How easy is it to start up an app?

I had a pretty good idea for an app. How hard is it to get this type of thing off the ground? What would be the steps and avenues I would have to go through?

In short, very hard.  There's so many factors:
  • How will your app benefit me?
  • Are you technical? If not, can you sell?
  • Where and how will you find a technical co-founder? Being a non-technical founder, how do you assess their capabilities?
  • How many founding members do you need? How will you split equity?
  • What if your app is 90% complete and your technical co-founder(s) jumps ship?
  • How will you build a great team? If I'm a great engineer/sales person, why should I join you?
  • How will you go about funding?
  • You raise $100k, $300k, $1m -- what do you do with it?
  • How do you acquire your first 100 users? 1,000? 10,000?
  • You burned through all your emergency savings and your idea fails. How will you handle it?
These are typical questions of early stage startups.

If you're sold on your idea, validate  it first with potential users before actually building anything. Call 3 people right now and try to get them to PayPal you $X for it.  So many people start building something without actually knowing that people will pay for it. Think of how many people you know who started making a website or writing a business plan without actually talking to a single customer.  A few months later and time wasted, nothing real gets done.  But it was great idea.

You can either learn coding yourself or you could pay someone to build one for you.

Check elance.com if you are looking to outsource.

Do a search on Allen Wong. He's had massive success in the app world.

It depends. If you are trying to learn how to code then here are some resources: Codeschool.com, udacity.com & treehouse.com. Build a prototype then get some experienced developers and try and get some seed funding. There are plenty of resources for this. Angel.co and some others I can't recall of the top of my head. If you need help PM me, I'm looking for some side projects to work on outside of work.
