"If you expect nothing from anybody, you're never disappointed." - Sylvia Plath

After coming off a miserable 29-53 season, with no All Stars and no scheduled national television appearances, the historically inept Washington Wizards did the unthinkable:  they overachieved.

How will they fare now, in a reshuffled Eastern Conference where they can take no one by surprise?

Like any good magic trick, the Wizards' sudden success was accomplished through misdirection.

Few outside the District paid much attention to the team's 2-7 start.  Why would they, when the Knicks started out 3-13?

Why would the average NBA fan care about Washington's Gortat gamble when Houston signed Dwight Howard - and with Andrew Bynum carving a path of destruction through the Eastern Conference?

Why care about a hobbled Nene, or Randy Wittman running Bradley Beal into the ground, when Derrick Rose and Kobe Bryant again suffered catastrophic injuries?

Why care if Otto Porter was missing in action when #1 pick Anthony Bennett was putting up numbers that would make Kwame Brown blush?

Why care that the Wizards finally broke .500 for the first time since 2009 when the Phoenix Suns were shocking everyone in the superior Western Conference?

If you weren't watching regional sports networks, or League Pass, your first glimpse of the 2013-2014 Washington Wizards didn't arrive until April 20th, when they waylaid a shorthanded Bulls squad.

To the average fan, the Wizards' breakthrough success appeared from nowhere.  We know better.  We spent the last five years suffocating in the false bottom of a trick hat, aching for release.  For the Wizards' faithful few, there was nothing magical in the victory over the battered Bulls - and nothing tragic in the loss to the struggling Pacers.

The basketball world sees the Wizards in a different light these days - a spotlight.  A brief glance at the schedule reveals a whopping ten national television appearances - including a Christmas Day game against the Knicks.  A dogged recruiting effort by then-assistant Sam Cassell secured the signing of a veteran All Star at the mid-level exception.  (Though a staple transaction for contenders, Sam captured a unicorn by Wizards standards.)

The "culture change" is nearly complete.  Virtually all of the the team's knuckleheads and underachievers have been jettisoned.  After four abysmal seasons, Jan Vesely is headed back to Europe a millionaire.  Jordan Crawford will be chucking in China this year - as will Andray Blatche.  Chris Singleton latched on with the idling Pacers.  Eric Maynor was waived by the quasi-professional 76'ers.

In their place, Ernie Grunfeld has attempted to fortify one of the league's worst benches by adding rugged forward DaJuan Blair and former Kardashian Kris Humphries to last year's mid-season replacements:  pensioners Andre Miller and Drew Gooden.

A new five year, sixty million dollar pact will keep Marcin in the middle for the foreseeable future.  The aforementioned midsummer miracle effectively swaps former Finals MVP Paul Pierce with former Finals participant Trevor Ariza.  A strong summer league showing for sophomores Glen Rice, Jr. and Otto Porter, Jr. gave fans hope for the underutilized prizes of the 2013 draft.

The bar has been raised to a dizzying height:  above average.

Since 1980, the Washington Bullets/Wizards have never won more than 45 games.  They've never won their division.  (In fact, since the formation of the Southeast Division in 2004, the title has never left the state of Florida.)   This year, with Miami's seeming abdication and the entire conference in a state of upheaval, the Wizards find themselves tasked with achieving both.

The stage has been set for another NBA season.  This time, all our cards are on the table.

Suddenly, the only thing the Wizards wanted has become the one thing they can't afford:  to betray expectations.

My body is ready. I'm trying to go to 4-5 games this year. I haven't been excited for a season in years.

I have high hopes for this team this season

Did you guys catch the Pierce and Noah exchange last night?

I loved what PIerce did to Noah last night,.

sooo excited for this season!!

Lots of expectations this season. Let's not be Skins fans and start talking crazy.

I definitely think we can win 50 games and make the ECF this year. We should be able to take the division, but with strengthened Bulls and Cavs teams, getting to the ECF will be difficult, but not impossible.

We need Johnny to improve his jumper and offensive decision making, while the collective team needs to improve its halfcourt Defense. With a deeper bench, I wholeheartedly expect more Wins and more consistency.

I'm hype AF!!! Hope we can legit have a NT Meetup/summit around a game this season. I plan on attending close to 10 games this season (hopefully more), hope to see some of yaw at the Phone Booth.

:pimp: :pimp:
I haven't been as excited for a preseason game ever in my life until last night. Can't wait to put these season tix to use November 1

What the best case scenario for him this season?

35 games 20 of those games him actually being useful

But as a fan I've written him off for the year and if we get anything from him it's a bonus.

Whitman needs to get these guys going early so we can start playing with lineup combinations (especially on the wing) early in the season.

Praying for good health

Expecting Otto to be a solid contributor and hopefully by playoff time he can round in to shape defensively

People are gassing us up too much it scares me

Hope nene abuses Kevin love soft serve self all year

WIIIIIZZZZAAAAAARRDDDDSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!¡!

It would be great if both Rice Jr and Porter contribute this year

I doubt both will so I'm hoping at least one of them does something

THIS!!

Please lets get these two some minutes this year.

I worry about Andre Miller as a back up too.  He is solid and was a big help in the playoffs last year but if wall got forbid gets hurt for a few games idk if Dre will be able to handle it himself.

Saraphin lookin slimmer though

I love the toughness and leadership Pierce brings to this team.  He set the tone.

Unfortunately, it'll cost us.  Nene and Blair were both suspended for the opener against Miami:  http://www.nba.com/2014/news/10/08/wizards-bulls-suspensions-and-fines/index.html?ls=iref:nbahpts
The divison is ours
We say that, but it seems many of the talking heads disagree.  Miami still has some name value in this league, and is considered the favorite until proven otherwise in a court of... basketball.

I expect Charlotte to put up a fight, too, though I wonder how Atlanta will respond given the dark cloud hanging over them in the front office.

It won't be easy, but it's arguably the only legitimate division title chance this franchise has seen in my lifetime.

I knew that Martell deal 2 summers ago wouldn't turn out well.
He's talking about retirement, too. But once his current deal expires.
Like Steve Nash... take the money and limp.

Perhaps the silver lining to some of these dubious deals is the reprieve offered by the NBA's new TV deal.  Under the projected cap, Gortat's deal suddenly looks a lot better.  Even Nene's contract no longer kills the team's chances - however imaginary - of landing KD.  Everyone, even the Nets, will be under the cap in two years.  Scary thought.
