To Those Who Remember, What was the Sneaker Game like in the early to mid 1990s?

To this....no. Naming those people shows your age, not to pick on you. Why do I say this? Because I wanted the shoes because of the athletes maybe? I was a sports fan as a kid and still am now. Why did I love Barkleys, Jordans, Pippens, etc. I was a basketball fan. Same thing for Bo Jacksons, Barry Sanders etc. That's what drove the interest in shoes for me. This along with wanting their jerseys and posters. It's that simple. I wasn't a game. It wasn't hype. It wasn't 50 colors of one damn shoe. It was love for your favorite athlete and not what you can buy a whole bunch of and resell for 3x the retail price. Couple that with Weiden and Kennedy and you have people wanting a closet full of what they are hocking on tv. It was the golden era of shoes and the sports era created that at the time. It's that simple. As far as the entertainers you mentioned, they were fans too. Why else do you think they wore the shoes?

I doubt there was resell back then, I'm sure people would be like "charging me more? I can go buy that at footlocker right now!"

I remember this sneaker store/sporting goods place where you could try on the shoes and play on their indoor/instore basketball court. I only remember seeing in vegas back thing. Just for feet? The Athlete's Foot?

damn son I was born in 94 and i can tell you the sneaker game was CRAAAZZZZZZZYYYYY back in the 90s.

If you think its crazy today, trust me, it was crazier back then.
Oh yeah?

What do you remember about it?

Paging @illphillip

The ball players. Basketball of course.

And the drug dealers around my way, who always had the fly ****.

What's crazy is people would wear their sneakers out of the story sometime just to get them on the block as soon as possible.

Jordans were popular. Expensive. People were getting robbed for them. But nothing like now in terms of popularity I feel like.

People wore everything. I remember Filas being popular with the dealers. Diadora. Lotto.

It was more about being unique and having your own **** than having the same J's everyone else owns.

THIS. All this.

-picking up kicks for the low in basement spots (nike carnivores in franks for 30, bo jacksons blk/silver 34 in hermans for less than 30 bucks)
Yooo, my man said Hermans b. You def have to be a certain age to remember that.

^^^ from what i recall it was btwn the blk/red & the columbia 11's when cats started getting a little antsy about copping my mans girl worked in NTNY (early) figured i can mosey on in and on both shoes....gone.  at that time my jeans plus connect moved to basics in co-op (didnt know) then came back to jeans plus on tremont....it was on.  wht red 13s were like a month early and i turned heads hooping in them early.

all in all it just wasnt a sneaker "game" you just copped, wore them, clean them and stack up.    fitted hats were on lock too.  Minor lg joints (and army jackets/carhartts) from Franks  before fordham had a million hat stores
I wonder who she was. I probably knew her

. And no, it got out of hand before that. The retro XI's came out in Decemer '01. We got so many in, they sent a list around the store asking people what their size was and EVERYONE got a guaranteed pair. Even with that, there were still extra pairs AFTER RD in the store. You literally had a GREAT shot of at least 2 pairs. If you didn't come off with 2, either you didn't try or didn't like them. That was a fact. As far as getting antsy about copping. It wasn't like that with every shoe, but in 2001 it was with any an all XI retros. The spring of 2001 had the red and blue jordan XI low. The line was wrapped around the building and I remember coming to work that morning, people in line were giving me the mean mug like I had the shoes in my pocket or something. It was nuts. There were at least 3 robberies around the store that day.

Why else do you think they wore the shoes?

some of it may have been product placement
i think of Full House
Could be, but I don't think so. Them wearing it on tv was just a byproduct of the times and sports being so popular. Nike didn't need them to co-sign a shoe. The commercials had them covered.

Def was no resell back then, at least not like what we see now.

I remember wearing kicks right out of the store. Straight flexing coming back and showing my friends.

.

Avia's...shout out to Clyde Drexler.

The Avia 822 was the one I liked the most.

Drexler always balled in lows right? So he wore the 825?

Thank you sir.

Anyone remember this sneaker? I posted it in the Sneaker Showcase Reebok thread.

The Reebok Integrity.

View media item 1173699View media item 1173700That whole blue piece on the side is plastic and is meant for support. It's attached to the strap that locked everything together.

I remember getting these to play AAU ball thinking I was doing it. ***** felt like they weighed 10lbs each.

My ankle was rock solid though

The Commitment was another nice one from Reebok.

I was actually thinking that Reebok could retro that **** now and it wouldn't be that far off from some of the **** I see cats rocking today.

Those are ill. I would love to see them re-release.

I'd also like to see the Reeboks answer to Nikes "Glove", the "Shroud", make a return.

Drools at the Transports.....

Them 855s I think is what he wore in the 90 finals. Them Avia arc spiders (I think) were dope for the time. But no matter how many times I try to catch them from the 89 contest., I can't see what number avias Clyde is wearing

Can't forget the numerous pairs if new balance I had back then....a Bronx / uptown staple

So I've been looking for images of the following two adidas for literally years and finally found then on eBay. One seller has a whole bunch of vintage heat but none of it is my size. The first pair is the Tre mid from 1995. It's probably my favorite 90s adidas Bball shoe and I really wish they'd retro. Had a pair if black/white ones but never managed to grab this black and green colorway. Second pair is the Backdoor mid, I think also 95 and I had this shoe in this exact color. Also wanted the white pair cause the piece going up the middle of the toebocpx was black to contrast and add another dimension to the 3 stripes going up the side. The Rafters were just a sick looking Reebok Bball shoe from around 95. I think the ones in the pic are actually a retro from like 2003. They never got the shape right on the retros and it always irritated me. I think I have a pic of the black Nubuck OGs, I'll post it underneath the white/red pair from the auction.

