I was having this discussion with my girl, talking about people who make [insert religion] religious rap, r&b, rock, etc. One side of the argument was that religious music is only right when it's the holy traditional music, the other side of the argument was that the genre shouldn't matter if the positive message is delivered. What is your guys take on it?

Not that I care, but as long as the message is there, that's all that truly matters.

You should be able to talk about your god/religion in whatever fashion you like IMO. I'm not religious but I have heard some banging songs from different genres and had me singing along.

Like most forms of art, music was always rooted in and inspired by religion to begin with anyway.

My argument though, is that everything wondrous that has been "inspired" by religion could have been done equally so without it... it's simply because religion was either the only real socially accepted way of thinking or the financial investor, that it (unfairly) gets the credit.

So to me, the message isn't as important just because an artist uses "God" to get that message across...

Believe it or not, people without religion are capable of just as much love, empathy and goodness as those who claim theirs comes from a holy source.

To me, the fact that nature evolved to such complexity as to produce a species capable of such amazing expression is the true wonder.

*Just my opinion.
Albeit supported by an enormous plethora of indisputable scientific facts, research and evidence

I've read some articles that say that good lyrical content isn't even enough, if the beat has you focusing on the musical aspects of the song instead of the lyrics/ the message, then it isn't "real: Christian music

Christian Rap is trash to me anyway, and this is from someone who listens to secular rap like 90% of the time. if I listen to gospel it's more traditional sounding.

i hate religious music more than i hate country music because every single religious song is talking about the same thing.

its terrible.

This is an age old debate inside and outside religious circles. I'm a Christian and enjoy both secular and "Christian" music. I've come to realize that the Christian music industry and the way it's run is no different than secular. Both have their separate agendas and try to place artists within a certain box to further their purpose and goals.

Many Christians I know advocate that if it isn't "Christian" or praise/worship then it's a sin to listen to or whatever. I personally believe it's more of a matter of a person's individual convictions. Music is definitely an influencing force and has an affect on people. I personally can handle those affects to where it does not lead me astray in my faith. There are definitely some great music artists that are stuck in that Christian music box like the rapper Lecrae, who I think make great music, even if you aren't a Christian like he is. Then there's bands that are Christian in their faith but have broken outside just that part of the industry and you hear them on secular radio like Switchfoot and Anberlin.

The message of the music shouldn't break the standards of the belief system it supports.
So it doesn't matter the genre/ instruments/ artist. I just has to deliver the same messages as your beliefs
without using contrary language, ideology, and themes.
