The Sleep help thread Vol: I just want some Shuteye!

For me it's the stress... i try to work out at night to get "tired" but I end up sleeping for about 3 hours and i'm up the rest of the night. it's bad.

Y'all up?

I literally had to run down stairs to my buildings lil gym and hit the exercise bike for about 30 min.

Bad idea.

Seems like that just energized me.

Have trouble sleeping. Have had this prob for years. Also very rarely I sleepwalk. The lady loves when that happens lmao. Last time I walked out the apartment and woke up when I shut the door. In my tshirt and undies. Was banging on the door to get let in lol.

Not sleepy now but I just popped two benedryls. Thats how I usually deal with not being able to sleep. Not the greatest way but it works. Otherwise I would get no sleep. :-(

Background: as a kid I would sleep walk, have lucid dreams, sleep paralysis, talk in my sleep. When I got to hs I stopped sleep talking/walking but the rest remained. I'd fall asleep in every class, then at night be energized and sleep 2 or 3 hrs. My senior year award was "most likely to fall asleep in class" I complained to drs. They sent me to psychiatrists bc they thought I had stress issues. (Looking back I was just cranky bc I wasn't ******* sleeping!).

COLLEGE/grad school: wasn't an issue bc most classes were recorded. I never went and would listen to them at my leisure, so I avoided it. Plus I was young, didn't need to sleep.

POST-college: problem really hit me bc it was the first time I had to wake up early and be alert daily, and I was getting old. I was soooooo tired at all times. It got to the point where if I slept 1 hr or 8 hrs I'd feel the same. So it became a bad cycle of me not sleeping at all. Then migraines and sensitive vision came. So I resorted to booze, NyQuil and Benadryl. Not wanting to be the next Jimmy Hendrix I realized I needed to get this fixed. I finally found a dr. who listened and agreed it wasn't some bs stress issue (my life is pretty good, I never actually really had these issues. I would just be cranky and not want to be bothered from not sleeping. I think drs didn't want to listen). My new dr. Suggested a sleep study. My insurance company made me jump through hoops, I had to go to a shrink for 3 months weekly bc they wanted me to prove it wasn't stress, depression, etc. bc the test is really expensive

I got the test and was diagnosed with a sleeping disorder. They told me that my body was operating as if I hasn't slept in 36 hrs, even when I slept! They prescribed me a drug, it's a stimulant I take in the morning. It gets me going and I fall asleep at night. I can stay up if need be, but when I decide to sleep I CRASH! Honestly getting sleep is the best thing that's ever happened to me. The benefits are:
-more alert
-no migraines
-don't need caffeine (I actually abstain now)
-no more Benadryl
-less irritated
-improved memory!
-lost weight and gained muscle
Etc.

In additon to the prescribed drug I practice what they call good sleep hygiene:
-my bed is for sleeping and sleeping only. Even if I smash a chick I do it on the opposite side that I sleep. If I go to the left side of the bed my body knows it's for sleeping only
-I make my bed every morning. Not sure how this helps, but it's nice to get into a nice clean bed
-I set aside 15 mins before bed to drink sleepy herbal tea and read something not intellectually stimulating that's not in electronic format. (Usually espn the mag)
-I don't use any electronics 15 mins before bed. They stimulate brain activity
-I turn OFF the iPhone/ipad. If there's a true emergency my fam/friends have my roommates number and can call the roommate to wake me up.

I typed all this up bc getting over this has helped my life in so many ways. If you have health insurance, even if you don't have the same symptoms as me, go get checked out and demand answers. I didn't realize it at the time but lack of sleep will effect your ability to make money!....even live (directly related to many heart issues).

And I don't endorse the idea that a drug is a cure all or getting it illegally, that's btwn you and your dr. And it's def NOT the first option you want to look into. My dr. Told me for most people the drug I was prescribed doesn't work by itself. It did for me so I didn't have to try alternative methods. Whatever the reason see a dr and get it figured out y'all.

Good luck my sleepless brotheren. Feel free to pm if you have questions.

