John Oliver talks about Student Debt and For-Profit Colleges

Nothing can beat the social life you get at a big university though :pimp:

Why the focus always solely on academics/degrees?

Because kids take out massive loans to pay for college. Getting in 20K+ of debt just to say you had a great social life for 4 years is extremely stupid

The main point of college is the education. Plus you can have social life going to CC.

Take a look at the end of the video, Oliver makes a joke that kids should enjoy the college social life, because they are literally going to be paying for it for the rest of their lives

Love this show and this was a great segment.

Too bad the problem of paying for school won't be fixed anytime soon.

Because it's the sole purpose of going to school

Getting your degree should be your primary purpose in attending school. If you can't have a social life and attend school successfully at the same time then you need to prioritize.

Poeple do focus on academics too much, if they focused more on networking and internships maybe they would actually be employeed after graduation. Gotta have a job to pay off those loans.
People could have decent jobs while going to school.

No doubt but there are also tons of social purposes for attending college that have nothing to do with beer or yambs, some of them just as beneficial as the degree itself in the long run.

Absolutely. People who are only studying and not making connections are often worse off than other who made the effort to develop outside of the classroom.

lots of the hardest partiers from college ended up with consulting positions at Booz and Deloitte

Lol what is considered decent? $8/hr-$10/hr? In my opinion if it isnt gelping you with your career its a waste of time. Unless you need the job to survive of course.

That CUNY/SUNY education :smokin graduated with a $500 balance because they gave me a book advance by accident.

Love his show. So glad he exposed For Profit schools. One of the biggest scams in America....

$17. That''s pretty decent for someone with no bills.

That is pretty good, but lets be honest college kids mainly work retail jobs. I dont know anybody in school and working making that unless its an internship.

I worked for a for profit school right out of school and the stories I could tell you

I hated it; I got out of there ASAP, I lasted about 11 months

It was the 1st job offer I received and was excited to just get working but believe me; they need to be shut down and the government is well on it's way

some "admissions reps" aka scum sales people make 6 figures to pray on people who have no business being in school...that is all I will say; karma will get them when they can't find jobs outside car sales when for profits close
