Houston Rockets Thread - Preseason vs Spurs (Friday)

It's really easy to blame McHale for everything. I know, I've been there. Personally I think our biggest issue is that we're a three point shooting team without good three-point shooters or a secondary creator.

I'm the opposite, when I first moved here I didn't blame Mchale at all; the more and more I watch them I've come to realize he's the biggest problem

damn, I still wish Canaan could've gotten some minutes. He was playing really good for us in the beginning

anyways, who's ready for the rockets/mavs game?

Hate the mavs, hopefully we dismantle them in their own court

Agreed about Canaan getting more minutes, and also have the same sentiments about the whole Canaan not playing defense thing. How exactly would McHale know, unless it's in practice? Cause I damn sure couldn't tell during the games since he hardly played, and when he did, it was during blowouts (whether losing or not) where he's just chucking the ball just cause he never gets to shoot.

Def ready for this game tonight. The Mavs got smacked around, so I'm hoping teh Rockets jump on them, instead of letting the Mavs get motivated and fight.

Also, going to the Raptors game tomorrow :smokin gf got me tickets for Valentine's Day, and I'll be at the Cavs game next week with my mom and sis. Will be the first Rockets games I've been to since the Heat beat us at home 125-119. Courtney Lee and Kevin Martin were on that roster

After that initial 8 - 0 run, the Rockets look like a team that literally did nothing but eat booty over the break. Ariza BRICKS, Terry BRICKS, turnovers by everybody. Very sickening to watch so far. Better turn it around, and in a hurry, cause that team in the first half is winning nothing come playoffs.

can't dig ourselves in that deep a hole and expect to win. biggest problem tonight was lazy turnovers leading to offense for the mavs. a little rust. we gotta hit a couple more of those open 3s. we generate so many clean looks to not be hitting more.

Now that Morey didn't trade the pick who should we draft?

Any 6'9 tweener PFs available at picks12-14?

Look at that balanced scoring from the Mavs....Aminum, Villanueava, and 2015 Devin Harris should NOT be factors, let we just let them play like they were a big 3. Need to rebound tonight. I'm no trying to have nice seats at tonight's game just to see a loss.

i want Willie Cauley Stein should he fall far enough, but we'll probably be a couple of picks too late. I also want Rondae Hollis Jefferson who I think will fall, but we won't get him.

If this doesn't scream coaching, I don't know what does. It's easy because it's obvious and it comes off as an easy out because it's been an issue for 2 (going on 3) years now. He's gotten marginally better in some areas over time, but we can't be afforded such time going forward when we're trying to contend now

i think that's more morey than anything. morey dictates our style. mchale is just the guy who sits on the bench and helps develop players. the players like him, but let's not act like this is his system. the order to shoot 3s and layups is coming from the top

that's cool, but shooting a lot of 3s and executing an offense aren't mutually exclusive concepts. I refuse to believe a GM is controlling our Xs and Os. Is Morey also saying DO NOT play transition defense or encouraging us to not implement a defensive scheme?

at every level of basketball, the coach has to dictate Xs and Os. We have none. We can't let McHale off that easy. He's been bad since Minnesota. Not his first rodeo

furthermore, you don't go obtain DH12 for 22 mil and max out Harden to say your team identity is going to be one that only shoots the 3 ball. we were also trying to acquire rondo.

and like you said it we don't just have lethal 3 point shooting. our best 3 point shooters are normally role players, besides Beard, but he drives and distributes a lot. No GM is going to go obtain a core unit that isn't lethal at shooting 3s and just tell the coach to make sure they chuck up a lot of 3s. We have the talent to pretty much run any type of offense we want.

Morey might dictate the style he wants us to play, but there are way too many in game issues that fall in McHale.

He's not a good coach.

it's too simplistic to say we don't run an offense. it's not as precise as the spurs or hawks, but we do run a system which does consist of spacing (guys in the corners). we generate lots of open 3s. if we just hit those 3s, which we are very capable of doing, then it's fine.

and you're just complaining to complain if you're upset at our defense. we're a top 3rd team in defense and we've missed dwight for a very long time now. when he is in the lineup, we are an elite defense.

 spurs, hawks, mavs, heat, warriors, i really could go on.

"we do run a system which does consist of spacing (guys in the corners)"

talking about simplistic, that is the definition of simple. We need a system that has plays designed for each players strengths. You just said we don't have great 3 point shooters or a 2nd play maker which I'm assuming would attack iso via spacing.

Those teams mentioned above maximize their talent because their play calling within their system actually gets them shots that they want to take. We don't have the splash brothers on our squad… and their Superstars keep their systems fluid and make plays within that system or go into god mode when needed. Harden has the skill set to succeed in any system. What we do is spread out and chuck. THAT is simplistic.

as for our defense, I mentioned in here plenty of times that JB Bickerstaff has been credited/documented with implementing some good defensive tendencies. that consists of picking up guards early in the half court and pushing them out to the sidelines. they do it all the time, so its obvious. i don't care about defensive ranking. "3rd in defense" is vague as hell. I'm talking about how what I'm watching on the TV. We weren't bad defensively as far as stats go last year and we gave up multiple 4th quarter leads in the playoffs. Looking like a college team. Also, regardless of what our ranking/rating is as a defense, we are TRASH defensively in transition. I don't need a stat to support any of that. stats can be tailored and used subjectively.

@clutchfans: McHale on if new guys might play: "Tonight?! I'd be shocked... We haven't practiced yet. I met them 5 minutes ago. Seemed like nice guys."

There's no point in arguing with you if you're going "to say to hell with the stats I'm using my eye test". It's clear how subjective that becomes. Our "transition defense" is bad because of how many live ball turnovers we have. Being third in defensive efficiency isn't a vague stat either, but you got it.