Bouta cut everything off now...got a triple stye developing outta nowhere on my left eye too. :smh: Talk about irritating...

I've been regularly sleepwalking the past few months smh. I'm currently 20 and have been prescribed sleeping medication for roughly 2 years now.

In most cases I wouldn't recommend sleeping medication but it has been lifechanging for me. I've always been terrible at sleeping in but since a few years ago it got so bad I couldn't concentrate during the day, had random memory loss of multiple hour intervals and got into a few bicycle accidents in just a week. I'd be cycling home then the next thing I know I'm upside down off the road somewhere.

Melatonin and other natural sleep aids wouldn't put me to sleep either so I was prescribed Ambien and all the problems went away.

Cannibus trumps all. I have terrible insomnia and smoking cannibus is the only thing that will help me. And also the only med that I'd allow in my body, since I wouldn't take any type of pill for fear of harm on my liver. Cannibus is still the safest and most efficient way to cure insomnia and without any side effects. #smokeweedeveryday

Pills generally aren't any more harmful on your liver than mj is for your lungs.

I've tried marijuana before and it didn't put me to sleep at all. Tried it for a week and ended up taking my Ambien each night after struggling for 5-6 hours.

It made trying to fall asleep a little less boring I suppose.

Ambien causes physically and psychological addiction and has the potential for overdose, addiction, death. No thank you. Your addicted to them now which is why cannibus didn't do it for you and u caved and had to take your ambien. It does work tho. Ive taken it before. Jus rather use something natural like cannibus instead of chemical like ambien when possible.

Ambien isn't the reason. I guess it just doesn't work for me as I tried it before getting my first sleeping medication prescription and it didn't do much either.

I tried every natural sleep aid possible before starting pills and none of them worked. Most didn't even affect me whatsoever tbh.

I started 1mg of melatonin and tried up to 9mg and didn't notice a thing at any dosage.

Did u try the natural herb cannibus?

Yes. Indica strain straight from Amsterdam.

Made me more relaxed while trying to fall asleep but didn't actually make me sleep.

If anything it made the night less frustrating as I tended to get annoyed after a few hours of struggling.

Ok so what's your point?
Not sure what yours is. For some people it works, for others it doesn't.

I just don't really agree with the "sleeping medication is the worst, never use it" posts here.

Obviously I recommend exhausting every other option before starting medication but it does work and can be very helpful for many people.

I clearly posted that I've taken it and it worked but choose not to take it again because of its harmful side effects and potential for physical addiction and withdwawals, as apposed to cannibus which doesn't have those nasty side effects and MOST IMPORTANTLY doesn't have the potential for overdose, physical addiction, withdrawal and possibly death. I smoked cannibus every single day multiple times all for medicinal purposes for 5 years straight and had to stop and stopped cold turkey at the drop of the hat and had no kind of physical withdrawal whatsoever. Only thing was that I was just mad that I couldn't have my herb/medicine. The same way people get when they can't get their coffee in the morning. If u were to take ambien every single day for 5 years and tried to stop cold turkey u would prob be hospitalized or possibly even worse case scenario die if u were to abruptly stop taking that Ambien.

I'd recommend trying more than 1 strain of cannibus before giving up on it and just taking the much more dangerous DRUG ambien. Cannibus comes in over thousands of different strains. Some intended more for sleep specifically whereas others are intended to aid other problems. Jus cause 1 strain didn't work doesn't mean cannibus can't be a much more safer and better way to cure or treat your insomnia.

ive been getting by on 4 hours of sleep for a few years now sorta used to it

only down side are the hallucinations

some tips:

stay off your phone/computer 1-2 hours before you are going to sleep. Your brain needs to unwind before you can sleep, also the lights supress your melatonin level.

read before you go to bed. Read 10-20 pages laying down and you will fall asleep

make sure your room is clean/comfortable. Dont have clothes on your bed, or on the floor

Drink a glass of water before bed

Do some streching before you go to bed

I'll second that. Reading a book does work. Repped
