San Francisco landlord uses loophole to evict 98-year-old who paid rent on time for 50 years

I'm sorry but that lady looks like she died last year.

If you're going to raise the rent you might as well just hand her an eviction notice.

Sad story.
you can't just raise rent by 1000s. If it's rent controlled, you can only raise it like 10%. I believe thats why they're evicting her; to get an instant 3k a month vs whatever under market value she is paying.

Greed is truly a scary thing. Let this damn woman live the rest of her life where she's been for the past 50 years. She comes off as witty and very aware (at her age that is amazing). It's a shame, man. *sigh*

Can they kick her out? She's very aware and very spry!

I hope she holds it down there until she passes and gets one of her family members as a roommate!

I can only hope I reach that age and if I do, reach that age and still be functional like she is

why would they evict that old grandma? they should just let her finish her life in peace.

Trust me........this is happening to other as well. SF is truly getting disgusting. Landlords know they can get some tech kid to pay way more right now. It's not even a hipster vs OG SF head thing. It's just making SF unmanageable to live in. Middle class is becoming lower class and so on. It's just crazy times.

EDIT: Just saw the video. I bet with increases, she is paying somewhere between $400-500. That apartment can go for $3k easily at Dolores area.

Landlord can cash her out 13.5k

But they'll make that back in 4.5 months.

SF is a tough place to live if your money is not there. People are paying mortgages for their 1 bedroom studios, pretty disgusting and crazy.

^^^That is the bum wrap out of it. I know landlords are supposed to cash you out but you can't take that anywhere and find a cheaper place unless you move out of SF and even at that, it won't get that much cheaper. What's crazy is this all happened with the last 2-4 years or so. I was ready to move not to long ago but I have to pay almost almost triple what I pay now for a better size place. Now I am holding my studio as hot commodity since it's on the cheaper side, even though I still think it's not worth the cost.

Cause living is a beautiful thing

Who knows what comes next
whatever that means

ill never forget this...........old co worker of mine

"i see no point in living past the age of 55."
Son you have me contemplating life right now. If i live to be that old I'm becoming one of those old dudes that walks around the gym locker room naked and holds up traffic without giving a damn.

Such a shame.

yeah that's crazy, didn't know it was that bad in SF. America is turning to **** :smh:
Majority of new Yorkers live with rent control too. Havent heard about this happening in NYC.

From a humanitarian standpoint, she should be allowed to stay.
On the other hand, being in business myself, the amount of profit being wasted......

this. mission prices are at an all time high. landlords cant wait to rent to folks (mainly young folks in tech). you got 4 grown adults paying 4k for a 2br apt and sharing rooms and what not just so they can live in the city :x

this whole bubble will burst again

art studio didnt get their lease renewed 5k/month
startup moves in and pays 30k/month
ends up failing
building owner still made a huge profit after a yr

SF is really, really difficult to live in unless you have connections. For example, I'm paying $1000 for my own room in a 2 bedroom in a good neighborhood but it's only cause my friend's family knows the owners. Also cause it's old as @#$% (clean and well maintained though). It's barely cheaper in the South Bay too. There's no escape from paying out your @#$ unless you get a girlfriend/wife to move into your studio/1 bedroom and split rent

This is a wack situation. Feel for the lady.

I wont turn this thread, but this is no different then whats occurring in many 'other' communities.

Gentrification is alive and well in and around the USC area. They're bring in a trader joes in place of a Superior (which caters to latinos and other minorities)

It's a catch 22. As a property owner, I'm happy cause it helps my bottom line, but at the same time, it displaces people who can't afford rent in other places.

Really? There's a gentrification of NY thread once a month.
