Ethically how can we continue to watch football?

I don't even find football entertaining anyhow. I'm with OP, on this one.

I find football entertaining and i wanna try to leech myself off of the sport.
Someone said to me recently while watching a game "you're watching these players slowly kill themselves"

It made me feel guilty about even watching the sport.
We need to think about how we contribute - as consumers of NFL products/watchers of the sport- to the epidemic of brain trauma in NFL players.

Repped & quoted for truth.

OP and others, what would you guys like to see the league do? I hear this argument and think to myself, what can honestly be done. It is the nature of the sport.
The NFL and owners make so much $$$ off of these players.

They should be pouring in $ to technology that makes the game safe for NFL players, college players, high school players and pop warner players.

The NFL should take initiative and make sure that the helmet technology/pad technology AND coaching practices are conducive to completely minimize health risk.

also the NFL should be adamant to provide all health care costs for their former players and current players. (the amount of people who have played in the NFL is tiny in the grand scheme of things)

they have sooo much $ and they have the resources to make this happen.

but they're selfish bastards who run the NFL - Roger Goodell and the owners need to take some damn initiative.

Also they need to provide further financial and mental health counseling for their players to prevent players going broke or beating their wives/children etc.

The league needs to treat their players like they care about them... and the way to do that is not just financial compensation, it's also healthcare and other job benefits.

ALSO - Fans need to get involved. All we do is judge the players - we call them greedy and we say "they know the risks, they get paid fairly for the injuries they sustain". And fans only care about wins and losses... it's insensitive, it's absurd. If we love the sport, we should love the players too.

we show no consideration for the possibility that these players could be ruining their quality of life in 20 years, we only care about wins and losses.

It's really shameful when you think about it

It's understandable to be frustrated about wins and losses in a football game, that's fine. But we also should support the players that make the game so entertaining to us.

they need to put an end to helmet to helmet hits. RBs need to stop dropping their heads. Guys gotta be tackling safer. They need to change the way the game is played.

NBA > NFL in 5 years in regard to net worth.

You got me ^ I was a little high, but seriously though, I see long term effects with this concussion ****, my future son aint playing that's for damn sure, and while the alphas on NT might not agree with me, youth football is down nationally, and is only going to drop more. More like 20 years.

if the NBA drops the number of games they play/year it would help the sport tremendously.

baseball/basketball have the downside that there's a saturation of the sport

football has weekly games for a short season and that draws way more attention and media frenzy to each game.

It ain't down in the communities that's supplying the majority of NFL players

And I doubt it's down in the south overall either

Yep, the communities actually focused on and concerned with these issues aren't the ones supplying the talent. Upper-middle class families pulling their kids out of the sport really doesn't do much.
