Stanford study : White people react to evidence of white privilege by claiming greater personal hardships; deny existence of inequities

Researchers at Stanford's Graduate School of Business have found that white people respond to evidence that they are privileged by their race by insisting that they face greater hardships in life. 

In a study published in the November issue of Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, L. Taylor Phillips and Brian S. Lowery point out that progress on racial equality is limited by the fact that many whites deny the existence of inequities. 

"Despite this reality, policy makers and power brokers continue to debate whether racial privilege even exists and whether to address such inequity," the researchers noted. "One reason for this inaction might be an unwillingness among Whites to acknowledge racial privilege — acknowledgment that may be difficult given that Whites are motivated to believe that meritocratic systems and personal virtues determine life outcomes." 

"However, claiming personal life hardships may help Whites manage the threatening possibility that they benefit from privilege." 

The researchers argued that understanding the reaction to evidence of racial inequality was important because whites who did not feel that they personally benefited from their ethnicity would be less willing to support policies that were designed to reduce racial inequality

Afrocentric couple undermined by her affair with a white dude. Can't recall the last time i've seen a functional black couple in mass media, more specifically in movies. Most would say Will Smith is the best we got going and take a look at his past few roles.

Gonna come off as a reach, but they type-cast certain actors to build them up and develop an archetype in your subconscious mind so you associate that image with your everyday reality. Example Keanu Reeves usually acts in a christ messiah type role.

Tyler James Williams has been planted in that role, hence every one hates a black christ, and in this movie he was a homosexual.

i could give 2 damns what your sexual preference is, but from an objective point of view art determines the landscape of the future, and if youre type casting a messiah role actor in physical activity that doesnt yield the natural process of procreation, what are you trying to say? 

It was a bunch of other stuff, and this is just my opinion, it was an attempt to colonize the contemporary thoughts and usher them in a controlled direction with a response that has been long prepared.

what does this mean? i didn't find "dear white people" to be a particularly enjoyable watch but i respect its perspective, its been a minute since i've seen it but to my mind the whole film was about how the roles people are expected to play can be conflicting/imprisoning; it seemed pretty transparent in that respect...

i understand the criticism but the president, though he is a person of color, is still a politician; granted he can set up his own agenda(s) but is still subject to doing things for political expediency...while maybe not using as direct language as most would like, he is basically speaking to the issues that disproportionately effect communities of color

It's definitely transparent in current issues, but that's part of the process in the mind control. They give you a legitimate issue, then give you a contrived resolution that subconscious mind associates with that issue. Because the subconscious mind can't tell difference between a movie and reality, the resolution is interpreted as a valid response to the issue.


There is a big push to show black men as neutered push overs. I felt that homosexual angle was a central part of the film, but it wasn't marketed that way in the media, which seems to suggest for me that the whole film was designed to colonize the minds of progressive blacks who flocked to the movie thinking they were going to see a reflection of themselves within an engaging storyline.

The chick that went the hardest was just going through a phase while living a contradiction.

The movie makers knew that a lot of conscious people luv a contradiction in their own lives. It was intended to take steam out of the movement by highlighting a vulnerability among many progressive black people

that's interesting, because when i think of the stereotypical visage of the black man, it is a hyper-masculine, hyper-physical, hyper violent one...i think in general, men cast in the role of "intellectuals" are portrayed as slightly effeminate & ineffectual, irrespective of color; such is the growing anti-intellectual stance of the culture at large...some of that is changing with the whole nerdy/smart entrepreneurial "start-up" culture starting to take root in popular culture but roles that are outside of or add nuance to whatever the stereotypical prototypes are generally more challenging to audiences & fewer and far between...

contradiction, i believe, was partially a theme of the movie...and i think you are right to say the parallels to the contradictions in our lives make it an effective tool for storytelling but my understanding was this was an entirely independent (maybe it was modestly funded?) film made by a youngish 1st time black director?
 
Went to see Dr Umar speak here in Brooklyn yesterday.
VERY POWERFUL.

He questioned the march this weekend but said out of respect he would go to see if Minister Farrakhan had a "black agenda" to introduce, and he was holding back from judgement before witnessing such plan or lack thereof.

Attacked the structure of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. The idea of equating our problems with LBGT, "illegal immigrants", and feminism. Highlighted the fact NONE of these groups had to prove they were HUMAN before asking for rights etc.

Spoke about his school. It was just alotta REAL ****. I don't wanna reveal too much cause I'm sure it's devils lookin for info on the speech since they couldn't get in (tho I didn't see any tryin to do so)

Sitting next to a 70 year-old sista that looked maybe 45 at best. Melanin on fleek.
