Let's talk racism in sports journalism: Rice, Peterson, Hardy, Dwyer, McWhatever, & Winston in NCAA

I mean, it is his second offense. And he was driving twice the legal limit. But aight, I guess he gets a pass because the Olympics is only every 4 years. Even though I'm sure he competes more than just during the Olympics.

What else does he compete in that people actually care about? Not being snarky, but seriously....if you think people honestly care about what he does (sporting-wise) outside of the Olympic games, then you're kidding yourself.

The sport that Michael Phelps plays is certainly a blip on the radar, but if you don't recognize that the name/brand 'Michael Phelps' is a household name, then you are either living under a rock or intentionally keeping your head in the sand.

I have every belief that if a prominent minority American figure from a not-so-prominent American sport were busted for weed... say Tim Howard... it would DOMINATE sports headlines, and not just the same day, but for a couple weeks following. This Phelps story will be dead by the weekend.

I'm sure Lance Armstrong did more than just the Tour de France, but I can't name a single other bike race. Lance Armstrong mattered during the Tour de France and that was it, just like Michael Phelps matters during the Olympics.

Have Tom Brady or Peyton Manning get pulled over for a DUI and then we can talk.

I think it's more prudent to talk about the flag Chiefs safety Husain Abdullah got... How come Tebow never got flagged? :smh:

Who cares about a DB pot smoking swimmer...

My point is this... when Aldon Smith got his dui, there was definitely media outrage. Michael Phelps is way more famous than just your average Olympian.
I'm not for media being extra involved in athletes personal lives, but since that seems to be the angle they are taking, I want them to be consistent.

They seem to be getting in the lives of NFL players, not necessarily all athletes. As I said it is the lead story on yahoo right now

Well, think about the summer Tim Howard had. Of course it would matter.

Phelps, right now, who cares? His pot bust a few years back was a HUGE deal...and this was before social media jumped off.

Agreed.

Now this I can get behind, but that's because the overzealous Christian agenda this country has.

It should be noted however both the Qur'an & Bible kinda discourage (for lack of a better term) prayers in public because it's looked upon as hypocritical & too showy... Does anyone know if he was at least facing East?

Exactly. .. it's not about which sport he is involved with, but his name. This is one of the most famous athletes in the world. Regardless if he may only compete every 4 years.

If it ain't a major sport it won't catch much traction with the public attention

Athletes getting DUIs don't even stay in the news like that. Greg Monroe pissed his pants and I don't think it was ever reported on sportscenter. It'll take one killing somebody in a car accident before the outrage cranks up

The Bell/Blount story gained very little traction so I'm not so sure Ska...

I'm still surprised punishment wasn't doled out by at least the team. I guess the league is waiting on due process. I know first hand for the team here in Baltimore & the NBA team in DC pot smoking is HUUUUUUUUGE. I'd like to know how these players are getting around the testing...

I think the flag last night is a lot simpler of an explanation in all honesty. Not saying the statement doesn't have merit on its own but I don't think incompetent NFL officials are related in any way to it

And people keep saying Tebow wasn't flagged, dude hasn't scored since 2011. Rules have changed since then

The TD celebration rule has been in place since 2006. The league is simply choosing to be more strict in it's enforcement. I think Godell called it a clarification of rules when he sent the officials to all the camps last year.

Ah, so initial rule there but more emphasis. Still doesn't surprise me they flagged and I sit see it being a bias call. They've been flagging nearly every 'celebration' or movement in the end zone it seems

Yeah, Godell sent out his storm troopers to the camps when he got sick of seeing the goal post slam dunks to remind folks you can't use the ball as a prop in celebrations as well as all the other specifics.

Abdullah got flagged for sliding on his knees into prayer. The sliding is prohibited also which should've seen Teebow flagged every time. I guess Teebow isn't enough of a Biblical scholar to have read Matthew 6:5... :smh:
