The bar graphs reflect the average rating given by the voters for each category. Category averages are weighted by importance to generate overall score.

The overview: A shaky quarterback situation explains why the Jets improved only one spot from last offseason even though they moved up from 26th to 16th in non-QB roster. First-year coach Todd Bowles got relatively high marks (13th overall, down from 12th in 2014), while New York's front office (20th to 12th) and drafting (24th to 16th) prospects got a boost. Most of the vital signs appear positive here, but who is the long-term quarterback? --Mike Sando

The dilemma: We will find out if Bowles' faith in offensive coordinator Chan Gailey is misplaced sooner rather than later. Gailey is being entrusted with getting high-level play out of quarterback Geno Smith -- which most critics think is impossible -- and developing rookie fourth-rounder Bryce Petty, who comes from an offense at Baylor that has very little carry-over to most NFL systems. On paper, the 2015 version of the Jets' defense is as good as any in the league, but the talent on that side of the ball could be wasted if Gailey is not able to work some magic with these quarterbacks. --Louis Riddick

The youth movement: The Jets are loaded on the defensive line. They have three studs at defensive end -- Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson and Leonard Williams -- along with an excellent run-stopper at defensive tackle (Damon Harrison). So why did the Jets fall to a four-win team in 2014? The draft didn't take care of other positions, which forced the front office to spent big on the secondary and the offensive line in free agency. --John Clayton

Geno Smith laughed at being ranked last (again) in QB poll: ‘It’s hilarious’
Jason Rowan | July 29, 2015

For the second straight year, Geno Smith found himself in last place in a poll conducted by ESPN of NFL executives in which the presumed starting quarterbacks for the upcoming season were ranked. To hear it from the New York Jets quarterback, the news is more amusing than anything.

“I laugh at that. I laugh at it. It’s hilarious,” Smith said of his ranking as the 32nd of 32 starting quarterbacks, via the New York Post.

While the results of the poll are merely an academic exercise and have no real impact on Smith’s future performance, it’s not like Smith has provided any tangible reason to be ranked any higher. In his first two NFL seasons, both as a starter — save for when he was benched and replaced by Michael Vick last season — Smith has compiled an 11-18 record in 29 starts, and overall has a 57.5 percent completion percentage while throwing for 25 touchdowns to 34 interceptions, with 41 turnovers total.

It’s noted in the report that Smith, upon learning of his dead last ranking last year, told ESPN that he expected to be ranked among the top-five starting signal-callers either this year or the next. His prediction didn’t come anywhere close to fruition.

“It was hilarious last year, too,” Smith said. “It doesn’t matter at this point. We’ve got to work on us as a team. That’s why I hate to talk about individual stuff because it’s a team game. No matter what they rate me, wherever we finish at the end of the year is most important.”

Smith has put in the work this offseason, even working with Tom Brady’s quarterback guru, who said the quarterback appeared “incrementally better” afterward.

Arguably contributing to Smith’s struggles up to this point is the fact that throughout Rex Ryan’s tenure as Jets head coach, quarterbacks rarely seemed to be set up for success, no matter the identity or pedigree of the offensive coordinator.

It will be up to Smith to turn all his doubters into believers. Perhaps working with new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey will serve Smith well. Teammate Willie Colon already has warned Smith not to “crash” the team, so the pressure is already on the young QB.

Prove doubters wrong, Geno.

Jets won't hesitate to bench Geno Smith if he struggles
by Jesse Reed

Rookie New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles isn’t going to blink twice about pulling the plug on Geno Smith if the young quarterback comes out of the gates poorly in September.

Bowles has playoff aspirations in his inaugural season leading Gang Green.

“I’m not going in to be 8-8,” Bowles said (h/t Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News). “Regardless of whether you have pieces or not, my job is to get us to the playoffs and get to the Super Bowl. And 8-8 would not be satisfactory for me.”

Teams that feature a struggling young quarterback don’t make the playoffs very often.

And Smith has struggled early in his career, to say the least. In his first two years as a pro, the West Virginia product has displayed tremendous lapses in judgement (just 25 touchdowns compared to 34 interceptions) and has struggled with accuracy (57.5 percent completion rate).

New York features the talent on both sides of the ball to make a strong playoff push. In particular as it relates to offense, the team’s receiving corps is downright dangerous. With Eric Decker, Brandon Marshall, Jeremy Kerley and rookie Devin Smith out of Ohio State, the Jets could feature a formidable passing attack, provided they had a quarterback who could get the job done.

So if Smith isn’t showing marked improvement to open the season and starts turning the ball over, thus hurting the team’s chances of winning, Bowles won’t hesitate to replace him.

“If you feel that his position or any other position is hurting the team, as a head coach, it’s up to you to do something about it,” Bowles said about Smith. “It’s not a year-long thing for anybody. You earn your keep by the week. You earn your keep by the day. … If somebody is not doing their job, it’s up to me to rectify the situation.”

Waiting in the wings, should Smith get off to a poor start, is veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, formerly of the Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans. While nobody would ever suggest Fitzpatrick as a top-tier quarterback, he does have 89 starts under his belt and has seen some success along the way.

There is a lot of pressure on Smith’s shoulders this season. Most young quarterbacks see their biggest improvements in Year 3, so there is hope for the young man to find success.

With strong quarterback play, the Jets should be a playoff team in 2015. Bowles knows this, his players know it and so do the fans. The leash couldn’t be much shorter for Smith heading into Week 1.

Bowles :pimp: He's not playing around.

Revis won't wear Super Bowl ring around Jets teammates
By Cameron McDonough

It looks like Darrelle Revis finally received his Super Bowl XLIX ring, but don’t expect him to wear it around New York.

Revis, who was a member of the New England Patriots last season, couldn’t go to the team’s ring ceremony at Patriots owner Robert Kraft’s house back in June. However, he did send his mother to pick up the ring, but she wasn’t allowed in.

He eventually received the ring, which he is a big fan of.

“It’s awesome, lots of bling,” Revis told ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

But Revis, who signed a five-year, $70 million deal with the New York Jets back in March, says he won’t wear a ring from another team around his new teammates.

“You’ll see a New York Jets ring when we get it,” the cornerback told ESPN on Wednesday.

Revis also commented on Tom Brady’s Deflategate suspension getting upheld.

“It’s Tom Brady,” Revis told USA Today’s Lorenzo Reyes. “What did you expect? He’s one of the best to probably ever do this. It’s the biggest story in sports today. It’s everywhere you look — on your feeds, Twitter, Instagram — it’s pretty crazy. The league did what it had to do, and they feel that’s the best way to handle the situation.”

The two teams won’t see each other until Week 7, but the rivalry is already kicking into high gear.

“You’ll see a New York Jets ring when we get it,” the cornerback told ESPN on Wednesday.
