According to the Daily Dot, nearly 5 million usernames and passwords to Gmail accounts have been leaked on a Russian Bitcoin forum. Here's what you should know.

The list has since been taken down, and there's no evidence that Gmail itself was hacked—just that these passwords have been leaked. Most sources are saying that lots of the information is quite old, so chances are they were leaked long ago—though others are claiming 60% of the passwords are still valid (not to mention really, really horrible).

If you're paranoid, you may also want to change your password at this time. As always, make sure you use a strong password and enable two-factor authentication on your account.


Update 2: We still aren't sure how these passwords were leaked or when—but some folks over on Reddit discovered that these may not, in fact, be Gmail passwords, but passwords leaked from other web sites over the years that were associated with Gmail addresses. And, as we know, many people used the same password for multiple accounts—which is why some of you may find that your old Gmail password was leaked (while others are seeing passwords not from Gmail).

We still don't know the full details, but the lesson remains the same: stay safe out there!

This other tool I found out my adobe account has been breached :smh:. I contacted adobe today and I couldn't get them do delete it since I no longer have access to the email addy associated with the account and what a surprise my details I gave them in the chat do not match the adobe id account details. :x Thus compromised, but they keep telling me my account was not one of the breached accounts. Yeah like I believe that :smh:

the leak didn't come from google though so they won't take any action. Just a compiled list of PWs over the years that were associated with gmail due to people using the same PW for everything.

Use the other tool to check for other accounts. That's how I found out about my adobe account.

Glad I deleted my Google account in July. Google is bad, bad news.

I'm now using an ad-free, non-tracked email provider. I can encrypt anything I like. Much better than Gmail.
