NY Giants hopeful to recover from injury-plagued 2013 season

Think about the number of players who are either out or trying to come back from injuries as the Giants open training camp on Monday afternoon. The list includes three-fifths of their offensive line and arguably their two most important players on defense.

ROBERT SABO/NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Back surgery results in an ineffective 2013 season for Jason Pierre-Paul, who hopes to return to his old form this year.

Last season felt like it was over for the Giants before it ever really started. They had so much hope, so much belief in their team that a Super Bowl countdown clock hung near their locker room. But the unraveling of their dream really began a month before the clock hit the wall.

It all started to come apart when defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul underwent back surgery in June, ruining his summer and setting the tone for an ineffective season. It continued over the summer when injuries began to hit an offensive line that was decimated by season’s end. Antrel Rolle, Hakeem Nicks, Corey Webster and Stevie Brown were all hurt over the summer. Soon the running backs started to drop at such an alarming rate that two had to be brought in early in the season off the street.

Yes, it’s an excuse that the Giants don’t want to use, but the truth is that injuries were a big reason why the 2013 season went so wrong, so fast.

Unfortunately, on the eve of their 2014 training camp, they’re only marginally better off health-wise than they were at the end of last year.

Think about the number of players who are either out or trying to come back from injuries as the Giants open training camp on Monday afternoon. The list includes three-fifths of their offensive line and arguably their two most important players on defense. In all there are eight key players with injury concerns, and that doesn’t even count Eli Manning and Victor Cruz, who are coming off surgeries but made it through the spring just fine.

Start with the offensive line, since that’s where everything ended early last season. Rebuilding it was the Giants’ “No. 1 priority” in the offseason, according to co-owner John Mara. And they did spend $16.8 million on guard Geoff Schwartz and added solid players in J.D. Walton, their presumed starting center, and tackle Charles Brown.

But remember, Walton hasn’t played a down since September of 2012, missing all of last season with a broken ankle. Now there’s what appears to be the imminent retirement of right guard Chris Snee, who labored through the spring while recovering from elbow surgery and eventually had to be shut down. Even if he opts not to retire — which appears to be a longshot — there’s no telling when his elbow will feel well enough for him to return to the field. And the same goes for left tackle Will Beatty, whose broken leg and injured knee in Week 17 last season were so serious even he can’t say for sure he’ll be ready to go in Week 1.

The prospect of an offensive line in injury-fueled flux is scary enough, but the defense isn’t immune to injury issues, either. The big one on that side of the ball is linebacker Jon Beason, the man most Giants credited for leading the defensive turnaround last season. The Giants spent $16.8 million to re-sign him, but he injured his foot on June 12 and, after he decided against surgery, his expected recovery time leads him right into opening night, if all goes well.

Meanwhile, Pierre-Paul says his back and shoulder injuries are healed, but the truth is he hasn’t really been himself since 2011. He remains an “if” until he shows on the field that he can be the JPP of old. The same goes for Brown, who was the defense’s biggest playmaker when he had eight interceptions in 2012. The next summer he tore his ACL and this summer he’s attempting his comeback.
And then there’s running back David Wilson, whose status after doctors discovered spinal stenosis in his neck last October is so uncertain that GM Jerry Reese has said any contributions from the 2012 first-round pick this season would be considered a “bonus.” On Thursday, Mara said “all signs are that (Wilson’s) going to be ready to go,” but the Giants have long been optimistic and the doctors still haven’t cleared him to resume football activities.

That could happen on Monday, when Wilson is examined again and undergoes another CT scan. But even if he is cleared, he may be weeks or months away from being a factor. And there remains the unknown of how his neck will hold up and how he’ll react to his first hit since last Oct. 6.

That’s a lot of players who’ll be spending a lot of time in the trainer’s room this summer, along with anyone else who might get hurt through the course of regular work. Of course that doesn’t mean the Giants are doomed. Injuries happen to every team and the Giants’ $116 million offseason spending spree has left them much deeper at most positions than they’ve been in years.

But after last year’s disaster, nerves are easily frayed when it comes to the Giants’ health. That’s why of all the reports that come out of training camp this summer, the daily injury report will likely be the most important of all.

Tom Coughlin on Chris Snee: "To me, he was the best guard in all of football. No doubt."

John Mara on Chris Snee: "He was one of the greatest offensive linemen in Giants history, and he’ll be on that Ring of Honor someday."

I was looking at our RB depth chart. Rashad Jennings, David Wilson and the kid from BC all have a lot of potential. They also could all turn out to be busts. None of them are proven. Hope it works out for us.

Checkin in...im semi optomostic about this season. Gotta revive the passing gm and have a productive RB trio...earth/wind/fire type ish.

Love the defensive additions and jerrys draft.

Our secondary is loaded this year. I think the defense success will depend a lot on JPP, personally I think he will have a good year. I said last season it takes about a year to recover from that kind of surgery. The same thing is said every year, if Eli has time, he will make the throws.

I'm very optimistic about the running game.

