Working mom arrested for letting her 9 year old play alone at park

Damn smh.

1 day at the park is risky and stupid but if it had to be done.....

Day 2, your pushing it seriously and whatever happens happens, you never know.

Day 3 You deserved to get your child taken away. No questions.

What she expected the lil girl to play at the park everyday unsupervised for the whole summer? ANYTHING could of happened to her.

At 9 id rather leave them at home alone than at a park.smh. I know when I was 9 I was mature enough to spend a few hours alone at home. I could cook and everything myself. I was 5'6 5'7 at 9.

I'm confused by this as well. Like others have mentioned at nine years old I was riding my bike down to the neighbordhood park to meet with kids I went to school with. I made sure I let my parents know where I was going and they told me to be back by a certain time. This was before cellphones.

The main issue I have with this is the duration of the child being there. A couple hours is one thing. A whole work shift? Nah. I'd have to figure out a way to get you to into summer camp or stay with cousins or something.

About the adult: the daughter may have been playing with the adult's kids and they wanted to know who it was or something so I can't fault them for that. Even still, my child wouldn't be speaking to adult strangers asking them that.

People just fronting in here

Summer time we weren't even allowed to be in the house

Take yo lil butt outside, here's $5, don't even think about ringing the bell until the sun go down, AND you better not get in no trouble

THIS minus the $5. Might have gotten a $1 to get some freezies or a snowball. i have no problem with what this mother did. Our legal system is a joke.

I'll be that height soon. Doctor said I need to increase my milk a little. Hopefully I hit it by 30.

I wouldn't leave my child in the backyard unattended for that long.

Leaving her at the park while you're at work just seems outlandishly stupid.

People making excuses for the mom's stupid decision saying she had no other options.
Then you want them to giver her the daughter back. Even though she has nonother option than to continue to leave her 9 year old daughter at a park unsupervised for at least 8 hours.

Thank godfor the lady who called the cops before something horrible happened to that little girl.

Here are other options

1. Call off
2. Bring her with you to work
3. Think of a solution ahead of time
4. Leave her at home (bad enough already but better than the damn park)

Leaving your kid outside alone should never even cross your mind

me and my brother would leave the crib at about 11am during the summer and wouldnt be back till sun down

this is from ages 9/10

worlds different now tho or at least it seems so

i dont think i could let my kids do the same

this kind of **** worries the hell out of me as a dad

you want your kids to have freedom and experience life but it's soo many nut jobs out here these days

^ I could share similar stories but here's the difference, you could return home at anytime

This little girl is out there for a work shift no matter what she wanted to do.

and what exactly was stopping this little girl from calling her mom and coming to the same mcdonalds she had been spending her time at? nothing

everybody in here acting like she had no way to contact her mom and was trapped at this park her mother gave her a cellphone

something i didnt have till high school

and i'd be a mile or two from my house at times on bike rides

while i agree that leaving her there wasnt the best idea im not gonna act like this girl was a prisoner

What's stopping her? What stopped her mom from thinking of a responsible solution to the problem? That's the real question

The "it's not that bad" argument isn't a good one and also still means that it IS bad

How is today a different animal from 15 years ago when crime is DOWN across the board?
Overall crime is down across the nation in comparison to 15 years ago, but for whatever reason there appears to be or feels like there are more crazy people, or pedophiles out there to be specific.  Not sure how many pedophiles there were back in the day but it just seems that way based upon news reports and things on-line that I personally hear about.  As a responsible parent, you simply can't take a chance like that with a 9 year old girl out in a park for 8 hours straight at a time, especially for more than one day.

This is what social media has done. Highlight things that were always a problem and make it look worst. Your kid can't be outside because of kidnappers, rapists, and pedophiles, I guess those people didn't exist 30 years ago when you were outside.

What people aren't understanding is that this wasn't an isolated incident...this was her 3rd day in the park UNATTENDED.

30 years ago, you didn't have the luxury of things like the sex-offender database at your fingertips. While things obviously happened, not as many people were most likely cognizant of the dangers that were out there.

I think most of us who do have kids trust our children...however, it's the trust in complete strangers that you don't have. Being cognizant of all the threats out there is a great thing, but it's also a real eye-opener.

For the 10th time, while I don't feel the arrest was warranted, it was beyond negligent of the mother to do this.

Social media + Internet + instant news.

Crime may be down but we here about crime now from every nook and cranny all over the US.
This is true, just last night here in DC on my local news there was a report on sex trafficking in this area.  One of the girls that did an interview on camera said she was kidnapped by her pimp at the age of 10, and was a prostitute up until the age of 17.  She said her customers would pay more for underage girls, truly disgusting.

Of course you want your kids to be a kid and enjoy the freedoms of life.  However, leaving your child, young daughter at a community park for 8 hours at a time UNATTENDED is simple not a wise idea.  Whether the child has a cell phone or not, too many things can go wrong in a situation like that, and apparently it did go wrong for this one parent in particular.

99/100 I would bet the girl would be fine, BUT when that's YOUR baby girl out there should that be good enough?

On top of that, predators look for patterns. If they see the same girl out there everyday that's a huge target. Maybe I'm overthinking it but these are things to think about.

being a parent i think i see both sides i think this day in age and the craziness in the world would make more hesitant to leave my 9 year old in the park alone all day. But then again at 9 i was out much more and more places but slowly times are changing. I would be out with my friends all day the park and different parts of town but i knew to go home when the sun starting going down. its a tough situation the mom was trying to work to provide for the kid and let her go to the park. To be charged and have the child taken is far more tramatuzing for the kid. Smh

My mom had the common sense to leave me in the house with food and water and told me not to answer the phone or go to the door if anyone rings or knocks.

At the same time it was funny cuz my dad let me take the train and bus by myself.

I'm from NYC so I guess things are different.

I think that the mom should've just left the child inside considering the location she lived in.

I don't agree with the mothers decision to have her daughter at the park during her work shift, but the mother might have thought it wasn't a wise decision to leave her daughter at home since their home was broken into earlier.  Which is why the daughters laptop was taken.  That might have been apart of the mothers thought process in regards to not have her child stay at home.

"Sadly, the Harrell home was robbed and the laptop stolen, so the girl asked her mother if she could be dropped off at the park to play instead."

At 9 I was already operating a construction crane.. but I see this from both sides.. its wrong.. but in some strange way I feel bad for the mom.
