You also grew up in America, so that's to be expected. Soccer didn't have that reach in America when Maradona was doing what he does....hell we barely get soccer highlights on US sports channels now. It's not shocking to hear people don't know who he is.

Most Americans don't even know American history so I don't expect anyone to know or care about a sport that isn't as popular here than elsewhere. Who cares. I do find it amusing to see the cavalier attitude about it but oh well.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has such an award. The 2013 winner was Zheng Zhi a midfielder for Guangzhou Evergrande FC in the Chinese Super League. They also have a best international player award for those that play in leagues outside of Asia. Last year's winner was Inter's Yuto Nagatomo.
