My theory for the United States is that every world cup produces a generation of new fans. Around 06 when I got into footie everyone was on the Ronaldinho/Nike/Joga Bonito bandwagon so that gen went to Barca.

2010 was around Barca's peak, this time obviously with Messi.

2014 and FIFA (the video game) might produce a generation of Real Madrid fans

Really surprised at Barca's popularity in South America too. Especially in Brazil because I'd assume they aren't fond of Messi.

Also thought since RM is valued at being worth more that it was partially due to a bigger international fan base. And also because they're more historic club and get all the galacticos.
