I know for me at least I have different pairs to wear on different days. Usually once I get done wearing them, I clean them off if need be then put them back in the box. And when I first get them, depending on the shoe, I spray a little bit of scotch guard on them before hand.

I'm pretty good about keeping mine clean. Got some beaters I wear if it's wet out. Tried the basic $7 stain fighter can from the register. Not sure if it makes a difference.
