I know there's a stock thread but let's talk about non-stock investments:

Franchising

Land/property

Startups

Food trucks

etc

What's everyone doing outside of their 9-5 these days? Would love to learn more about your guys' experiences.

I know there's probably a few NTers that are interested as well.

I definitely would love to own a panera bread or chipotle. Maybe in another 7-10 years?

Great thread.

This year was the first year I've had some $$. I've got a ton of debt, but wanted to invest and make $$ with my money. I went to my bank (B of A)and told them to put my "fortune" (10k) into the highest interest yielding account they offer. That 10k yielded 29 cents/month... I wasn't having it and searched for alternatives.

I started looking at other investment options:

Bonds - can get about ~3% of what you put in, but you gotta wait a couple years

CDs - If you have like 100k+ this is a decent option. You can get ~2.3%+ compounded daily/APY

I came to the conclusion that stocks were the best option, but pose a risk.

Here is a chart of the Standard and poor index 500. (S&P500) http://finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=^gspc+interactive

If you bought one share in 2009 at ~1k(per share) you would have made 150, putting you at 1.15k by 2010, 150 bucks

One share in 2010 at 1.15k by 2011, 1.25k, 100 bucks

One share in 2011 at 1.25k, by 2012,  1.27k 20 bucks

One share in 2012 at 1.27k, by 2013 1.45k 180 bucks

One share in 2013 at 1.45k by 2014 1.83k 380 bucks - Note: last year was exceptionally good for stock market

One share in 2014 at 1.83k, currently, 1978$

I'm not advocating you to invest all your money in this index. I'm just presenting to you what brought me to this conclusion. The worst year at 20 bucks(2011-12), beat out the 29 cents offered to me by my banks highest yielding savings

I'm interested in purchasing property, renting it out eventually.

Pay off a tri-plex, rent it out to 3 people. Get monthly rent checks. I understand there are landlords, bad renters, home owners insurance, all these things associated.

Flipping houses seems like great investment too, but you need $, time, connections that I don't have

I'm thinking of starting a food truck. Sell jerk chicken and other food. If anyone has started one I'd be super interested in knowing their process and all... great thread op

I'll have something to contribute to this thread soon.

mplsdunk mplsdunk may be able to help. think there's someone with a waffle truck on here as well.

anyone ever mess with lendingclub or other P2P lending sites? a buddy of mine mentioned it to me awhile back but I havent really had time to look into the ins and outs of it.

I'd probably pay my debts before looking to invest, especially in speculative fields.
My debts will be automatically paid by public service loan repayment program. I work in public service in a low income, minority area. The gov't is paying off my debt

When o worked there back in 08 don't know how true this is, a manager said it cost 8 mil

I remember there was a thread about buying soda machines and we had a guy who owned a few, regulated them. Anyone recall?

Thinking about starting a pawn shop. Not like a regular pawn shop but a pawn shop for sneakers. Hopefully I get a few bucks for my 16th birthday to start it

Explain this to me please. I was talking to the federal student load consolidation people the other day. Turn out my job as a probation officer may qualify me for some type of plan.

^If you work in a "public service" for a non-profit, or gov't designated 501c3, or a low-income area you will be eligible for loan repayment provided by the gov't. (Cops, firefighters, nurses, teachers, etc.)

This provision was added for the public service employees Ex. Public service defense lawyer with 500k student loans who makes 50k/year. He will be unable to ever pay off his debt because he chose the less lucrative job that serves the public.

After 10 years of service for one of the above designations, your loans will be paid off, in full. You must continue to make your loan payments on-time during the course of the 10-years, so it's in your best interest to get the lowest-paying monthly payment available (there are ones offered at 10% of your income or less).

You fill out the form, sign it, give it to HR. They give it back within 10 mins. You mail it in, they say your in.

This is the jist of it

Off of the top of my head, I would say probation officer is eligible. I consolidated my loans through myfedloan.org and was eligible.

i want to open a roth ira in the very near future and max it out...am considering a second job (my current one leaves me with lots of down time

) just to jump start it

Really need to take an initiative on this, no debt & been stacking (40-60% NET) for the last 3yrs, all sitting in savings (besides 401k & IRA) :x:x:x

Have a ScottTrade account but honestly too uninformed to heavily invest with confidence. Might just hit a bunch of conservative index funds ... beats the .5% in my "high yield" account

Get a thinkorswim paper trade account and learn to trade. Read Brian Shannon's book, watch the InvestorsLive Textbook Trading DVD. Pricey stuff but I've found them helpful.

If your gonna do high yield atleast do the real high ones lol. Im getting .90 interest with barclays, I think there are banks with .95 interest.

I will be seriously getting in to day trading in about a month. If all goes well in about 5-7yrs get into real estate. I was looking into that Brian Shannon book its like $64 on amazon. Ill get it in a few weeks it looks like it will be really useful.

First you have to come up with a design. Then it gets approved. Then the mechanic builds the truck and finally they come out and inspect it. Sounds simple but it takes a long time. Your idea is a good one though. Everyone likes jerk. Hit me up if if you need any specific questions answered.
