I'm not questioning the Don's selection, but imo Marcelo > Coentrao

I guess Coentrao is more likely to give balance since Ronnie's defensive work rate on that flank isn't great and Marcelo pushes up more/is less aggressive defensively

If Carvajal continues to be careless and Arbeloa struggles for fitness, two options Ancelotti could experiment with. Marcelo starts at LB and flip Coentrao to RB even though he's a left-footed player. Or as good as Ramos is centrally, return him to his original RB position with Varane and Pepe in the middle.

Agree with that. Although Pepe's offensive ability does impress me at times, I wouldn't want him at DM. That dude marauding up and down the pitch is asking for reckless challenges, also wouldn't want to move him or Ramos because that CB pairing was something to watch last season. Especially when they shut down Bayern.
