So I have my first professional job interview this Friday.

What can I expect? What type of questions should I prepare for?

Can the professionals of NT chime in, especially those in the Public Relations/Communications Field?

doubt I'm any help but interviewed last year for an advocacy position with a ed nonprofit....they were asking how i was able to aware and bring in more people in my outreach efforts...thats all i really remember

obviously didn't get the job

Tell me about a time that you disagreed with your manager. What was the situation, how did you handle it, what was the outcome. Edit - You better have followed your managers direction.

Tell me about a time you lead a group of your peers, and convinced some if them to follow your lead, even though they may have originally wanted to take a different approach. How did you get them to follow your lead?

Tell me about a time you had an upset customer. What was the situation, how did you resolve it, what was the outcome.

Etc, etc, etc. They'll want specific examples. If you can clearly explain the situation, the action you took, and the outcome, you'll get the offer.

Also - Do not leave without telling them that you want the job. Literally, "I want this job." They want to know you want the job. Interviewing alone may not signal that.

Every interview I've had they've asked me those questions. Study up on those plus others and even if you don't have a specific example that May have happened to you, use a situation that happened to someone else or make up one that's believable. Definitely have a good answer for what are your strengths/weaknesses

good advice here... make sure you CLOSE hard, like said above tell them you want the job

" Thanks for your time today, I want to reiterate my feelings that I would be a great fit for your organization... is there any other information about my experience that I can provide, or anything I can clarify before we conclude?"

also since communications role, bring in a non-academic writing sample just in case...newsletter, press release, press pitch, white paper, speech, SOP (if technical), proposal, RFP/RFI...just something that shows you can effectively communicate

* at the end they are more than likely going to ask "Do you have any question for us?" and ask "Is there anything else you would like to see from me? Any writing samples perhaps...?" and slide them a few different copies...IF they don't ask for one up front or they could ask for a sample going into the next round...just be prepped

Man, I was interviewing for the local electrical union and I didn't do this. I was planning to but got caught by surprise during the interview and kind of froze a bit. :smh:

Don't make the same mistake I did.
