Working mom arrested for letting her 9 year old play alone at park

dawg ive seen 9 year olds damn near fully responsible for their 5 year old siblings.
I'm sayin though
At 9 I knew how to clean up the house
Cook oatmeal, eggs, basically a whole breakfast
**** at 9 I used to walk around with an incent to light my own fire crackers and bottle rockets
At 9 I was taking public transit :smh:
Damn man I love my mom
She taught me so much ****
I'm 28 now
And it's so many things that she has taught me
That I don't even realize and take for granted.

I think there is just a difference in how we treat boys and girls. All of us saying "I use to ...... when i was nine", but we are males and we receive certain privileges that our female counter parts do not. Females are treated with more protection than males in most societies, I think if she would have left her 9 y/o son at the park alone it wouldn't have been an issue.

You guys really think that?  Or you think it would just be typical NT fashion to turn this into a race thread?  Because I think with all the stupid "leaving kids in the car, and allowing anyone to break them out" stories that have come up recently, this is just another similar type situation of people not minding their own business.....rather than it being race related.

Come on the first line says "a 46 year old black woman"

I would never leave my 9 yr old DAUGHTER alone anywhere unsupervised, maybe a son. I legit see lil girls no older than 6 walking around the neighborhood alone and I just smh

I used to walk home from school to my Gma crib when I was in 1st grade but I was with my friends and fam, only thing I feared was a loose pit or rott.

i think decisions like this are made to avoid future legal problems

i think this train of thought has screwed up a lot of things

#NTextremes

I'll play, a VP of a Fortune 500 would be able to afford child care and wouldn't leave their kid unattended in a park for hours.

I'm all for productive conversation but broad / general statements like that don't do anything.
I wonder if she was a VP of a fortune 500 company Middle class white lady... Would she have gotten arrested...

We pick on poor people and minorities way too much. Smh.

When I was 9 I was going to the park alone, but 1998 is different from 2014.

I keep reading "when I was 9" could do blank.

Dukes left me and my 2 brothers alone while she worked but we lived a neighborhood where everyone looked out.

Soooo many unknown variables to this story to make assumptions.

Depending on them, this could be way overblown or an extremely dangerous situation for the child.

I honestly do not think crime is different. Statistics show that crime has been on the decline in all major cities in the past 20 years. It's just that we have so many more media outlets that child abductions are the first thing to report so we perceive these times to be worse than previous.

9 isn't too young to be at the park, I guess they want you to wait til you outgrow the park to go the park. :smh:

yeah the fact it was a girl was bad i guess...a boy left alone at the park is balling & having fun

but a poor helpless girl is a cry for help

A 9 year old boy and a 9 year girl aren't any different to me, hell if anything a little boy is more liable to do some dumb ish

Ehhh, I mean was this what she did everytime? It's just really not a good idea at all. Maybe I missed it but why didn't she just leave the kid at home?

It's a different day & age now. ANYTHING can happen when you're either not there or paying attention. There are so many sick people out there, why take chances? I'm kinda torn on the topic. As a parent, I'd never let my kid at 9 play without being in my eyesight. Maybe it's me being overprotective, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Nowadays I wouldn't let my kids play alone at the parkWith all they crazy people around
But honestly 9 years old a person usually in 4th grade and that's ok IMO to be able to play at the park
**** I remember being young I could go outside I just couldn't go past a certain light post and fire hydrant
U gotta give kids a lil freedom to start doing things playing in the park is ok IMO depending on area and age
Haven't read article yet though

I hear what you guys are saying, but the difference between you and the mom in this instance is the fact that she didn't have a choice. Nobody would willingly want to send their 9yr old to the park, or anywhere for that matter by themselves. So it is easy to say "I would never............" I'm sure she didn't want to send her daughter to the park, but unfortunately for her she didn't have much of choice.

It is a tough pill to swallow because their are so many variables involved. I just feel like the cops jumped the gun by arresting the mom. Every situation is different, and should be treated as such. Even if CPS or whatever it they are called in her State got involved, a thorough investigation should reveal no bad intent on the mom's part. They are quick to disrupt a decent home, but let the most vile "parents" retain custody of kids.

No it wasn't.

Wasn't a reference to crime, but what is considered to be good parenting. Nowadays if you leave any kind under 13 alone you're a bad parent, its even a crime in some states to my knowledge.

Walking down the street to the park to play and a child at the park for 8 hrs are two seperated things.

Don't understand how y'all don't see that.

The thought of leaving my daughter alone for 8 hours at the park is unthinkable.

It wasn't what she did everytime. She brought her daughter to work to play on a laptop but apparently the laptop got stolen.

When did it become illegal to play at the park by yourself at 9? If it was nighttime I would understand

.

As it should be.

We always asking where were the parents every time a kid gets into trouble don't we?

Kids need adult supervision period.

Don't assume because you did it makes it ok.
