2015 NEW YORK YANKEES OFFSEASON THREAD VOL. Baseball is in the air

I'm not a fan of McCann at all..but I think his bat has improved towards the end of the season

Offensive numbers aside, do you think that McCann had an impact on the pitching staff this year? Kinda like they always credit Yadier and Posey for Cards and Giants' pitching success.

I thought he was great working with the staff.

Calls a good game and a + framer

Don't know if this is the numbers he ended up with but it was At least 8HRs 18RBIs in September.

he def started heating up at the end..

I forgot he's a great catcher..tanaka only worked with him exclusively..and any other catcher working with kuroda had trouble catching the movement on his sliders and curveballs

I was always frustrated with his fly outs with RISP..def a threat at the plate..a few walk offs this yr he had

He just needs to be more patient at the plate and try to work the counts. That was one of the three things that hurt him (along with hitting in a new league, and more shifts).

He was swinging at more pitches out of the zone, as well as in the zone, despite pitchers not pitching him any different than they did 3 years ago.

If you just figure if he was more patient, had been in the AL before so he would have a better history against all pitchers, and didn't see the shift as often. Could have cost him 15 hits and 10 walks. Instead of .232/.286 he would have been .263 / .326 probably would also have more RBIs.

Even in a terrible year, he still gave us 2nd most HRs by a Catcher, 3rd most RBIs. But he certainly could be much better at the plate, and provide more production. He's even shown that throughout his career.

it's black and white, this team as constructed this year- was an embarrassment to the New York Yankees. You can not trot out that same team, same pitching staff and expect a different result.

Changing the 1B coach and hitting coach is not going to change anything. But the Yankees are too scared to fire Cashman or Girardi so they had to make others the fall guy when in reality it should have been Girardi and Cashman as the 1st ones to go.

Now they are stuck with massive problems and holes to fill - all while trying to stick to the notion of not spending above 189 mil.

Team has really become a joke.

Look at the Royals (can't believe we'd ever say that) but this is a team that trusted it's scounts and gave their young kids chances...now those young kids got enough experience and it all clicked.

The Yankees don't seem to EVER have this type of mentality. And that's why they have a team full of old men and most of all losers.

I don't think this year was Girardi's fault (exception of Jeter batting 2nd, but I blame the fans for making it that you had to deflect Jeter from blame) nor Cashman who made great deals to keep us in it as long as possible.

It was the injuries. A rotating year of injury. Just like 2013.

Part of the reason we couldn't be the Royals is that our scouts stink. So there was no reason to trust them. So many guys in the past decade have flamed out because they start off well, but by the time they get to the majors couldn't hit .230 if they wanted to.

The old guys thing applies to 4 guys (A-Rod, Teixeira, Beltran, CC) .

Teix is not completely useless, he still is good in the field, and will still hit the ball out at an above average rate, he's just no longer a #4 hitter, and is injury prone.

We made the mistake giving A-Rod a 10 year extension in 2007. He deserved the extension, but 10 years to a 31 year old was ridiculous. Just stupid. We should have just went 7 year at $30mil a year which would have made sense for us, protected us, and still gave A-Rod his money, and we'd be done with him today. Or if he stayed healthy and was on the cusp of 763, we could give him another year.

CC we extended, and he wasn't even going to leave NY. Would have 1 years left and maybe a vesting option, instead have 3. He was a work horse and it just deteriorated him.

Beltran was just a bad move because of his age. We should have tried to keep Cano instead, I know the 10 years was a big thing to him, but no reason we couldn't have gone 7 years and closed the gap to maybe 3 year - $30mil total instead of 3 year - $70mil total. That would have at least been something where leaving New York made even less sense.

Those 4 guys are $82million - 45% of our total payroll on the books (not including Arbitration guys).

Another problem is none of our guys are even ready to make the jump to the majors.. Not Lindgren, Not Williams, Not Austin, Not Heathcott, Not Refsnyder, Not Severino, Not Judge, Not Jagielo, Not Bird, Not Cave, Not Sanchez.

When you have a fan base that is WIN NOW, and is always WIN NOW. You can't afford the luxury to have everyday players just come up and spend a season or two trying to figure it out. You either have to be ready, or you won't get much playing time.

I guess on the bright side we have some things going for us:
McCann, Ellsbury & Gardner even if McCann slumped, he was up there with the best catchers in HRs & RBIs and is solid with the staff. Jacoby & Brett give us a dynamic nobody has. Great fielders, great basestealers, and have decent pop.
Tanaka, Pineda are young. Both look like studs. Assume they can stay healthy, if we could get a #1 in here, that 1-3 is tough to beat.
Royals should show the Yankees how important a lock down bullpen is, and to keep D-Rob for multiple years.... Warren, Betances & Robertson is up there with Herrera, Davis & Holland. Isn't as good, but it's # 2. When Lindgren is ready come September to get his feet wet, then we'll have 3 guys who can strike out anybody, and Warren who can give you 2 solid innings.

