Giants’ Robert Ayers already talking Super Bowl
By Zach BrazillerJuly 27, 2014 | 11:19pm

Robert Ayers wasn’t thinking about a family reunion when he signed a two-year deal with the Giants. The Jersey City-bred defensive lineman came back home — after spending the first five years of his career in Denver — to get back to the Super Bowl.

“I want to get back to that situation — and I think this year is in Arizona — and that’s all we’re thinking about,” he said before practice on Sunday. “That’s all I think about. I want to win.”

Ayers could serve a vital role for the Giants, as a veteran presence and key depth defensive lineman to help fill the void left by Justin Tuck.

The 28-year-old was a first-round pick (18th overall) in 2009 by the Broncos out of Tennessee, and while he failed to live up to the lofty potential in Denver for such a high draft choice, the sixth-year pro may be just coming into his own.

Ayers is coming off his best season, a 5 ¹/₂-sack, 23-tackle effort for Denver and berth in Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium last February. Gaudy numbers especially because he received just three starts, being used as part of a rotation much the way he will be utilized with the Giants.

“I’m a guy that can help the team in a lot of ways, [play] a lot of different positions,” Ayers said. “You can ask me to do a lot and I can get it done. I can play the run, I can rush the passer. … That’s the thing the Giants take pride in. Mathias [Kiwanuka], [Jason Pierre-Paul], all those guys can play different positions, a lot of guys on defense are real versatile.

The 6-foot-3, 275-pound Ayers played down the significance of coming home as the reason he wound up with the Giants. While being back in the area has its positives — he sees family far more often and he gets to play for the team he followed growing up — Ayers is back in New Jersey because of the Giants’ organization, not where it is located.

“I’m loving it, I’m loving the way they do things. That’s the biggest thing,” he said. “It’s the Giants way. They do things under the radar. They are all about work and business.”

Ayers isn’t worried about stepping back into MetLife Stadium, where he absorbed that beating by the Seahawks last February. The past is just that. He’s a Giant now. In his mind, Ayers was part of that disappointing 7-9 season, not a member of the AFC champion Broncos.

“I’m a Giant and I’m carrying the burden they carried last year,” he said. “We’re going to move forward that way and I have the same motivation they have, to get back to the playoffs and get things back going the way they used to. Get back to the playoffs and try to win it all.”

Ayers grew up in downtrodden Jersey City and graduated from the Sacred Heart School. He played one year for Hoboken High School, reaching the state championship game at the old Meadowlands, but his family sent him to live with his aunt in South Carolina to get away from his troubled neighborhood. He blossomed at Marlboro County High School, found his calling as a dominant defensive lineman and landed a full ride to Tennessee.

Now he’s back home, living out his dream, hoping to get back to the Big Game.

“It’s always good to be this close to family. When you’re tired, you can lean on them a little to help put a smile on your face,” he said. “That’s one thing my family has always done — they know how to make everyone laugh.”

Giants setting very lofty goal for Manning: 70% completions this season. His career average is 58.5%.

Lmao...even alex smith can obtain 65% completion rates Dinkin n dunkin. All I ask for is the pick rate to go down...

U guys r on point, randle is the key..he basically has to be the nicks of 2011 to vic and manningham or beckham have to be the 2011 manningham with robinson being the safety valve.

Of course, eli needs the protection, obviously, or its all a moot point.

Now...no more killdrive so well see how much for the better offensive execution our new OC is......or not.....

I think the offense will be less of a worry than the defense this year. Losing Linval and Tuck will be noticable if JPP, Damontre and Hankins don't play well this year. I'm also not a fan of DRC and think that signing could hurt us. Hope I'm wrong though. Either way, I'm looking forward to a new season. I wish they canceled one of the preseason games since we have the HOF game on Sunday. It really screws season ticker holders who have to pay full price for 2 preseason games each year.

^^I was more excited about beason resigning and almost as excited about bringin in thurmond.

Nothing against DRC....but the only thing I remember was vic and nicks roasting him in his philly days. I mean, hes a good addition....but that contract.....

We srsly need someone on the DLine to deflect attention off JPP so he can shine again..DaMonster...por favor!

Went to training camp today. Was interesting to see the TEs. They have #84 Larry Donnell practicing with the first team. He had a crazy diving catch during scrimmage. He is listed at 6-6 and he could be promising. New offense looks like it will be very nice when and if they master it. Also, Wilson muffed about 5 punts I hope he doesn't see one rep returning during the season.

As far as the DRC signing, we better hope we get the cardinals/broncos DRC rather than Philly DRC.

I wish we would've signed Tuck over Beason if we needed a veteran leader. Even if Demontre Moore turns out to be good/great.

- Larry Donnell is trash. Seen that guy run a route outside of the end zone during a game. Seen him drop mad passes. I would have cut him during the game after running a route outside the end zone.

- Tuck is getting old. Beason helps this team more. I wish we could have kept Tuck. It does piss me off the Giants wouldn't budge. They offered 6 mil and he was willing to go down to 8 mil. I love the guy, Giants should have done what was necessary to keep him.

Our secondary and defense are going to be :pimp: this season, and last year they were ranked 7th in the league (not NFC, in FOOTBALL). That is considering all the bad spots the offense put them in.

Faster, quicker tempo to the offense will also help Eli imo, the delay of games were inexcusable all season. e all know how well Eli does in the two minute drill.

I did not have much hope for him when I heard his injury last year was career-threatening.

Not surprised.

Giants say David Wilson won't practice the rest of the week or play Sunday. Will be examined Monday by the doc who did his spinal surgery.

The thing is, burners are common. So if it's related to his neck issues, then he might have to. If it's just your typical burner, he can play.

Gotta love stra'.

Ive watched the SBXLII DVD over and over.....and his pregame speeches never get old...

Was awesome to watch last night.

Excited to see how the defense looks more than the offense. Still comes down to protecting Eli if we're going to have a successful season.

great speech by 92 last night got me pumped for football

i still dont understand how tuck is not going to finish his career as a giant. they have about 3-4 mil in cap room. they signed ayers, and hillis(hillis won't make the team if wilson makes it) to just below the yearly amount tuck got. Tuck should be on this team i just don't get it

wilson is not done, kiwanuka said he had a few burners during his first season back and has been fine since.

i'm really pumped to see the new offense, gilbrides/coughlin offense was way too predictable. look at Eli when he has been at his best, its been 4th qrt and 2 min drill. why? its because the offense is his offense, the coordinator doesnt script 10 plays ahead with little change from the script, eli calls the plays he thinks will work best with little input from the coordinator. redzone, with out a doubt one of the worst redzone teams past 10 years and why? because when they get to the redzone they slow things down get the plays in from the coordinator and using the same offense so long its predictable. about time we join the rest of the league in having a passing system vs a rushing system. I can't wait to see 4 WR sets with wilson in the backfield. oline and dline are the biggest question marks, funny how those lines years ago were never in question.

Don't get the love fest for Tuck, team needed to get younger in that position. He is one dimensional at this point with stopping the run and a good leader, but he can't get to the QB anymore and isn't the same guy.

I appreciate him as a player, but moving on is necessary.

Eli was sacked a career high last season behind that awful makeshift offensive line, if the Giants new guys can protect Eli the Giants win, simple as that.

Also curious to see who emerges at the TE position.

Taking names for the Eli slander. Nobody was saying **** when my dude was going off on 4,000 passing yards and damn near hit 5,000 a couple years back.
