Staten Island man dies after NYPD cop puts him in chokehold

http://www.silive.com/news/index.ssf/2014/08/chokehold_caused_eric_garners.html

Medical examiner determines cause of death a homicide, by way of choke hold.
I can vividly remember people saying he died because he was fat...

So they were making it up to boost their argument?
From the article:
His weight -- Garner weighed more than 300 pounds -- and pre-existing medical conditions -- acute and chronic bronchial asthma and hypertensive cardiovascular disease -- also contributed to Garner's death, the OCME's report states.
So it played a part but obviously without the chokehold he'd still be here today.

idk how he'd get off light considering he used an illegal hold that lead to a death, but i'm sure they'll find a way

Bit of an overreaction to selling black market cigarettes, n'est-ce pas?

If this is protection and service, I'll take my chances.

it is a severe overreaction but unfortunately once a person resists, even a tiny bit, they have the authority to make that person comply. the authority here was obviously misused and the method was definitely uncalled for.

We do have to remember not all cops have the same mindset. I'd like to think those who would react like this man are in the minority

I'd assume he's referring to times where people have been shot and killed for reaching in their pocket for wallets and such?

But when you look at the situations side by side, would you rather be killed for resisting or be killed because "misinterpret" your actions?

I know neither option is perferred but just think about it...

What?

Show me a video of someone complying and being treated as if theyre resisting?

often times these are the instances where there is no video proof.

although I'm sure there is footage out there if you are skeptical.

Wut.

In a day in age where everything is record and everyone wants to be Internet famous your telling me there's not one video of someone complying and being treated as it their resisting?

I'm certain their are countless video's.

if you think a police officer has never done this, by all means, carry on with your Friday afternoon, b.

#nothingtoseehere

You guys are crazy.

There is no way a police officer in the United States would exercise brutality if the suspect didn't resist.

No way.

I mean why would the cops just beat someone up for no reason at all?

One of the main solutions to reducing issues like this being placing cameras on officers may run into a snag when it comes to financing such an endeavor. According to THIS article the cameras cost quite a bit per cop
McCormack couldn’t give a firm number of how much the cameras will cost but estimated they would be between $500 and $1200 each. He also said there are approximately 5200 police officers, making the total cost of equipping each police officer between $2.6 million and $6.2 million.
For the small country towns considering spending $500 on a camera per cop probably ain't in the budget. There's gotta be either a more affordable camera set up or equally effective option

Not to divert this thread away from the original topic at hand, but I do feel compelled to say this.  As a black man, it is disheartening to hear some folks in here paint police with negative generalizations and such a bad broad brush as if all cops are bad.  I say that because many non-blacks paint all black people with the same bad broad brush as well.

It's not right when it's done to us, so to be fair on the matter I say it's unfair to do the same to police officers as well.  Are there bad cops, of course, there are bad people in every sector or group of individuals.  That doesn't mean we as people walk around thinking negatively about a certain group just because of one bad apple, or even a few bad apples.  Just felt the need to say that.
i cant believe yo compared race to a career choice.

Why is it never any black cops around when **** like this happens?

Has nothing to do with black vs. white. It's about misuse of power and authority.

:smh: Terrible! Cops were basically wrestling eachother.

Then 4 guys trying to detain one suspect... while there's like 10 other people around the scene.

Where's situational awareness? Terrible.
