Another tipping thread.

Tipping is a glitch in american society. That being said, i've been a server for 5 years feeding off the glitch, but I HATE the traditional american style of tipping. We are the ONLY country that operates restauraunts like this. I feel like servers should get paid more, and if they don't do a good job, they get fired. Even when someone does give bad service, most patrons( clearly excluding a lot of nters) are going to leave a decent tip anyway. I know I am, because when I ineveitably dine at the restauraunt next time I don't want to worry about salty anguished people handling my food, which therein lies the problem of the vicious cycle. I'm always surprised when I hear people say they don't tip - on account of in all my years of waiting tables I have NEVER gotten stiffed. Not even once. Closest thing was when someone forgot to leave a tip- and they called my employer later that night to right their wrong. Granted- i'm good at what I do and have never given anyone reason to stiff me. But what I see happening nowadays is this, in the past the norm for tipping was 15% (that's what I always saw my dad do anyway). A younger me saw people actually grinding their butts off for that 15%. Now- servers just feel entitled to 20%, no matter what. If a customer leaves less than that, they are just simply aholes to the servers I see now. I have these female servers (mostly, but some guys too), all day, just talk about how they've been shorted by the jerk customers and whatnot- they NEVER stop and think hey maybe I actually didn't do a good job. It drives me insane, the lack of accountability, it's like, used to people would go to a restauraunt, and from start to finish servers would try to give them the best experience possible. Now it just seems like when a server is sat, they are just thinking about the total bill, how fast they can get them in and out of their seats, and how they can suck every last potential penny out of said patron. It's sick, on top of that, waiting tables is SOOOOO EASSSSSYYYYYY. People will be quick to tell you otherwise, but they just suck. With the slightest bit of multitasking and people skills, the job is freaking cake man. It is NOTHING. You take orders and fill drinks and roll silverware whoopdeefreakingdoo . To wrap up my rant, which I apologize for, this is just a topic I feel very strongly about, the whole system is just rigged to make it easier on the business owners. They get away with paying their ENTIRE serving staff less than FOUR dollars an hour, and the customers, the people that are supposed to be the ones getting the dining experience actually PAY another persons employees, more than TWICE what the employee's boss is actually paying them. How much sense does that make? It's really the fat cat business owners that profit the most out of the system.  OH AND ANOTHER THING. This coming from a waiter- THE COOKS ARE THE ONES THAT DESERVE A TIP. Their job is soooooooooooooooooo much more difficult than serving , and yes I'm aware that they know what they signed up for when they took the job, doesn't make it less unjust. I believe the that 5 aforementioned restauraunts are totally in the right. The tipping system in the states is just so foul. On top of that, there is tip jars everywhere now. Even in the drive thru of a smoothie king. Like yeah lets just buy a 10 dollar smoothie then leave an extra dollar for the person that made it, like they're not already getting paid to do so. Im not knocking the hustle of the individual smoothie servant im just saying the system in the states is deplorable as a whole and continuing  to become more ridiculous. It's just despicable fambs. yes im mad. endrant

oh yeah not quite. I totally forgot about the OP. You need to report her man. it would take every ounce of self control I had not to bring the receipt back right to her face and confront her about it

I feel like waiters should just get a better wage would solve most of the problems. don't some places add a gratuity fee also so the tip is already added in the bill? I thought some places do that

Adding 20% isn't too bad depending on the restaurant. Many places I go to already do that and I'll still leave a tip. I have no problem leaving 50+ when the service is above and beyond.


Some people are good at what they do. I've been to places where I have no clue what to eat and the waiter will just ask what do I like. I'll give them a few things I eat and next thing you know Ill have something great and not even on the menu.

Funny thing with tipping is the location. I've lived in nyc for 25 years and just recently moved to Pa. I realized out here people are cheap. I'll leave a $20 tip and it's like a big deal.

Yea well it use to be called Ryans steak house , I think it is just Ryans now. But its a all you can eat buffet like Golden Correl.   But they serve steaks right off the grill there as well and it was good. They ownor under same corp, Old Country Buffet,Fire mountain and a few others

I had a buy one meal get the other free coupon.  and bought a sprite and water. Total was $14 and some change. 1 year old was free

Well then that server is even crazier than we all thought. She should have definitely been reported. Do you know how easy it is to be a buffet server? What the hell does a buffet server even do? Anything? ANything at all? Get your drink order and say "enjoy your meal?" Do they even bring the check and process it?

Seriously, what a dumb worthless waitress. That's probably why she's serving at a buffet anyway. Because her attitude is poor, and she doesn't have the experience to serve in a nice restaurant.

That being said, I think the 15% tip you left is PLENTY. Even I wouldn't leave more than that for a buffet server. I wouldn't be suprised if they get tipped 10% or less all day long. Especially that one you had with the poor attitude. She's probably lagging on the refills all shift because she's too busy complaining about her crappy tips as a buffet server. If she wants better money, she needs to improve her attitude and work ethic. Then, work your way up to Denny's, THEN apply at a nicer spot. But she'll never make it anyway.

I Def treat a buffet differently... Usually leave like 3 bucks no matter the bill... Then again, I only go to Chinese buffet... If it was a high end steak and lobster joint I'd treat it differently than a Chinese buffet...

I serve tables in Los Angeles. It doesn't get any more diverse than this.

I served 22 tables last night. I got 2 10 percent tips. One was 11 on 115, and the other was 8 on 75. I served two young black couples on two different tables. Both tipped 20% (and one couple emailed a compliment to corporate office WHILE dining)

That last bit was for ZiK, as he insists so intently that I'm racist.

If you're going off what I've said to you in this thread and you've come to the conclusion I'm calling you a racist well then your reading comprehension is more impaired than I thought. Other posters managed to get the gist of what I was saying about tipping and the related topics in the past posts on the last few pgs. If you want to make this about race then you got a serious problem.

Now if in some other race thread you revealed yourself to be a racist that's on you. Not my fault if you've professed racist views and I called you out on it. If the shoe fits.

I'd say it's in between. It's not fine dining, but it's nicer than, let's say, Claim Jumper, or Macaroni Grill, or Olive Garden (which would be a bit lower than the other two). Most chain restaurant have a per person average of about 15- 20. Our per person average is more like 25-30.
