I was thinking the same thing. After seeing what some tenants paid in San Francisco due to the rent control laws, I see no reason to buy in the city. Once you're in a place, your rent is pretty much set for the rest of your life. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the most a landlord can increase it in any year is 1-2% and can't evict you unless you're missed a rent payment or broken the law.

What a shame...the only positive thing I can think of in this situation is that she'll have some more company if she lives in a nursing home.

a lot of old people would rather die than go to nursing homes...they value their independence more than anything...

got a bunch of rich folks out here and not enough places to live. even people making 70k cant get their own spot bc it's so expensive and there are limited housing. the cost of living out here is getting even more ridiculous. there is no middle class in sf.
older sf heads who arent gonna leave their spots that have rent control.
the people that own the buildings are looking to cash in
im not familiar with ny, but i hear it is basically gentrified in a lot of places as well

Man, I've talked to way too many people that are in similar living situations. A grown up sharing a room or sleeping in the living room is wack man. One time, I was at this girl's place, we were chilling in her room, then all of a sudden, her roomate comes out of the closet in the room, apparently he was renting out that tiny walk in closet as his room. Terrible. I just went home shortly afterwards.

oh she wants to give the rent control apartment over to someone else? I can see why the landlords would wanna fight that. Its not a grandma dying soon but a young person taking over the apartment literally costing them millions