Being the Royals is just not feasible. We should rely more on the minors, I agree. But our minors stink, our fanbase is wishy-washy and are win now, and if you don't look like you will win, they won't come support (When we're winning Yankee Stadium is one of the best ballparks). Unless people can wait 5 years to try and have a resurgence of the minors, and start from scratch, then we can never become like the Royals, or Rays, etc.

Alfonso Soriano was the absolute worst..

Ellsbury will be fire next yr now that he is back at lead off (where he shines)

Im not a big fan of Girardi's coaching style..puts too much confidence in his players..u barely see any sacrifice bunts or really putting pressure on opposing teams pitching and defense..they need to play more small ball..I wish Pena was the head coach...lololol

edit - also there third base coach is terrible get him out of here..he would do the complete opposite of what the runners are supposed to do

Gardy was way too conservative on the bases..he's faster than ells..he should just run..who cares if u get caught

BTW ARod will b good at first..headley is too awesome to let go..but what are they gonna do with Tex

end semi rant..this season was heartbreaking lolllll

Yankee Stadium isn't a small ball park. And we never have a lineup of bunters. I would never bunt with Ellsbury, I'd never bunt with Gardner. Why? Because you are wasting their at-bats. Unless you see the defense playing too far back, it is always better to just let guys who can hit... hit.

Pinstripe Alley disagrees with the we don't bunt enough.

We're a doubles and homeruns team. That's what our stadium created. We'll never beat teams with bunt, singles, and sacflies. See 2013 & 2014 Yankees.

I want Willie Randolph back on the bases.

Gardner's apprehension is why Ellsbury is a much better base stealer, and rarely gets caught. Ellsbury knows his speed, knows the pitcher, and knows instantly if he can get the base. Gardner needs to see a few pitches, which by that time you end up missing your opportunity. He'd best be followed by someone who works the counts and sees a lot of pitches.

God please just let us get rid of A-Rod.

u kind of missed the point of what i posted..

i was speaking of moving the base runners..also i wasnt referring to ellsbury and gardner bunting...i was speaking of when it was necessary (as a team)..of course ellsbury would never bunt..but gardy?? he was a little streaky for a little while and then kind of lost it at the end of the season.for a while he was a tough out..then he became sort of an easy out..lol..again girardi needs to play a more old-school style of baseball like the rest of the successful teams..tony pena is an old school guy

dont get me wrong i like gardy..hes a grinder/workhorse..but wasnt that consistent

and i was not comparing gardner to ells' base stealing..i said he was faster and needs to be more agressive..not so conservative..he did not have a lot of attempts this year..basically a waste..i dont care how careful u wanna be..utilize your speed ..no one is as good a base stealer than ells..gardy will never get to his level overall

No I got your point.

I was basically saying Gardy & Ells who are the two most likely candidates to bunt who could handle bunting, shouldn't. And you wouldn't bunt with McCann, Teix, Beltran, A-Rod.

There was plenty of times Girardi was bunting with no outs runner on 1st or runner on 2nd. To either get the guy in scoring position, or try to set up a Sac Fly. Most times came back to lead to nothing (I went back and searched my timeline to see how often our bunting was a waste of an out and didn't produce a run. Maybe 3 out of 4 times). Certain teams go old school style because they HAVE to. Becoming or even relying more on it, playing at Yankee Stadium is a waste of an out. We've been a team that hits homeruns, that's how we've been successful. It isn't a coincidence that the past 2 years where we could barely hit the ball out, is when we miss the playoffs. Not saying we should never bunt. If you think you could fool the defense and move the runner and decent chance of making it to first. Then absolutely do it. But unless it's the pitcher in an NL stadium, very little reason to do so under normal circumstances.

Small ball without bunting is fine. Because you're going up to get a hit, not just sacrifice yourself and waste outs. But if you have a hitter's park, you should utilize it because the away team will.

I was more so contrasting the styles of Ellsbury & Gardner. But you're right Gardner basically does waste his speed. I wish he would be aggressive too.

if there are no outs or 1 out..man on first..do whatever to get the guy on first in scoring position..they must have left a million runners stranded on base going nowhere..

jesus christ :smh:

it's never gonna work

Cashman was so close to the greatest day of his life. Instead he likely polished off 2 more bottles of Jack Daniels.

Curious how Long will fare in Queens. Who are we eyeing for his replacement?

On November 4th, 30 for 30 will be showing "Brothers in Exile" about Livan Hernandez and everyone's favorite Yankee El Duque.

God I love El Duque

According to CBS Sports the Yankees are focused on resigning 3B Chase Headley :smokin

@Essential1  I know you've gone on record saying you wouldn't mind Nelson Cruz at 2 years around $40M. Now Jon Heyman is saying Cruz wants a 4 year deal at "big bucks". Assuming a deal is between $64M-$100M would you still be in on Cruz?
