If it were up to the Saudi royal family, they'd probably have gone secular a long time ago. The thing is, Saudi Arabia exists today because of an ancient pact between the house of Saud and the founder of the Wahhabi brand of Islam. In exchange for adopting that interpretation of Islam, the Saudi were given the OK to conquer all the peoples that now make up Saudi Arabia, and some of the descendants of the founder of the kingdom are related to the religious establishment of the country.

There's a documentary on Youtube that follows bin Talal around (here, but in French). In the Saudi headquarters of his company, women get responsibilities beyond fetching water and they come to work dressed not unlike profesional women in the West. At the same time, they promote Wahhabism in their schools and social life.