Celebrities didn't influence me wanting shoes in the 90s.. Michael Jordan influenced me wanting shoes in the 90s..

I always liked those Sam Cassells. Never had the heart to pull the trigger though.

Yeah, those have to be retros. I wasn't even aware they ever re-released.

I cut the Reebok logos off the OG version of that colorway and used them as a keychain after the shoes were trashed. The Originals had a white leather oval instead of red one, and a translucent red rubber Reebok logo in place of the black stitched one. I think that colorway came out in like 97, a good while after all the others.

Ya, no resellers back then. Heck, you could wait a couple months and even get them on clearance! I know we'll never have numbers, but I wonder if they made more back then, or if it's just the hype now.

I remember going to Mall of America in '97 and seeing a store with a court inside. Didn't realize it was for actually trying out the shoes. Seems like such a strange concept now with sellouts and reviews all over Youtube.

That was back when the Air Bakin & Foams just came out! I remember thinking $180 was a CRAZY amount to spend on shoes when all the other high end stuff was only around $140. I think even the Jordan XII's were around $135 then if I'm not mistaken. Then the XIII came out with a $150 price tag and the hologram on the side

We are looking in Rockridge right now. If u know anyone hiring, that would also help

Been interviewing like crazy.
Of course I'm biased, and I've never lived there, but if living in a nice to super nice area is important to you, all things considered Rockridge is about as close to perfect as you can get in America.

I remember setting foot in this place back in 93 or 94. Think it opened in 90. Place was like a museum with athlete posters of kicks and sportswear everywhere that drew you in with knowledge on what they were trying to achieve, especially on an athletic standpoint. This corner will always stay dear to me. Use to ride 2 buses and the light rail to this spot. IMO this is the hub of the shoe game and the ability of extending brands/marketing it out to the mainstream crowd

When I bought the Taxis at Athletes Foot they had what looked like a small pen mark on the white part

They were beginning me to buy them and even took off $50

I washed the mark off too with a rag and hot water

When I was about 7, Mom and Dad got me my first pair of Jordan's back in '85: black/red Sky Jordan 1's. I also remember getting the satin jacket with the wings logo on the back... It was around this time when Run DMC was pretty popular and I had a bunch of ADIDAS gear too... I'd always get my shoes from Hilltop Mall in Richmond (back when it was a decent mall). I would always go into Footlocker (who remembers their old store layout with the hoop above the register and the hardwood floor) to look at the grown up Jordan's that I couldn't quite fit yet. When the IV's came out, my interest went up, I was about 10-11 at this point. I got the kids version of what I called the Concrete IV's (White/Cement), and about a year later they still had them at Footlocker, and got the grown up version of the Black/Red IV's... In the 90's, I also got shoes from Track and Trail, The Athletes Foot, and Copelands... I can honestly say that I've owned a pair of British Knights that I got from this store that I can't remember the name of, but I guess it was cool back then... As for J's, I got the Fire Red V's and loved the reflective tongue, but hated that it never sat straight (I think my pair was messed up, my older brothers pair looked better)... My last pair of Jordan's were the Infrared VI's, this was around the time I first started playing organized ball, then I kinda cooled off on J's for a bit...

As like most have already stated, influences came straight from the athletes, and back then the athlete was greater than the celebrity wearing his shoe... The NBA All-Star game was a great example of when players showcased their new shoes and I always watched with my brothers & friends... It was always fun talking about what players were wearing and waiting for the newest Eastbay to come in the mail... During this time in the early to mid 90's, I was a big fan of the Flights and Forces... Shoes you could pump up were kinda cool back then too, I had a pair of Reebok Pump Omni Lite's and I found a pair of the Air Command Force's at Copelands on the sale table... I've been a huge Warriors fan for like forever, and Tim Hardaway was one of my favorite players along with Mullin, so of course I had to get the Air Raids... I never really messed with Air Max's much, and I think my first pair was the CB34's...

When the internet started becoming a resource for information and Jordan started bringing back the XI's, that's when I got interested in Jordan's again... I missed out but didn't really try to get the Concord's, but when the Space Jams dropped, getting them at midnight on NDC was easy, I think I bought 4 or 5 pairs for friends and family, same thing when the White/Cement III's came back... I would always freequent Niketalk and Kicksology (such a dope site, I found their reviews to be helpfull for selecting a shoe to play ball in)... I was spending a lot of my part time paychecks at NTSF and First Step... I guess at this point demand was getting higher for shoes and things eventually escalated to where we're at today...

Back then, shoes were meant to play ball in, and it was about comfort and performance... Stores pretty much had shoes on the shelves, and I remember walking past all the early Jordan retro's that sat at Copelands on Market St. in SF, they must've been there for months...I remember walking into NTSF on a Saturday night on release day to pick up some Black Cement III's and wearing them to play hoop in the same night (terrible traction, went straight into my closet)... Like it was back then, I buy the ones I want and don't need to buy every pair that releases in every color...

All the new generation is, is a bunch of kids that worry about what other people think, worrying about fake pairs, being impatient and blabbering about order/shipping confirmations, striving to have the most pairs/biggest collection, and doing photo shoots of their feet (that was for our Civics and Integras back in the day)... Grab a ball and play some hoops

...another pair i had from the foot hunt that i wish i never threw out.  i actually liked the "bag/box" more than the shoe.  trying to really think how i got these, probably some mom/pop in harlem not some wild re-sale price.  and i had these in h.s. so they had to be some years old.  never really rocked them (too bulky in the back) and i remember them being not so comfortable esp at the tip of the toe box.....sold them for like 50 bucks, hurt to let go of the box
