Ebola

I never understood the thing about eating bush meat n such. I mean is the meat raw? Or can this virus survive being cooked?
I think I need to brush up on this.

Resident Evil V.....

Kinda scared because I could see a real umbrella corp spreading an outbreak.....

My girl family was planning on visiting Sierra Leone but I'm not letting happen. As far as them taking my daughter :smh: Glad I saw this thread cause I need to bring this up tomorrow

Ohhh boy That sounds like a hostile convo. Lol I'm getting butterflies thinking about it. That feeling of not wanting something to go down yet you have no control to really stop it. Ugh

Nah I kno what it is I'm just saying if there fully aware of how it spreads why would they continue to prepare the meat I. The same manner?? Makes no sense.

i couldn't imagine living in sierra leone right now...i'd be scared as hell. hell, i'm scared as hell reading about this and watching youtube videos.
honestly i read about this a long, long time ago and periodically read things about it but this seems different.

NT never ceases to amaze me with its ******ed doomsday scenarios.

Anyway, if you want an ELI5 version of what's going on, this is a good link.

The way this whole thing started is practically out of a movie.

Luckily, she was admitted into hospital, so the medical workers could track down where she got the infection, and isolate the city from the outbreak. She would at least get some treatment. But then her family forcibly removed her from the hospital.

Immediately, the authorities scrambled to find her. She was a threat to anyone she made contact with, and could start an outbreak in Freetown all on her own.The police managed to finally find her in the house of a traditional healer. The family had taken there in the hope that the healer could help, and fought with the police when they attempted to retrieve her.

They managed to get her into an ambulance, only for her to die before she reached the hospital.

At the very same time, protesters rioted outside of the Freetown hospital. This lead to more clashes with riot police, who fired tear gas into the crowd, and shot a 9 year old in the leg.

This is why it won't/can't spread to Western countries. We actually believe in things like medicine and quarantines. While there is no cure, at least you won't have people forcibly removing infected patients from hospitals and out into the public.

Idk if its cuz I'm American but that bush meat looked disgusting...hairy claws and feets..no thanks

Nah man your not alone, most Africans don't mess with that stuff and it's quite illegal actually. Poaching endangered animals and what not. I lived in a country (not in west Africa) where they would have illegal markets set up at like 5 am in remote locations to sell this stuff.

If your caught poaching or purchasing you will be doing jail time. Some Africans still practice, what we in the west call, animism and they believe these animals have healing powers.

Doctors getting sick too tho... Smh

I'm from Guinea. We usually go back every summer. Not this one smh.

We don't know anyone that has been effected it by it yet.

Never heard about that bush meat thing before. At least not in my country
.

I'm surprised to read that. Where I'm from - Cameroon - bushmeat is considered a traditional delicacy in some regions.

monkey meat??? :x

Yep, along with snake, porcupine, pangolin and other forest animals. It is prohibited to kill monkeys (endangered species) but there is very little enforcement of the law and the hunting and consumption of bushmeat is pretty much unregulated.

That's generally true in the cities, but in the countryside old ways still remain.

The thing about the illegal markets is true though. I remember when my family and I would travel to and from my father's village you would see hunters on the side of the road with their game for sale.

They saying it almost made it to the US, a dude with it leaving Nigeria was taking a flight to Minnesota to see his kids but died before he made it [emoji]128128[/emoji][emoji]128128[/emoji][emoji]128128[/emoji]

The way you worded it is a little off...it could make someone think he died on the plane or something.

He traveled to several African countries and I think I heard that he saw his sick sister. He felt ill after he got off the plane and was taken to a hospital. He died a couple of days later. He never got on a flight headed here...

Although listening to Sanjay yesterday, all he had to do was fill a form out and he could leave. It's scary.

Read a book about ebola called the hotzone as an assignment for undergrad

Ebola is very scary to think about.

I don't recall when it happened, but a strain of Ebola made it to the states in Raleigh NC. It was caused by improper ventilation in a monkey lab. Fortunately it was a much weaker strain than the ones observed in Africa, and the only victim survived without showing violent symptoms

scary stuff. lagos is one of the most populous cities in the world, too. easily the largest in Africa, I believe.

So sad. It's amazing how lack of education, whether through cultural beliefs or lack of support can cause a major impact in communicable diseases still.

That was Reston (Virginia), and it was only found in the monkeys. No humans were infected.
