Popularity and the success of sports are two different things in SA.

Football is the majorities' favorite sport, but due to Apartheid, the majority of investment in sport went into cricket and rugby (and success has followed in both sports). So basically for the next 20/30/40/ maybe even 50 years, the majority of the population will have to wait around until the PSL gets the additional investment from the private sector to topple rugby and cricket.

I will say though, things have improved drastically over the past few years. With the branded PSL, ABSA (Barclay's) became the official sponsor, PSL games are now broadcast throughout the continent of Africa, derbies have gotten bigger, and there's been investment in from local millionaires & billionaires that have been other teams coming to challenge for the title.

It used to be Pirates and Chiefs, and everyone else falling into place somewhere. Now there's Pirates, Chiefs, Sundowns and even SuperSport United (although they haven't been so great in the past season or 2).

Hopefully one day I will own a football club. I want to do something similar to http://www.kickoff.com/news/43063/sivutsa-stars-sold-to-shauwn-and-sbu-mpisane-moving-to-durban who basically bought a tiny club who plays in a lower division, and will build it up overtime, so that they're kids/grandkids will hopefully own one of the biggest clubs on the continent over time. But truth be told, I'm more likely to open a football academy than ever owning a club.

Good Stuff. Never knew that.

Sport is sometimes a good unifier for a country with different ethnic backgrounds. But if each ethnic background in that country has it's own preferred sport - that kind of blows.

Damn apartheid :smh:

You couldn't be more right....a perfect example within this context...

Nothing confirmed yet.....but.... :smokin

"Johannesburg - Following spread of the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa, 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) host nation, Morocco, is opting to withdraw themselves from hosting the 30th edition of the continental showpiece.

Morocco requested the Confederations of African Football (CAF) to postpone the tournament which was set for January next year, due to the Ebola epidemic, which CAF has turned a blind eye to.

Earlier reports revealed that South African Football Associations (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan is set to meet with the CAF boss Issa Hayatou to discuss a way forward as South Africa is set to replace the North African giants."

My son had this kid that was a guest player for the club for the tournament this past weekend... A father who knows the kid's family well told me the father of this kid was a big time executive or public figure or something & was murdered several years ago in SA... The mother came back stateside & remarried... I'll have to find out what the father's name is to read up about it... The mother is really really nice...

Anyway a vid of Ox talking about himself looking like a ninja turtle....

Edit - :smokin:smokin:smokin I love the way Pep reacted to Jose playing mind games with the press before the CL semi final back in '11...

Their were so many things lost in translation in that Pep video. Terrible job by the Telegraph.

That was a classic response tho, Pep was somewhat the only manager who didn't fall for Jose tricks.

Wenger and Pellegrino should learn from that, but they won't

Am I the only person who thought klinnsmen was telling the truth? Reality hurts but I can't say he was lying

Enhhhh...I like Klinsmann, but dude seems to be the type that will never take fault for his own shortcomings. It's always somebody else's failures.
I can agree with him on MLS to an extent, but both he and Garber should **** already.

need cliff notes on the situation, unless i already understand it which is jurgen thinks the MLS should adopt a promotion/relegation which i think would be cool

That should be standard procedure, cause it then makes those bottom 5 teams play like warriors during crucial matches, which can easily affect the title race making it more exciting (see. Crystal Palace v Liverpool 2013/14)

Klinsmann's US side is only going to be as good as the players he has available to him. He wants the players (especially the younger ones) to push themselves so that they can earn spots on Euro teams instead of playing for MLS which is still a very weak league so that they become better players.

Poor Don Garber finally had enough & responded to Klinsmann in the presser yesterday. I just wanted to pat him on a shoulder & tell him it'll get better dude...

Damn, today is the 10 year anniversary of Messi's debut with the first team...He was 17 years old... :smokin

I'm not sure how it is where you guys live, but I know a lot of better American athletes would get introduced to the sport where I am if it weren't a "Fall sport" and competing with football

It should be mandated that it's a Spring sport everywhere and the pool of players and talent will grow.

I know in Long Island at least that a lot of the top athletes here would give it a go and maybe fall in love with the game and eventually drop football altogether if it weren't competing with Football in the Fall for high school teams.

Football players here get ******* b, not soccer players.

Interesting piece about turf & possible links to cancer...

I also think once American players start breaking into EUR leagues and start seeing that 100k pounds a week, and how many years they can keep playing, futbol will grow in popularity amongst the youth.