Jennings is older, but he has less than 500 carries in his entire NFL career. He's got new legs.

Wilson just has to avoid fumbles and getting hit the wrong way, that's a beast 1-2 punch.

Williams has the chance to be explosive too from tape we have seen.

I'm more worried about the offensive line at this point

- ELI READY TO GO
Eli Manning won’t have any limitations in training camp. The two-time Super Bowl MVP had arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle in mid-April, and initially, there was concern that his recovery might linger into camp. But Manning participated in last month’s minicamp, and he said he’s now 100%. “Ankle feels great,” Manning said. “(I) don’t think about it. (It’s) 100%.”

- TROUBLE A-FOOT
LB Jon Beason (foot) will open camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list, as expected . . . WR Mario Manningham (knee) and OG John Jerry (knee) were cleared to practice . . . LT Will Beatty, recovering from a broken leg suffered in last year’s season finale, ran with a normal gait during the conditioning test and will be ready for camp... Giants signed G John Sullen to the practice squad... They waived WR Kris Adams after a failed physical.

O line is definitely the biggest question mark. If the line is bad, the run game doesn't really stand a chance.

Our defense is what will keep us in it but I expect our O line to be bad.

Can't wait for the season to get here. If we can sure up the o-line I like our chances.

Chris Snee's replacement at right guard? Tom Coughlin says Brandon Mosley gets first crack at the starting job.

I actually expect the O-Line to improve a good bit. Pugh's coming off of a solid rookie year at RT, and at RG it will be hard replacing Snee's leadership but Mosley was looking good in OTAs, and John Jerry struggles in run blocking but is much better in pass protection. I hoping that Richburg wins the starting C spot, and Schawartz should be a huge upgrade at LG. The one thing that could ruin everything is Beatty playing like last year, but I'm optimistic about him bouncing back.

- Tom Coughlin: LB Jameel McClain has foot issue, is being evaluated. McClain left on cart, was at MLB as Jon Beason (foot) recovers.

X-rays negative on LB Jameel McClain's foot. NYG cautiously optimistic, will monitor him. If he is sore tomorrow, MRI could provide clarity.

- NYG RB David Wilson cleared to practice: "I think the fans really want to see me prosper this year."

LB Jon Beason only NYG on PUP list.

- Tom Coughlin thinks Brandon Mosley and Xavier Grimble had "heat-related" issues.

Tom Coughlin’s new mantra for Giants is …

By Steve SerbyJuly 22, 2014 | 7:52pm

On the eve of the first practice of his 11th Giants training camp in charge, coach Tom Coughlin invoked a new Super Bowl rallying cry when he addressed his team Tuesday morning:

Burn the boats!

“It’s a mentality … the idea of coming into something with no turning back,” Coughlin told The Post. “The whole theme is, there’s no turning back.

“If you’re here for the right reason, all right? And you share with us the goals. And you’ve put the time and the effort into it, there is no turning back. Once this thing starts, it’s a full commitment, and we have to have everybody in that circle to get it done.

“And that story just illustrates the way in which the Grecian warriors were treated when they attacked another nation. As they landed onshore, the commanders told them, ‘Burn the boats.’

“Well burning the boats symbolized what? It symbolized that if you survive, you’re gonna defeat the opponent, take his boats, and you will have a chance to return home. But if you don’t do it, you’re not ever going home.

“So, the idea of that type of commitment, the idea of no turning back, is just an illustration, a story, a parable, which drives home a good message, and that’s what I was after.”

Coughlin is presiding over sweeping roster changes and molding this 2014 team into a cohesive unit with the right chemistry will be critical. A year ago, Coughlin watched his boats burn across the first six weeks of the season. He revisited the horror of the first half of the 2013 season with his 2014 Giants.

“It’s unacceptable,” one player said. “Point blank.”

Only a fast start is acceptable.

“It’s getting back to that mentality of winning championships — what does it take? What does it look like? How hard are we gonna have to work out here? The sacrifices,” the player said.

“Something else I think that was key that he talked about I took to heart the most was about burning the boats.

“The ancient Greeks were going to war — as soon as they got to the shore, they burned the boats.

“There’s no turning back.”

It has been written that when Alexander the Great burned his ships after he arrived in Persia in 334 B.C. (Before Coughlin) with an outnumbered force, one of his commanders asked, “How will we get home?” And Alexander’s answer: “We’ll use their ships.”

Some cite Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortez, who landed in Mexico with 11 ships and maybe 500 men in the early 1500s.

“With this act,” 919th Special Operations Group Commander Col. Jim Phillips wrote in 2012, “Cortez ensured the whole-hearted commitment of his men to the cause. With their only means of escape destroyed, the small army went on to conquer the Aztecs and to seize the riches they had set out to capture.”

No retreat. No surrender. All-in. Giants again.

Burn the boats!

Hahahaha, I wanted a David Wilson jersey when he got drafted. Just couldn't do it.

I bought an Hakeem Nicks jersey last offseason, thinking he was staying. **** **** ****
