A lot of people always pit analytics vs the eye test which is crazy to me.

Analytics in most cases go WITH the eye test

I think that's separate discussion, which is more in line with advanced stats

What Chuck was referring to yesterday was how teams are putting their rosters together, which is why he also referenced Billy Bean and the MLB

What I don't understand, is that folks are acting like the Rockets or any of these other NBA teams are only using analytics as the sole basis for constructing their teams. Chuck was talking so basic and reckless last night

The thing about analytics and basketball is it isn't really useful IMO. Who in this thread doesn't believe they could put together a good NBA team without it? Srs

Basketball unlike the other major sports because of its small rosters doesn't need a analytics breakdown to know what fits. Now if your talking baseball with 26 men per team, 9 players on the field, matching pitchers vs certain hitters ect, I can see its use. In the NBA either you have X player/s in 99% of cases or you don't. it simply comes down to that alone.

Analytics can't measure a players heart and dedication, his influence on and off the court on his fellow teammates, or his likability and respectability amongst his or her peers (coaches, refs, teammates, opponents)

I agree that the numbers are real, but I think it's just a pointless figure unless your gambling or something. I most certainly would not build my team solely around analytics

Agree with you on the MLB part, nobody should compare the NBA with the MLB. They have to use analytics in MLB because of the vast talent pool and roster spaces and just for the fact that it's a ******* different game than basketball

Disagree with you though that it's not useful in basketball. In terms of situational moments and player tendencies I don't see how they aren't useful. I don't believe front offices only use analytics to build their rosters as much as MLB teams do but I do think analytics deserves a place in the game

Why is this becoming a black and white thing? Thats why Charles Barkley is wrong. Hes attempting to completely dismiss analytics. It should be used in conjunction with "Traditional Basketball knowledge" not in place of it.

One hand washes the other here.

As for the Analytics. I think they are overblown in the NBA.

In baseball they work because there is a much bigger sample size, more variables (day/night, indoor/outdoor, Lefty/Righty, ect)

I see your point but before the analytics craze there were scouting reports that gave you that info.

Right, it should be supplementary at best. The issue is when people value things like per or defensive rating over wins and losses. That derrick rose game vs the warriors is a good example. There is probably no metric that says he had a good game but Imo he did

RIP Jerry Tarkanian.

His UNLV team with LJ, Augmon, Anthony, etc. was one of the most memorable college basketball teams of all time. Right up there with the Michigan Fab 5 and the Laettner, Hurley, Hill Duke team that beat UNLV.

Charles Barkley isn't wrong

He just didn't say his point in the best way because he was irritated at Daryl Morey

Charles Barkley is far from an idiot, there's just misunderstandings when you talk unfiltered and off the cuff.

That is the appeal of the show, it's not rehearsed or calculated trolls like most other Sports shows.
