Hopefully the Superior Ironman is good, I wasn't it a big fan the current series.
The marvel Now Thor has been a great read. I guess this new Thor series would be as good, hopefully.
 
RFX, any idea if this is just THOR Thor in a female body, or a completely new character? It's not Lady Sif or Jane Foster or anything, right?

Black Captain America should be good... and for anyone complaining... He has been black 2 times before this, one of which, was the Falcon filling in just like this time. Thor has also been portrayed as female and while I don't believe Earth X was canon, none of this is new. Even Iron Man was originally created by Stan Lee as a test to see how despicable a hero could be and still maintain the support of the public... so seeing him as a grey area hero or even a villain isn't much of a stretch :lol:

While I would like to think this is some kind of ideological solidarity from Marvel, I know better and see it for what it is. Disney is trying to make more money through Marvel and expand their sales through different demographics and even more so sensational headlines. Instead of creating more new minority and female characters or incorporating lesser known minority and female characters in leading roles, they change the well known ones because they know it will generate a lot more publicity.

Personally, I would have rather seen them re-instate the Bradley family with Isaiah Bradley as Captain America, while keeping the Falcon around as well. It would have been great to see them bring back Josiah X and the Patriot, effectively having a mainstream comic book with 4 black leads.

It should be a completely different person because the current Thor is just losing Mjolnir and the name for some reason became a moniker for whoever wields the hammer now.

I am actually more interested in Thors new story, who is now unworthy, that carries the God slayer axe Jarnbjorn that he used to own before he had Mjolnir.

Yeah, to some extent I feel like by doing stunts like this they essentially saying non-white heroes and female heroes can only be successful if they take the mantle from a preexisting white male hero. If Disney actually cared about female or Black heroes they would push the hundreds of pre-existing ones into greater prominence or put resources into having Marvel staff create new ones. This just feels like a blatant ploy and publicity stunt. It's almost like they do these kinds of things just to cause a ruckus on the internet for free publicity. I suppose, at least they're showing their willingness to put minority characters in important places in the Marvel Universe.

I don't expect this to last and would much rather see some new characters as permanent minority leads. Stunts like this are common and Comic book companies do cheap, temporary stuff like this all the time to generate interest and bolster sales. By doing something like this they can turn someone else taking up their role into an event and get some higher sales for a few first Issues.





Sidenote: Not feeling Cap's new look with the goggles...... I would have loved to see him keep the bird themed mask because that would be the most American costume ever :lol:

I'll say this much right now which seems to constantly be downplayed. Marvel is doing this to make money. They're specifically doing this cuz they know it'll make money.

For the sake of argument, lets say it's Deadpool and that was in the 90s.

Yes in an ideal world Marvel would create new superheroes of diversity but that doesn't sell in the comic medium amongst the Big 2 (Marvel and DC). Their bread and butter will always be - ALWAYS BE - long established iconic characters and quite frankly even that group is quite limited cuz for the most part the casual person probably could name most of the popular comic heroes including teams if you didn't get specific about who was from where.

Marvel has tried creating new characters and more times than not it doesn't work. Not cuz it isn't well written or promoted. It's cuz overall comic fans of the Big 2 do not want something new even if they say other wise. Sucks that Stan and Jack and those bums at DC didn't create more black and important female characters back in the 60s but to stick to that one point the ones that were created are still around today keeping their same level of relevance or a bit higher.

It's sad to say but had Marvel elevated the Bradley family, the books would struggle. I expect there to be a bit of a drop with Falcon and this female Thor despite the same writers staying on simply cuz there are fans that just won't accept a Cap that isn't Steve and Thor that isn't Thor. Making Falcon be Cap is using lesser known characters for the most part I should say though cuz before the movie most ppl didn't know who Falcon was. A lot of ppl sometimes think if you cancel one book it'll be okay if you start selling this different book cuz those fans will just migrate over there. No, if you cancel X-Men books X-Men fans will simply stop and most likely they'll migrate to another company or support indie comics even more. They just won't start buying Inhuman comics or more Avengers. From a financial perspective it isn't as simple as saying create new characters, create new superheroes. It doesn't work like that.

Then there's the ignorance, racism, sexism, and overall stubbornness instilled in comic fandom. Plenty are online coming through with there same old song and dance with dozens of excuses to closet their true intolerance. So to me Marvel coming through with this approach at least opens the minds of younger readers to get this ugliness out of the medium. This actually helps and if it ever got a huge support Marvel might not change it back. The medium has taken some blows since the 90s so lets not pretend the dominant demographic for comics aren't straight white males, young and old. So a lot of the time they dictate what's successful and they kinda have the first move in determining if something new even gets a chance cuz if those initial sales for the first few issues aren't really good the books will be canceled before they every get to reach other demographics that aren't as in to comics or aren't fans yet. It is ivory hard attacking more diverse groups of ppl to comics today but other advancements are trying to overcome that. All these little things help even if you see it as throwing a minority or female in to a well known "white" role/superhero.


Also another point is that you can't just say Marvel should just create new minority and female characters expecting them at some point to be as popular or even half as popular as the established a list and that's cuz as the comic medium has grown, indie comics and specifically creator owned comics have flourished. You talk to some creators and while for many it was their dream to work for Marvel or DC, the smart ones, the really good ones that have considerable fan followings aren't going to just give away their best to Marvel or DC. They can have classic runs with a hero and his 30+ year old supporting cast and villains but they're not creating brand new superheroes giving it their very best cuz Marvel doesn't negotiate with work for hire. They've established royalty programs and giving creators a percentage for really successful creations but you ask any creator and they'll tell you owning your characters 100% is better than giving it away to a mega corporation.

To be specific, this is a Marvel Comics move. They'd be doing this especially if Disney didn't own them. Marvel Comics Publishing isn't making Disney a whole lot of money in the first place compared to their other assets. I doubt this were orders from Disney. It's just doing well enough that they don't get dissolved in to R&D department and because of bad press it'd get. They obviously make more money off of Marvel Studios and other parts of Marvel Entertainment. This isn't some plan to make money by Disney by targeting minorities and females. Disney already has females well in hand with their princesses and they've already made one a minority. If Disney wanted to target that group with the plan of making money we'd get a much better attempt and there'd be no questioning it.

No, it's permanent.

Marvel / DC tried to create new Superheroes from other Ethnicities before but it never took off. Even new White Superheroes don't really catch on anymore; the Superhero genre is pretty much dead. It was a trend like every other trend- was massively popular and fizzled out. That's why they chose to replace Captain America instead. The last successful Comic Book character was....Hellboy? And he's not even a Superhero.

Just peep Senior Executive Editor and VP of Marvel Tom Brevoort's tumblr ask pg to see the type of questions he's getting from alleged comic fans on the net and if you went back further you'd probably see worse stuff posted from other things Marvel did where they come to rant and vent.

Yikes. Before they ask they should have been hit with what was the last comic book they purchased and when. If it's more than 60 days then no question.
