Ronaldo on the other hand, was a unique situation. Some random teenager, coming from some club in Portugal (I can only imagine the hype if he came from Brazil at that time)

United played Sporting Lisbon in a pre-season friendly in 2003,and after that match all the senior players including Scholes had urged Ferguson to sign him...

The truth is Ferguson, along with Arsenal and Liverpool, had been trailing the unknown teenager for 12 months and already had a first-refusal arrangement in place with Sporting Lisbon.

What that night in the Jose Alvalade stadium did do, however, was subject Ferguson to an almost unprecedented torrent of urging and insistence from his own players.

Former United midfielder Quinton Fortune said: 'We sat in the dressing room after the 3-1 defeat and we were just raving about him. Why wouldn't we? He was unbelievable. Most of us had never seen anyone with such a swagger.'

On the flight home to Manchester that night, Ferguson had to listen to more of the same.

'They wouldn't shut up about it,' said Ferguson with a smile recently. 'They just kept telling me to sign him. In truth. I had realised that night that Ronaldo's secret was now out. We had to get it done.'

So basically Arsenal were to cheap to sign Ronaldo 10 years ago?

**** don't change

Never heard that story about Ronaldo's girl saying he'd be better than Beckham, who was she, pics :nerd:

Jordana Jardel

Was a while ago...so I struggled to find the actual article cause it was in one of the printed papers

"On Becks versus Ronaldo: "Ronaldo is the better footballer. I have no doubt about that. David Beckham is great, a good profesional and very handsome but he became such a major figure partly by hanging out at wealthy parties and being married to the right woman. Ronaldo is pure nautral talent."

Damn, Giuseppe Rossi will have even more knee surgery. This “keyhole” procedure is said to be diagnostic & the same one Hannibal the cannibal had prior to the WC & he bounced back bite & all. It's said this is more a clean up then repair so hopefully he comes back soon... :smh:

Jordana Jardel the girl who dated Ronaldo, her brother at the time was Ronaldo's team mate at Sporting and former European Golden Boot winner Mario Jardel

Man, that was a fun time... didn't have social media or Youtube at the time so had no idea who the kid was!  After that, there was so much buzz whenever he came on... kinda felt the same buzz when Adnan came on last season.  Hopefully, there'll be more of that...

I got to see Figo & Portugal play in Macau back in '02 (I think)... right before the JPN/KOR World Cup.  Obvs Ronaldo wasn't in the picture back then...
Damn, that was a long time ago... damn, I feel old. :wow:

I feel old with you. I was there too. Cousin got tickets and took me even though I hated soccer then. He also lived in a high rise righ across from the stadium so we got to see some practice sessions from the balcony. I couldn't stand soccer before But when you're in another country and nobody else cares for baseball or the nba finals, you have no other choice but watch soccer. And that 02 summer was when I started enjoying it and started to appreciate the game.

Interesting read... Barca got Hannibal cheaper than market value... :rolleyes

TRANSFER MARKET INFLATION CONTINUES AT BIG-5 LEAGUE LEVEL
02.09.2014

Throughout the summer, the CIES Football Observatory has monitored transfers which have been completed at big-5 league level. As a result, we are now able to assess whether clubs have overpaid, underpaid or paid the correct market price for their new signings.

Our ‘right price’ has been calculated as the average between a player’s transfer value both before and after the deal. Significantly, the latter figure also considers the new contract duration of the footballer recruited. Both values have been calculated according to the exclusive CIES Football Observatory statistical model which incorporates nearly 1,500 fee paying transfers completed since 2009 (see below).

Our new data analysis has revealed that overall clubs paid on average 16% more than they invested in the five previous years for players with similar characteristics (add-ons included). This confirms the ongoing inflation trend of the transfer market at the top end of the football pyramid. The inflation trend is mainly due to the sums spent by a handful of wealthy clubs. This was notably the case for Manchester United with regard to Angel Di María (+30 million € between the right price and fee reported), for Paris St-Germain for David Luiz signing (+ 29 million €) and for Real Madrid in the case of James Rodríguez (+25 million €).

At the opposite end of the table, our analysis shows that the existence of buy-out clauses and/or non-sporting related issues allowed Barcelona to reduce their offer for Luis Suárez (-12 million € between the right price and money invested). The same holds true for Chelsea with Diego Costa’s signing (-10 million €). In absolute terms, Mario Balotelli was the most under-paid player (-16 million €).

The full picture for all players transferred for a fee of at least 10 million € (including add-ons) is presented in the 79th edition of the Big-5 Weekly Post. We also kindly remind you that our unique and simple online calculator to estimate the current transfer value of big-5 league players is freely accessible here.

CIES Football Observatory’s statistical model

The CIES Football Observatory academic team has developed an exclusive statistical model to assess the transfer value of players and predict transfer fees. This powerful econometrical model is based on the in-depth analysis of a sample of nearly 1,500 players transferred for a fee from big-5 league teams since the summer transfer window preceding the 2009/10 season. The statistical model developed includes a multitude of variables relating to the following areas: age, length of remaining contract, position, player performance at club level for the most recent and previous seasons, results of the clubs for which players are employed, as well as players’ international experience and results of national team represented.

I understand we all have bias and team preference but it doesn't belong in the thread title...

Objectivity is a lost art in sports fanhood, but some of us should utilize it on occasion.

I don't think it's that serious my guy. Honestly it adds some spice to the thread

We're always in here throwing shots at each others teams either way, no one should take it personally though.

That Ronnie debut for Man Utd

...not so sure about the hair though.

Can't remember a time when I've been so disinterested to watch an England match, guess I'll go through the motions because it's the "done thing"
