likes of John Wall and others can be added between now and July 27 report date

So I guess this changes things up a bit... no more LMA or Dwight in the pool means 1 of Boogie or Drummond will make it in.

Of these 19, I'd remove Korver, Derozan, Hayward, Parsons, Faried

Then you have to eliminate 2 of:

Curry(26)/Kyrie(22)/Lillard(24)/Rose(25)
Harden(25)/Beal(21)/Thompson(24)
Durant(25)/George(24)
Unibrow(21)/Griffin(25)/Love(25)

Boogie(24)/Drummond(21)

(age in parenthesis, looks like Curry is the oldest guy on our squad... insane)
Curry, Kyrie, Harden, Durant, George, Unibrow, Griffin, Love = LOCKED IN BARRING INJURY.

For me it comes down to Beal or Klay & Lillard or Rose.
You can also take 8 pg/sg/sf and choose 1 of Boogie/Drummond

I wonder if Durant will play. I mean he had a deep run in the playoffs and might be tired. I hope John Wall get a chance to come and make the team :smokin

Im pretty sure KD is already committed to playing. He's probably our best player.

should be an interesting tourney

can't wait for friendlies to start cranking up so I can check out Russia and Lithuania

Good summer so far. World cup and now these World championships aka new World cup of basketball. I wish Baseball had a tournament like this instead of the World baseball classic where none of our great players want to play in.

Jerry Colangelo said LaMarcus Aldridge told USA Basketball he's not available for FIBA World Cup. Could be last straw for Aldridge/re: USAB

Here's deal on LaMarcus Aldridge. USAB has had interest. Aldridge's interest has been tepid. Aldridge finally reached out in winter. Now, Aldridge doesn't want to play, which is fine. His call. But don't expect him to get much consideration for 2016 Olympics.

Kawhi, on Team USA withdrawal: 'difficult decision;wants compete against guys from other countries but need time to rest body

Some additional thoughts...

- Drummond over Boogie as the only true Center. Boogie is unreliable right now.
- I think Rose is going to make it. Don't know who he replaces tho, but it has to be one of Lillard/Klay/Beal, probably Lillard b/c carrying 4 points is redundant (even tho Curry will mostly play the 2)

14th cut = Boogie Cousins
13th cut = Dame Lillard

12 MAN ROSTER:

Rose/Kyrie
Curry/Harden/Beal
George/Thompson
Durant/Griffin
Love/Davis/Drummond

12th man = Andre Drummond
11th man = Bradley Beal
10th man = Klay Thompson
9th man = James Harden
8th man = Blake Griffin
7th man = Kyrie Irving
6th man = Anthony Davis

Starting 5

Rose/Curry/George/Durant/Love

Backup 5:

Kyrie/Harden/Thompson/Griffin/Davis

Utility shooter: Bradley Beal
Remaining big: Drummond

Rose hasn't played compitive ball for two years and you expect him to make the roster over Dame and wall :smh:

Rose could've taken 5 years off of basketball and he'd still play better defense than Dame.

For the record, I'd take Wall over Lillard and Rose.

Y'all gotta relax. I said in the 2nd post I didn't think Rose would play due to injury concerns, but dude seems like he's hellbent on playing in Spain.

On the 19-man list is Derrick Rose, who last played in a game on Nov. 22. Rose has fully recovered from his latest knee surgery and is ready to test himself and knock off some of the rust.

“We’d like to see him play like the Derrick of old, because he is one of the best players in the world,” USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski said Monday. “What we’ve heard is that he’s in great shape.”

Rose can look toward Tyson Chandler for inspiration. In 2010, Chandler was coming off an injury-riddled season with the Charlotte Bobcats. He got healthy in the summer and used the 2010 World Championship as a springboard to a great season in Dallas and an NBA title.

“Hopefully,” Krzyzewski said of Rose, “this would be a launching pad for him for a great NBA season.”

Rose is one of four point guards (Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving and Damian Lillard are the others) on the list. Colangelo has typically carried three point guards on his roster and Krzyzewski has often played two of them at the same time.

With Russel Westbrook pulling out, USA needs a defensive point. Curry, Lillard & Irving are all trash defensively.
Rose is the best defensive pg left in the pool.
I'd take Wall over him but apparently Coach K & Colangelo see things differently.

i was gonna say rose isn't much of a defensive pg himself but those other guys really are completely useless on that end
