Houston Rockets Thread - Preseason vs Spurs (Friday)

We have to stop starting Dorsey. I know he isn't playing major minutes, but any time Bev, Ariza, and Dorsey are on the court together, I feel like we struggle.

T Jones started the next game after I posted this. Safe to say McHale lurks NT.

8-0 with him as a starter when the playoffs come we'll have a deep bench especially the bigs with Smoove and Either DMO.

dwight's got a little bit over a month to get healthy and game ready...gonna need him if we wanna make any serious moves

To say McHale is a good coach is a huge stretch. Good teams win with bad coaches all the time, see OKC and the Rangers in baseball.

The D is vastly improved, but after last year, it had to go up lol

Maybe McHale is great with all the personalities on the team, but in my in my opinion from what I've heard and seen myself, he gives us no real X and O advantage. If that isn't the case, someone please correct me.

^ literally couldn't have said it any better. Great with personalities, terrible with Xs and Os.

even against the Cavs. not sure if yall noticed, but our offense kept stalling on the plays late where they put Bron on Harden. Bev hit that random 3, but that's not playoff basketball execution. Bev won't get that shot against good defensive teams.

Once your bread and butter breaks down (PnR), you have to at least look to some sort derivation of actual sets.

and that defensive increase is credit to JB Bickerstaff and not McHale, ha. Maybe credit to McHale for hiring Bickerstaff?

on another note, Hawks/Grizz on a back to back this week.

:x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

bout to be skressful bruh

Just go back and watch the Clippers game to see how Mchale is as an X's and O's coach. Just watch how the clips execute...pick and rolls...out of bounds sets...secondary breaks... as opposed to what the Rockets did down the floor. Everything the clips do Is designed to put their players in the best position to use their talents. Running Redick off screens...CP in High or low pick and Roll with Deandre/Blake...and they execute the hell out of those sets. Then if/when the play doesn't work or break down; they throw it to Crawford or Paul to create late in the shot clock.

Outside of having a guy like Redick that sounds just like most of the same things the Rockets do. Doc must be a terrible coach.

(even though I think Doc Rivers is one of the most overrated things going)

Harden suspended one game.. no surprise there

At least he's getting some much needed rest

nah man, a PickNRoll isn't a play. it's a high level set. you got tons of subsets of pick n roll. (for the purists, ha, excuse me if the play/set/etc. terminology is slightly off.) Everybody runs some version of pick N roll though. Go to 2k and look up the playbook fam.

i want to type more about it, but it becomes pointless debate if guys don't know how to recognize the difference between intricate play calling with options on options vs. what we do.

Actually Doc is one of the better coaches in the league. Lest we forget Vinny Del Negro had essentially this same group of players...led them to a franchise best regular season only to get sent home in the first round after winning the first two games of the series. The clips were a much better team with Doc last year.

All NBA teams run a lot of the same stuff. How its run and how those plays exploit match ups...dictate the defense...put players in position to use their strengths... is what sets apart the average coach from the good/great coach. The rockets O too often winds up with James holding the ball at the right elbow behind the 3 pt. line to either hit a step back or go barreling down the lane. You almost never see a side pick and roll, or basket cuts to get James or the other guys easy shots at the rim...back picks for the big guys...DMo and Dwight/Josh could be devastating in the paint if Houston ever ran high/low with the big men...but hey who am I.

Playoff time will tell if Mchale can get this team to the next level. They have more than enough talent to get out of the first round.

We run a read & react offense, not hard to digest at all. As i've said before im not engaging in any McHale debates, we're winning so i have no problems.

I can't help if some of you guys continue to focus on the shortcomings of the coach. We very well could lose in the 1st round and it could be for a hell of a lot of reasons besides the coach.

sure you can say we run read/react, but its dumbed down. guys literally standing in one spot on the floor when our minimal set of options break down. We don't really counter in our approach, we just keep iso'ing. Harden's increased passing (and isolation scoring) is helping the whole scenario though. Quite frankly that's the primary reason we're the 3 seed now, imo.

Harden suspended one game.. no surprise there

That's the first thing i thought of  With the way this team is coached, the only way our players will get rest is through suspensions, being in the doghouse, being rookies, or being injured.

good thing we acquired Brewer, because Ariza been playing heavy minutes before Brew arrived and it showed with his atrocious 3 pt shooting (except for the first month)…

Hopefully Atlanta falls into the trap and lose the game tomorrow

Im assuming we'll have Brewer start at the 2? Or would Jason Terry be better?

I'm actually excited for the game tonight. Let's see what DMO and TJ can do as main options.

LMAOOOOO

Corey Brewer with DA START tonight. Curious as to how the rest of the rotations are. Pablo will probably play about the same amount as last game. Wonder if Daniels and Nick Johnson get time too. Stealing a win would be nice tonight.

Very good sight to see with the flow of the ball, but we have to keep it going. Can't let another lead slip by leaving guys open
