apparently, this matters to alot of people

so lets hear it
what are these rules?

can we get some sort of official list of bylaws?

some sort of criteria?

what makes someone a frontrunner?

where did these rules come from?
were they taught?
by your parents? siblings? friends?

i grew up in Illinois
but have lived in Florida, Tenn, and Mississippi
and im a fan of.....nobody

who am i allowed to root for?

growing up i was a Bullets fan
and a Suns fan bc of Barkley.
i later became a Lakers fan in 94 but stopped being a fan of teams altogether in 2000? (whenever Kobe/Shaq got their first championship)

i find the whole thing childish but to each their own i guess

It is childish. Concerning yourself with who another man roots for is foolish.

Only really comes into play when said fan is actively jumping from team to team, and talking **** everywhere he jumps to like that uncharted drake clown

Seems unfair to call it childish because its a part of sports

Every time fellas get together and talk sports it's, "who's your squad" , "what team you rep", or "who taking it this year "

Don't see nothing wrong with that.

There's a difference between chopping it up and taking about each other's squads. It's another to accuse people of being front runners or bandwagon fans because the teams they root for aren't from the same city

which is exactly what you hear

some bs algorithm about how being from place X and being a fan of team Y automatically = frontrunner

grown adults with bills to pay getting upset over this nonsense

Cheer for who you want to and it doesn't have to be the home team.

If your a fan of an individual player just be upfront about it. I get an iverson fan who liked whatever team he was on. Same with dudes who are upfront that their a lebron fan not a heat or cavs fan and were always upfront about it. That's perfectly fine. Let not pretend it wasnt a ton of bulls fans in the 90's who only liked them because of Jordan. Dudes will support their favorite player regardless of where they play and that's perfectly normal.

But the dudes who have a new favorite team every few seasons are corny. I've had dudes hit me up talking about "the lakers suck" "the lakers are garbage" as if I don't realize that already, but when I'm about to ask them what their team has done, I realize they were a suns fan in 07, cavs fan in 09, thunder fan in 2011, and a clipper fan now. That's lame to me. How hard is it to stick with one team and like them both when their good and bad and if you jump from team to team, its lame when you run your mouth about the teams other people like because you convientely only like teams when their good.

Its a free country and you can do that if you want, but most people regardless of the sport won't take your sports opinions seriously.

I've noticed though that the switching teams stuff is more frowned upon by football fans though. I know a dude who was a big Terrell Owens fan. He was an eagles fan in 04-05 and a cowboys fan 06-08. He got crap from both teams fanbases about that one lmao

Just root for your hometown team, its the most rewarding

Dont be a fraudulent and root for some far away contender team

I liked the way Kenny Smith put it.

Now, people care more about the name on the back than the front.

the way NBA offseason is conducted like pickup basketball gives people even less of a reason to be diehard about any particular team.

1. Pick a team and stick with it.

2. It's ok to root for other teams/plays as a fan of the game but you should always have your team that you're loyal to.

3. If you're a bandwaggoner who started rooting for a team bc they're good just admit it. No need to make up some excuse about how your 3rd cousins brother is from there or something.

For the record I'm from the Bay Area. My teams are:

NBA: warriors
NFL: Cowboys (raiders weren't around when I was a kid. Male ninner fans in my fam annoyed me so I jumped on the Cowboys bandwaggon and have been hanging since. Rough ride :smh:)
MLB: Giants
NCAA: UCLA (went there)

And I had a TO friend like the one mentioned above. Would go out and buy the teams gear. He claimed he was a fan of the team. Naw he was a fan of TO in my book.

Im not going to get into rules of fandom and what not.. Just a silly topic.

However, the one point I want to bring up is that there is a HUGE difference between being a casual fan and being a bandwagon/frontrunner type fan. 99% of the posters on S&T do not know the difference.

as silly as it is
look at how many in this very thread were brave enough to explain how serious is it to them

ok
theres a huge difference between the casual fan and a frontrunner
the point is what real adult gives enough of a damn to let it bother them?

ive never in my life even asked someone WHY/HOW they are a fan of whatever team

the thought of me even being concerned enough to ask is hilarious to me

Been rollin with Brady/Patriots since the 8th grade when I had a bet against a ton of classmates that they would beat the rams....as long as that team is owned by the Kraft family I'll be a fan

Was able to see them in person last season and hopefully I can make it to Indy for their game in November

If you asked me 2-4 years ago I would have cared.

Now I just don't give a damb. I have my thoughts and ideas behind the issue but I ain't sharing it with anyone

It always turns into one of those cyclical debates that never ends.

I guess it depends on the person as well.

Sports aren't as important to some people as they are to others.

The casual observer isn't as interested as some of the more hardcore watchers so it isn't as serious to them, while to some the result of a big game can either affect their day in mood in a real positive extreme or a negative extreme.

Regarding the bandwagon stuff. Its been a ton of new LA Kings fans in the so cal area as of lately. Some of the fanbase looks down on them as bandwagon jumpers and that's lame to me. Its the local/home team and if their success generates a bunch of fans for the team and even the sport who once had no interest in it whatsoever that's a good thing in my opinion.

Like I stated earlier though, only thing I can't stand are the dudes who jump from team to team, are the first to run their mouth about how another persons favorite team sucks or I run their mouth when another persons team loses but when you ask them who their team is its either a different team every year or they say they only like players or "its not that serious" but their the ones initiating everything running their mouths trying to rustle jimmies. I just don't take anything they have to say sports wise seriously and make it obvious i have no respect for their opinions sports wise.

Maybe its me but its something fun about running your mouth and talking trash to a friend of yours when your team wins and their team just took a big L and at the same time expecting the same treatment from them when their team beats you. That whole trash talking aspect is fun when you know the other person is an actual fan of the team. Personally I can't take those conversations seriously with the new favorite team every few years type dudes.

My thoughts exactly. I've had these discussions in real life more times than I care to count, they never lead anywhere
