Houston Rockets Thread - Preseason vs Spurs (Friday)

Crappy finish to the 1st half after that good start. Bev has 3 fouls already, Terry's not doing much, and yet, Canaan is still seeing no playing time. This feels just like the playoff series vs Portland, except it feels like no way up. Lopez is looking like Alonzo Mourning out there. Just sloppy play all around. We're lucky to only be down 13, and it can easily be 25.

a system and good shot selection is all that's needed, smh. trade in some of that volume for some real plays tailored to our guys strengths. we got the roster. if our 1s could step on guys throats, I believe our 2nd/3rd level units can hold it down.

my man JET tho!

Terry heard me slandering him and he's been hitting 3s and playing D for the last couple possessions

Tough loss. We really need a upgrade at the point.. Bev just isin't cutting it, I always liked him as more of a bench player anyways. Hopefully Dwight can come back strong in time for the playoffs I still think we can contend given we get the right match ups in the playoffs.

what playoff team in the west do we match up well with enough to be able to say we can confidently "contend" and beat in a 7 game series?

With confidence? Dallas, Phoenix, Clippers.

50/50. San antonio, Memphis, Portland.

Don't think we can beat Golden State and If OKC sneaks in, I don't like the idea of playing them either. This is all assuming Dwight is good to go for the playoffs otherwise its a different story.

Phoenix isn't is hardly a true playoff team and there's basically little chance we play them. They won't get as high as a 4/5 seed. and I'm even doubting even 6th seed which we'd need to be 3 seed to happen. can happen, just doesnt seem likely

Dallas might be entertainable, but: Carlisle >....he can grind a talented team out in a playoff series

every other team is somewhat laughable to say we can win a playoff series against them, imo. We'd just have to bank on guys playing their best basketball ALL SEASON during the playoffs.

If we're healthy we can be Dallas Carslisle be damned they have done horribly against play off teams this year they have a weak bench and a point guard who shoots .33% Fts and only 3 good defensive players.

the same Carlisle that almost beat the Spurs in the playoffs last year?

regular season and playoffs are completely different animals. Beard's half court game has improved, but if he isn't getting the foul calls he gets all year, we're gonna be in trouble. and in the playoffs, that's exactly what happened last year. and if Dwight comes back and he does get fouls, he's not going to make them so?

Dwights Impact goes far beyond the offensive end. Guys who run the lane will consistently change their shots even when he doesn't contest the simply because his presence is there. By no means is this team a lock to win a title but, people doubted the 95 team that was a 6th seed and beat 3 60 win teams to win the finals. With that said, if Morey can possibly swing a deal for a PG and we hit our stride going into the playoffs I belive we can contend

It does, but if we can't defend in transition and we are constantly chucking the long ball and not executing in half court on offense, his defensive impact gets minimized. In order to truly take advantage of it, we need to have complimentary offensive system with execution. People don't realize how much offense and defense go hand in hand. Sort of like football in a different way.

My main focus was what are we going to do offensively when teams take away our primary "set" or lack thereof? like Portland did last year. Would we have won that series if we simply dumped it down to dwight more? I remember hearing people ***** about that last year. Basically saying more Dwight touches would have meant more wins. I'm not all that sold on that idea, particularly this year.

and the Rockets in the mid 90s had Hakeem. You're going to be a contender REGARDLESS of what's going on with the Dream on the court imo. Nobody on our team is on Hakeem's all around level as a player. Harden this year is trying to be that guy but certainly isn't there yet. Dwight isnt even close.

but again, I'm not saying we can't go into the playoffs playing our best ball and win. We can competed with any single team on one given night imo. But we're talking about the playoffs. I'm not really down for wishing on a star that everything falls into place. Without the Heatles out there, we need to be actually attacking and scheming rather than wishing that Josh Smith can knock down 4 3pointers a game in the playoffs.

we are pretenders. Harden is the man, but we pretenders.
I agree. but we are playing without our defensive anchor.

But we need another guy who can create a shot for himself/other players...

Beverley tho

idk man. yall are putting so much emphasis on him being an anchor when we constantly blow leads. with him on or off the court. Yes he's A1 at being a rim protector, but when we don't guard transition, or have good defined rotations, none of that matters.

I hate it when people bring up the Spurs Dallas series as if it was any achievement that they were a Vince Carter shot away from being bounced in 5 the eye test also showed that the Spurs didn't play they're best basketball then Pop said his players were rusty from the rest that they were given when they clinched the 1st seed take it from him that series wasn't any thing special.

if you watched the series, you'll notice the gameplan from Carlisle was on point. if you've watched Carlisle's career, you'll notice his gameplan is always on point. Just has lesser elite talent now that Dirk is declining. and if you think giving the team that won the 'ship in any year a 7 game series...let alone a historic franchise...coached by a top 3 coach in history....is an achievement, I can understand the bias and wishing on a star for the Rockets.

I give Carslisle credit for being a great coach over the years the reason why I personally think the series was close was Splitter guarding Dirk and the Spurs couldn't go small and play Diaw more but I just do not think they are better than us having Josh Smith gives me hope that we can adequately guard elite PFs.

Yep, only coaches of that caliber find series defining wrinkles like that. I think I mentioned on here: Last time we played the Mavs, DMO had to log heavier minutes early b/c TJones got early fouls. Mavs had Dirk on DMO defensively, and we wouldnt go to DMO in the post. Like we didn't try once. Multiple possessions later, Dirk goes out and Tyson Chandler is on DMO, and we immediately go at Chandler back to basket. In what world does that make sense?

and Lamarcus Aldridge may have been the sole force that made everybody scream that we need to get somebody that can guard an elite PF. We just got washed by Portland. LA wasn't killing like he was in the playoffs, but he gave us adequate work. We'll see what that looks like when Dwight gets back. Yes Josh will be a great defensive cog. as we've seen flashes of it. It'll remain to be seen whether we put guys in the position to be successful defensively. s/o to Josh though.

His offense has been normalized recently to be consistent in this skittish system. and his defense and passing have been :smokin :smokin

TJones out tonight with flu-like symptoms siiiiiiigh. Really need to rebound this game heading into the break. We had that Blazers game in hand after being down 18, and missed a huge opportunity. I'd like to assume K-Pap gets some minutes tonight, but there's no telling. Doesn't matter about this being in Phoenix or not, have to get a win regardless.
