Drunk Driving Vol. Please don't do it.

We talking opinions and laws.... Driving drunk is putting someone at risk, I totally agree, but like most crime its not illegal until you get caught. And thinking someone deserves to spend a lot of time in jail based upon the possibility of harm is ridiculous. Something that will NEVER pass.

All in all i'm sorry those two young girls died for something as senseless as that. Not trying to take that away at all.

always sad to hear about lives taken before their time...

this is where something like automated driving systems could save a good amount of lives...i hope the technology makes huge bounds in the not too distant future

Did you read anything more than the first sentence I wrote? Says it there as clear as day that 1 year was too long but other harsher forms of punishments like fines and suspensions should come.

Yea man I did, OP is talking about a year sentence...you said "some time and a HUGE fine"

I been on the record that drunk driving laws are harsh as it is.
I understand the reason for it and the number of avoidable incidents that happen because of drunk driving but we shouldn't make any harsher penalties.

As it is DUI offenses are expensive as hell. Now you want to throw in time behind bars?
Do you people real life?

first time you should lose your license for a year. anything after should be jail and rehab.

RIP to everyone who was lost because of some drunk moron.

Obviously the punishments aren't bad enough because plenty of people don't care. "Expensive as hell" is subjective.

To say it's subjective is to bring in a whole socio economic debate into this.
We not trying to get into that.

I understand OP being furious cause this hit so close to home but 1 year loss of license on first offense?
1 year behind bars on first offense?
Offenses that may not have even resulted in any accidents.

This is just a bit excessive.

Why do you feel it is excessive to lose your license for a year for driving drunk on a first offense?

Would it be okay if it was a second/third/forth offense?

Do you know what losing a license for a year would do to most people?

Americas public transportation sucks unless your in places like NY, Chicago, Philly ect.

You ask that question as if penalties getting harsher with multiple offenses is a groundbreaking concept.

I'm well aware. But its avoidable and would be the drivers fault completely.

Driving drunk is a choice that people make, albeit not a 100% conscious one.

I'm just not seeing how it's excessive. Seems like a favor to everyone else on the road.

Because driving under the influence doesnt warrant a year in jail, its that simple.

You telling me if I drink a Mkes Hard Lemonade and drive down to Kroger and get some groceries I deserve a YEAR in jail!?!?!?!?!!??!??! :x

I said suspended license though.

Who the hell gets above .08 off a single hard lemonade?

It's excessive because in many parts of this country, life revolves around driving.

So a person makes one bad decision on one night and get behind the wheel drunk. They get pulled over by the cops after 3 blocks. The person didn't cause an accident but they get the DUI.

Now this person that caused no harm to anyone loses their license for a year.
- So their kids can't go to school anymore because the parent can't drive them anymore?
- They lose their job because they can't get to work?

Way too big of a punishment for a person that didn't even cause an accident.

I get it man. I know it's tragic, irresponsible, and completely avoidable. For as often as it happens, fatal car accidents caused by drunk drivers are honestly not as common as you would think it is (percentage wise).

Does that punishment not make you want to drive drunk due to the high risk?

I see where you're coming from but people think about stuff like that AFTER they get a DUI.

You can't drive your kids to school if you wrap your car around a tree, either.

I don't know, agree to disagree. I'm all for leniency on certain issues but drunk driving isn't one of those things.

Sad thing is I don't even think harsher punishments would curb the problem

IMO drunk driving is such an unnecessary risk for other and yourself that I don't care what the punishment for it is. Just just me though.

And there's "I just had one beer technically I'm "drunk" but I'm not tipsy at all" and then there's completely wasted just cruising home after a Saturday night.

I think BAL should be taken into account as well when dealing out punishments

I think people are overlooking that driving is a privilege for individuals who are capable and responsible.

BAL thing most definitely. Like Derry said, a hard lemonade then a trip to grab some groceries doesn't seem horrible to me.

It's people who are damn near black out drunk falling asleep at the wheel swerving that I'm worried about.

also this.

I hope this piece of **** burns in hell. Waste of space.
Dude will get whats comin to him but, y'all being a lil harsh.

I'm pretty sure 90% of NTers between 21-35 have driven home when they shouldn't have at least once, and it only takes one time for something tragic to happen.

I feel bad for both parties.

For all we know dude could of been a stand up guy who made a terrible mistake.

RIP to the lost.
Collins was booked for felony drunken driving resulting in injury or death and vehicular manslaughter. The 29-year-old's criminal history reveals several run- ins with the law, including disorderly conduct while being intoxicated in march and may of this year.
Yeah real stand up guy..

I don't give a **** if he donated millions to charity. This piece of scum did this twice while getting caught, and the third time he got caught two innocent women were killed.

who knows how many times he's done while not getting caught. ***** scum of the earth.

Yeah I was talking to my dad, he said he won't see no more then 5-6 years.

Laws need to be changed. This cannot be tolerated at all.

You get caught once, you go to jail for at least a year. This could happen to anyone at any time.

I didnt even know her like that, but man am i walking around with a heavy heart these last few days.
R.I.P to the victims and all but

Hell no man. lmao a YEAR for driving drunk because of the POSSIBILITY of causing harm? Naw you can have that fantasy.
While  a year in jail is excessive, I'd say at least 2-3 weeks in jail, and suspension of license for a year. I mean how many innocent lives need to be taken for these laws to get tougher?

Dude's getting caught with some weed or hard drugs, they go to jail for years. it's ridiculous

I can agree with this.

Yes, how many innocent lives have to be taken for it to not be excessive?

It should be determined upon BAL, one MHL isn't gonna put you over obviously.

this x 100.

too many ****** idiots that drive and think it's okay to put innocent lives in danger. whether it be texting and driving, driving under the influence, and to a lesser but still serious extent, sleepy while driving.
