This is ******* CRAZY. I read this the other day and couldn't believe it. I don't know if this speaks more to the rapidly rising housing costs in the DMV, or if Alford, is indeed, insane.

And you think your drive to work is bad?

A Virginia man commutes 220 miles -- or about seven hours -- each day, all in the name of family.

Thurmond Alford began working what he calls his "dream job" in Washington, D.C., about 12 years ago. The problem? Everyone he loves is in Richmond, Virginia.

So he chose to have the best of both worlds. But at a cost.

"Every two weeks I was changing oil." Alford told CBS News. "The guy at Jiffy Lube ... He knew my first name. He knew my football team."

His commute begins at 4 a.m. each day.

First, Alford drives from Richmond to Fredericksburg, Virginia. Then he grabs a ride with a friend to Arlington before taking not one, but two trains into downtown Washington.

He's a moron. From Fairfax to DC is hard enough with all the traffic and BS. He could also get a place for cheap in Woodbridge or Stafford even.

I mean, how much does it suck to get home late and have to do the same **** all over again after 6-7 hours of sleep? WHere's your quality of life? Like you said...he could probably havea nice place MUCH closer to DC for a price that's comparable to his home in Richmond.

Tom foolery, Nothern Virginia traffic ain't no joke.

That's terrible.

My commute sucks to DC itself though. I wake up around 4, my bus leaves at 5, get to DC around 6 even though I don't officially start work until 7. Then it I get off work at 4 and don't come back home until 5:45 in the afternoon.

Lets see how he feels if they ever fire his ***.

and it's only getting worse. Funny thing about commuting, is leaving 15 minutes earlier or later can totally make/break your drive to work/home.

Damn! That's rough!

I commute an hour each way...but that includes making a stop at daycare.

So true. I commute from downtown bmore to baltimore co. If I leave between 4:30 and 4:45 I get home by 5:15. If I'm still at work between 4:45 and 5:00, I just stay until 5:30 because I will get home the same time with less traffic and aggravation :smh:

Right. And you know anytime a new person comes on board, that is the go to story. I get what he is doing but I just couldn't put myself through all of that. What about his cars? How does he keep them maintained properly when he is traveling 5 days a week? When I started driving my wife to school and work last year, I couldn't get my car to my mechanic for routine maintenance. I just didn't have the time and I was driving to school and work for both of us mon-sat. I had to take it to a shlell station on Sunday for an oil change. Thank goodness nothing serious happened during that time, because we were really dependent on the car.

i read this a few weeks ago and i don't understand why he doesn't catch the train from Fredericksburg or Quantico/Dumfries into DC

This man doesn't value his time.

I wish I could rep you more.

With all of that unpaid time he's giving to his dream job commuting, he could probably come up with his own business idea and find a way to fund it. :smh:

So if he spends 7 hours a day driving, at least 8 hours a day working and let's say 6-8 hours a night sleeping, he might as well just sleep at work or rent a spot closer to work during the week because the cost has to be about the same with gas, insurance and maintenance of his vehicle/transit costs. Not like he's spending those weekdays with his family anyway.

The money isn't worth it, just rent a spot close to the job and drive home on Friday nights and spend the wknd with your family. LIke someone said there is no way he is spending any quality time with them on weekdays, and there is no way in hell he is jovial when he gets home.

He has to be on level 10 when he walks through the door, and he isn't trying to hear **** from anyone

i would do this commute if i was getting a 120k salary

The traffic isn't the main issue, more so the distance of his commute. Richmond to DC is damn near the same as driving from Philly to DC. This dude better start working for home, work out schedule where he comes in the offic elike twice a week, or just move.

I understand wanting to be close to family and friends, but how much time does he actually get to spend with them this way? Move an hour closer to the city at least. I'm sure that people would still visit you.

On top of it all, there isn't a person in America working an 8 hour day anymore. 7 hours commuting + 9 hour workday = 16 hours spent ON the job...and 7 of those hours are obviously while you're NOT on the clock. This guy is an idiot. I'm sure he's making somewhere around 150K, but that **** ain't worth it. Losing YEARS off his life due to spending it in transit. What kind of sense is that? :smh:

His route is insanely stupid. He would actually make it faster just riding straight into the city, or park and ride from woodbridge or something. The hell wrong with this dude? I do however know someone who does this to Arlington every day, no way.
