I think he and the Thunder panicked in December when they were 5-12. They didn't want to dig a deeper hole than they were already in.

Definitely. At that point, Sacramento was looking solid as well. They brought him back for a run against a bunch of bad teams, but maybe if the Thunder had known the West wasn't quite what is cracked up to be they would have held him out longer.
