Is another Cold War with Russia inevitable?

Do you understand military tactics? Our hands were tied. We barely used 1/4 of our Air Force or other technical items that makes us superior. Given no red tape or us having to hold back, we can turn the Middle East into an empty parking lot within 48hrs.

For every 1 jet Russia has, we have fifty. For every 1 tank they have, we have thirty. You win wars against the U.S. via the news and international perceptions. Why do you think both the Taliban and the North Vietnamese use guerilla tactics and hide amongst the public and used them as human shields? The minute CNN shows the dismembered leg of some child that was mistakenly caught in a drone strike, the American public gets a conscience and calls the Military monsters and we have to hold off. We are then relegated to fighting the war on their term. Why do you think that Cleric in the UK can openly say that the U.S. and the West are criminals and that we deserve to die? We have to live by this higher moral obligation and our enemies know that. They can capture, torture, rape, and murder our troops; but the minute you interrogate an enemy combatant, we are called monsters. Did some of it go too far? Yes, it did. But when you have people who have information and they aren’t afraid or scared of spending the rest of their lives in a black hole to protect the cause, you have to have leverage. This isn’t Call of Duty, war and warfare is extremely ugly. Leaders have to knowingly make calls and decisions where they know that their orders will cause some of their men and women to either get harms or die. It is part of the job, and most if not all of the service members who go to warzones know this. The American public has this false pretense of what war and warfare really entails.

I don’t think you guys underestimate what the US military is fully capable of. We have learned from WW1 and WW2. We will overwhelm you. Why do you think we have bases all over the world? Why do you think we are so heavy in Europe and Asia? Why do you think the Navy is refocusing manpower in Asia and Southwest Asia!

Speak on what you know, don’t assume.
Everything i wanted to say but being active duty my mouth must stay shut. Thank you.

HUGE difference between conventional warfare vs whatever you wanna call the 'war on terror'
This, thankfully we haven't really had to deal with the former recently. Fighting total war against other nations with standing armed forces =/= fighting against armed guerrilla groups.

Russia doesn't have nearly the amount of power they had in the 1950s - 1970s. Not even just from a military standpoint, but financially. Also, they would not have many allies in going to war with us. It would be an extremely short-lived blip in the time frame of history. If the U.S. wanted to, they could cripple Russia quickly with sanctions. Another factor that wouldn't be good for Russia is that their weaponry no longer matches up with ours, yes they have nuclear weapons, but a great deal of their military advances were brokered off, and/or destroyed at the end of the Cold War.

Also for those who say well the U.S. couldn't handle Al-Qaeda. Russia had a lot of trouble in Afghanistan in the 1980s and essentially just picked up their **** and left when they realized they couldn't win. As someone also pointed out, a war with Russia would be much more different than in the Middle East. Significantly different theater that doesn't hurt the U.S.

Russia is basically North Korea with more influence. Not to say that Russia couldn't beat most armed forces in the world. But they are like North Korea in that they are agitators. They push buttons because it's not worth any country to go to war with them (U.S. in this instance). But if the U.S. declared war, the tone would change very quickly

The difference between conventional and guerrilla has several differences:

Guerrilla:
-no structural bases to bomb
-blend in with populous.
-Fight amongst civilian population
-unconventional tactics such as IEDs, boobie-traps, cave systems, underground supply lines, citizen soldiers, sometimes no central command, immoral strategies, etc.
-going against the Geneva contention.

Conventional army:
-Central command
-Industrial
-use conventional weapons
-establish battle lines/fronts and using modern/traditional military tactics.
-following most Geneva guidelines as at as battling.
-Air Force/Naval entities.
-multiple structured hierarchy within groups of soldiers based on numbers/size.

Can you and has a Guerilla army ever been defeated?

After World War II in Greece
Irish Civil War 1922-1923
Bolivia led by Che

Some of many notable examples.

Many reasons why it fails: You overestimate advantages. The force in power is too strong. You are trying to remove a popular regime. You cannot beat them quickly enough. You do not have enough manpower, supplies. Not getting enough support from other countries (Greece when Yugoslavia closed their border and stopped helping an overthrow).

It's all in the tactics. If you don't have a quick and decisive plan that works, you will have trouble. It requires quick strikes like bobbing and weaving. If you don't stick to that plan and end up fighting a conventional war, you will lose.

Man, we don't want it with them.

US/Europe/Japan/China (Yes China because even tho their is some tension, we are both vastly dependent on each other economically) vs Russia/North Korea

Good luck with Russia having any electricity for for the next 30 years after that hypothetical war is over. No need to worry, live your life.

Plus They don't have the balllls.

You guys are out of your mind then. Maybe it's the movies

They'd never side with Russia against the US and all our allies. If anything they'd remain neutral, at best if Russia got lucky.

Ya'll dudes need to take a trip a Russia, if you did. You'd probably understand and this "threat/fear" of World War III would never enter your brain again. I'm going to keep saying it, "Don't Worry About It"

I don't think war is going to happen between Russia and U.S. But China has been getting very close with Russia in recent years. While at the same time moving away from the U.S.

What about Russia and Chinas nukes?

It took us 10 years to fight an amateur army in Al-Queda, and wasn't even really successful.....how would we fare against mega powers?

They could wipe us off the map just like we could to them.
this is the same militia that drove the Soviet Union into depression ... Learn your history fool.

exactly...and lets not forget Russia was and is still having a hard time dealing with their own insurgencies in the North Caucasus, which has been ongoing for many decades at least

PUTIN PUTS FAR EASTERN MILITARY DIVISON ON WAR-FOOTING, ORDERS SURPRISE DRILL INVOLVING OVER 100,000 SERVICEMEN -- ITAR-TASS

No.

It's either actual war or nothing.

The U.S. already won the cold war. There'd need to be another game changing world war to set the stage for another cold war.

huh. Militaries are always in a cold war. ISIS seems to be the issue though.

Ww4 will be stocks and stones.

Why should we be afraid of this? They flew over our airspace with a TU-95 and we're supposed to feel threatened? By 60 year old technology?

Most of what Putin is doing is to show his bark towards Obama. Since Obama ran on ending Bush's unilateral wars and becoming more of a pacifist on the world stage, he's reexerting the old Soviet Union tactics he grew up in during his time at the KGB.

Let's put our military power in perspective. Here's aircraft carriers in our navy compared to the rest of the world:

Now, our air force also utilizes stealth fighters, bombers, & drones. Russia is still operating with Soviet era aircraft after their collapse 20 years ago.
