Anyone Start School In Their Late 20's? Vol. Starting Over

You shouldn't feel old fam, there is no age limit on gaining more knowledge and to better yourself.

im about to start school soon too hopefully. not as old as OP but close enough. i feel weird but hey, never too late for school

Never too late. I'm sure you have insecurities. But put yourself in other people's position. If you're a young guy and you see an older student in lecture at college, do you think think negatively about that older student ? Probably not. Most people are too concerned about their own issues and stress while at school.

One of the biggest faults I had in my personality (and I'm sure a lot of people have had to) is that I used to, still kind of do (but I'm trying to break the habit), is to care what other people think. IMO, this is one of the most damaging traits that a human can have because it literally doesn't affect you at all but when you feel this way, it severely limits your options and goals.

23 and in my second year of CC (started over after 4 year absence). I was scared of being the oldest in my classes but turns out I'm usually one I'd the youngest.

Hello fams I'm having the same exact issue ...

I'm married with one 2 year old child , 27 going on 28 ... The wifey brings home the bacon as she is a nurse and I make part time money clocking in 20-30 hours per check on a 15 an hour job so that's what I'm working with we don't pay mortgage bec we stay in the studio in her parents.. I don't know whether to keep working go back to school find another job ... If I do the schooling thing 1 I don't know what to do or major in (job right now is work on with kids & the public ) I dropped out when I was 23 and have a few classes under my belt but have a 2,000 student fee balance so Im kinda just stuck on neutral

If your already working 20-30 a week, it shouldn't be an issue squeezing school in there too IMO.

If you could somehow find a way to pay off that 2k in student loans, you'll be eligible for fafsa and other student loans.

And there are plenty of degrees for people wanting to work with the kids and public.

I'm finally understanding that your major does not equal your career.

I know someone with a BS in Mortuary Science but is a regional manager for Verizon.

You won't be the first and definitely not the last. Suffer now so you and your kid won't have to suffer later in life. Do it

Ill tell you, people will look at you like an 'old dude' you'll get side eyes from younger students, theyll make fun of you behind your back, it's going to happen, joke here, joke there....but honestly...who cares what an 18 year old thinks?

I don't think you know what you be doing when you type stuff like this.

Which is why your so beloved.

But what your saying makes total sense.

Some of y'all will feel silly for worrying about it when you actually start. You're not the only ones life throws detours.

It's never too late bro; and this coming from someone who just turned 27 this past April and completed his first year back at school this past May. I stopped going at 20 and joined the Marines so after getting back I felt the same way about heading back when others already working on their Masters/Doctorates but it's worth it as long as you have the drive. It can be a little strange being in class with 19/20 year olds make you feel like an old man around children but that all changes when you see your first grey haired 50+ senior heading to class with his Jansport. haha. Don't let age discourage you out of anything and don't let that feeling of being left behind get to you neither.

Man I needed this thread. I stopped going full time when I was 20. Have been taking a few classes here and there working toward nursing but the past few years I have just focused on work. Now I am 27 and feel I really need to get my stuff together. About to look at classes today and get enrolled for fall

The thing is I won't be able to get fafsa and financial aid bec my wife makes too much money being an rn .. And if I do both school and work will have to start paying for a baby sitter which will definately add up so I feel like it's one or the other and I can't leave work bec it's work $ comes from work.. School = more money plus paying for a sitter an Losing my job .. But in my head people don't respect you till you have that degree no matter what it is and il always feel like schooling will always be in my head for not getting that degree and being a role model to my kids... Yeah I'm on a lose lose battle that's why I stay on neutral

Finding time and money used to be a factor to me when I decided to go back to school.  Since you will probably start at community college, look at their on-line classes or accelerated programs.  Also, since your wife is an RN, I am guessing she has a 3 (12 hr shift) day work week schedule.   I am sure that you will be able to find something that fits both of your schedules.  The cost of community college is not that much, and you can also get cheap textbooks online.

As far as finances, when I transferred to university, I was surprised to get approved for FAFSA.  I was making decent money working full-time.  There are no excuses to improve yourself.  I had classmates that were single parents working minimum wage that graduated with me.  I tip off my hat to you if you are able to manage this.

Everyone is eligible to fill a fafsa and get financial, some won't qualify for grants based on income. You'd have to do loans, but if you really want it you do what you have to.

Honestly bro, you got to sit down and bottom line yourself , Whats the real reason you want to go back to school ? ...is it for a better job to make more money ? and if so are you guaranteed to make more money with the degree your going to get ? if the answer to that question is no then i would not recommend you go because you don't want to waste time and put your family in a bad financial position with those loans you have to pay back.

If money is the real/main issue i would recommend three options :

1. Go to a trade ,community college or vocational school - You can learn a trade or skill in 1-2 years and you can end up making a good amount of money in your first year out of school. Also you can use that trade or skill to start your own business which is were the real money is. Also tuition is usually a lot cheaper then a 4 year school so you can save up money and pay for the school yourself without loans.

2. Found a higher paying job in the field you are already in - I am not sure how long you have been in the field you are currently in but it would not hurt to find another job that will pay you more , its not like it would hurt you to at least try.

3. Start your own online business -selling products or services online , its not hard at all , you just need a good product or service. Also you can start small by selling on ebay and amazon. You can run the business at home on your days off and after work while you still have your current job . Over time the business might make enough money to the point were you can run it full time . Don't sleep on this advice because tons of people i know including myself makes a decent amount of money online. Some of the people i know actually run a online business full time. So if you have patience and are willing to work, you can make money online.

Stop placing so much into the idea of a college degrees because if it can't guarantee you a decent paying job they are a waste of money and time. When i graduated with my degree i could not even find a decent paying job and so much of my friends were unemployed , **** some of them still can't find at least a 30k a year job. People place too much prestige into degrees and its just foolish. Your kids will respect if you can provide for them and your a good father , they will not care if you have a degree or not.

However ,If you still decide to go to a 4 year i would recommend you get into the medical or engineering field because those fields are were you can get a good salary right out of the gate and they provide better job security , every other field is a waste of time because they all place a very high value on experience ,to the point were even if you have a degree they are less likely to give you a opportunities because they want someone with both years of experience a degree . The medical and tech fields are a little similar but they will give you a chance because they need people badly all across the country in those fields .

Got my bachelor's in 05 but i still want to go to law school. I'm 30 and if I start I'll probably be 32ish my first year. Either do it or don't, the time is gonna pass anyway and you're not getting younger.

THIS.

I took some time off after I got my BA and life happened. Worked a few cool jobs, had a kid, and most importantly figured out what I'd really enjoy doing for the rest of my life (something feasible ). Just turned 30 and I'm starting law school next month, focusing on business and real estate.

Went back to school when I was 29 for the Xray program and have NO REGRETS! You can do it fam.
