Gary Payton on Dwight Howard: ‘I think he’s disliked by a lot of players’

Kobe Bryant had some unpleasant words for Dwight Howard on the court when the Lakers faced the Rockets earlier this season, and the animosity we saw was completely understandable.

Howard left the Lakers in free agency after famously clashing with Bryant from a personality standpoint — Bryant is the game’s fiercest competitor, while Howard … well, not quite as much.

It was no surprise, then, to see Bryant engage in some not-safe-for-work name-calling. But when one of the league’s nice guys in Kevin Durant was spotted doing the exact same thing recently, it was worth wondering just how many of the league’s stars share this negative opinion.

According to Gary Payton, it’s a very long list.

From Fox Sports Live (via Triangle Offense):

“I think he’s disliked by a lot of players,” Payton said. “What Dwight does is, you know you see all the smiles and all the antics, that is getting on player’s nerves. To get this guy, Kevin Durant, to do what he did, you know it’s starting to become a problem with players, because Kevin Durant doesn’t really talk to anybody … [Durant] goes at people that are fake with stuff. Only fake guys. Fake guys to me are when they’re always woofing, woofing, woofing, and they don’t really do nothing.”

LaMarcus Aldridge is at least one other player who has been seen using a certain p-word where Howard was concerned.

This is part of the reason the Lakers made the right decision by essentially choosing Bryant over Howard in free agency, despite the fact that it left the franchise in such a dismal state of affairs. Howard isn’t a face-of-the-franchise type of player; while he’s undoubtedly an All-Star talent, he doesn’t have the mindset to be the one leading a team by himself. And it appears as though several of his peers around the league realize that.

I'm not sure on Crawford for TA, even though I would possibly welcome it. :nerd: The only reason is due to the Grizz being successful without TA and I think Conley, Lee, Prince, Pondexter, along with Marc anchoring will continue to make the Grizz a top 2-3 team defensively. The only issue for me is that TA tends to step his game up come playoff time and he would be needed against the likes of a Durant, Harden, etc.

Unfortunately -- for Clipper fans anyway -- the same thing cannot be said about Crawford. He's had a few good playoff games, but his production dips for the most part in the post-season. Much more difficult for his iso stuff to work when he's got an elite defender on him all the time, as usually happens in the playoffs.

That's the clips weakness too

Cp and Blake can and will win plenty of games during the regular season. But unless CP grows 4 inches or Blake develops a legitimate ISO game. It's second round and out for the clips at best.

Dwight gotta be the most disliked player in the L. Jimmy butler is that piece a lot of teams are missing. U put him on a legit contender and its a championship run.

Not sure I completely agree (Not the decision of Kobe over Dwight part)

But that's an interesting take.

that missed reverse cost Lee so much damn money..... & helped break up that orlando squad that was thier finals to take & they blew it

QFT. They could have easily been up in that series.

Courtney Lee was a good 3 & D guy out the gate.

that's how you know its real, when the nice guys go at your neck. I'll reserve judgement til Grant comes out of the blazer at dude.

It's the cool thing amongst NBA circles to try and clown Dwight on the court and call him soft etc etc now after the whole lakers fiasco.

Especially since these players know that there is absolutely no way to test it.

Dwight's been the same clown since he came into the league..and now that he's fell out of grace he's all the sudden "soft" now cuz Kobe says so? Lmao

You think its easy being able to buy whatever you want?

I'm saying, these are "yes mam, no mam" type dudes who invited their parents to their games going at dudes neck.

Kobe isn't surprising, he probably calls his daughter's ******* when they fall and scrape themselves.

Hate to say it, but its true. I thought this would be year that Blake would step up and show he can be a 4th quarter scorer, but its not happening so far.
