NFL Regression Party! Which Teams Will Disappoint Us This Year?

49ers

They Might Regress: The Niners’ defense should be good again, but it’s hard to imagine they’ll be great like the past few years. They lost Donte Whitner/Hitner in the secondary, and more important, they’ll play the first half of the season without NaVorro Bowman and Aldon Smith, two of the best defensive players in the entire league. The season hasn’t even started yet, and the Niners already have all kinds of bad luck.

Related: The 49ers have lost their first two preseason games by a combined score of 57-3. Maybe this isn’t cause for concern, because preseason football is meaningless. On the other hand, one of the reasons they’ve been getting destroyed like this is because the backup quarterbacks in San Francisco (Blaine Gabbert, Josh Johnson) are just that horrendous. 57-3 is how Blaine Gabbert’s entire career has gone.

Paying Colin Kaepernick this summer was a no-brainer. But for someone who runs that often in a division full of outrageous defenses, not having a decent backup plan is insane.

If he stays healthy, we’ll get the same Kaepernick of old — a few unbelievable games, a bunch of ordinary games, and one or two games where he’s unbelievable and then ordinary (like last year’s NFC title game). But this year, it all comes with a running game that won’t be as good (Frank Gore is 31, Carlos Hyde hasn’t done much this preseason), and a defense that won’t be as dominant. Maybe Kaepernick’s good enough to keep things clicking like usual, but he’ll have to be better than he’s been the past two years. It just seems like it’s all setting up for year of struggles with Kap and Jim Harbaugh and the Niners, followed by the inevitable season of redemption next year.

Is this all mostly a gut feeling? Absolutely. Every year people pick the Niners to take a step back, only not many people are predicting it this year. That’s how you know it’ll happen.

They Might Not Regress? N/A. It’s the season for bold predictions, just go with it. It’s fun to root against Jim Harbaugh.

Regression Probability: 10 And so many Harbaugh faces where it looks like he just smelled a fart. Football season!

Best division in football, greatly appreciate the strong team defenses. I have it Niners, Hawks, Cards, Rams. But I'm tempted to flip STL into the third spot with all the defensive injuries for Arizona compiling.

They lost Donte Whitner/Hitner in the secondary but we added Bethea....who many feel is BETTER than Whitner, and more important, they’ll play the first half of the season without NaVorro Bowman and Aldon Smith still speculation on how long Aldon will be suspended for, two of the best defensive players in the entire league. The season hasn’t even started yet, and the Niners already have all kinds of bad luck.

If he stays healthy, we’ll get the same Kaepernick of old ridiculous to write off the chance that Kap will improve in his SECOND full year as a starter.— a few unbelievable games, a bunch of ordinary games, and one or two games where he’s unbelievable and then ordinary (like last year’s NFC title game). Who wrote this trash?  @a55a5in11?

Niners defense could easily be worst in the division. Will be surprised if they're top 10.

Rams will continue to fail to develop any of their lauded first round picks.

QB play will be STL's downfall, prevention from entering the elite tier.

Arizona has the worst defense without Washington and Dockett, not to mention Dansby leaving.

based off of what? 2 preseason games?

where the starters fail to even play a full quarter?

Worst?

I hope Walmart discontinues beige Khakis and Harbaugh has mental breakdown on live video when he finds out

Arizona was better at D than SF last year. Now they have no CBs. Relying on 50-year old Justin Smith, suspended Aldon smith, injured Bowman.... That talent they had a couple years ago is looking thin.

Also STL still doesn't have a particularly good defense outside of the pass rush.

why do you guys continue to believe losing rogers and brown is such a 'huge' lost for us? Yeah, sure, the CBs now arent exactly known, but the way you guys underrate them...yikes. We have way more physical CBs now that arent afraid to make plays.

Carlos Rogers sucks and him coming back for the NFCCG was a large reason why we didnt win the game.  He was the one who gave up that huge touchdown on 4th down and he had a stupid penalty at the end of the first half that potentially cost us points.

(Go ahead Seahawks fans.  Flame me for that opinion.  You know you were planning on it anyway)

Patrick Willis isn't the same player he use to be.

I wouldn't be shocked if Niners did finish in 3rd because of injuries

Wasnt this same topic on the defense just discussed in the niners thread less than a week ago?

Our corners are being underrated. Brock had a great year last year and Culliver hopefully returns to form.

Let's not forget Dontae Johnson fits the corner mold in SF perfectly. They added Ward to pair with Reid, increasing physicality with their safety play. Bethea still has a few good years back there as well. T-Brock is dumb underrated.

We've been through this about STL. Safety play? Yes, a red flag. Their corners are legit in my eyes, starting with Janoris.

Except for you're wrong about Bradford, Champ.
Remember you being one of the last to defend Sammy. I believe it was a Monday night game when he overthrew Pettis badly for a sure TD, that was the point I quit on Bradford. Wouldn't be mad if you were right and I was wrong. Want to see the young Rams flourish, their defense (front 7) deserves it.
